This CANADAfirst document is an information guide on Canadian University swim programs to assist
Canadian high school and CEGEP swimmers with their post secondary educational plans.
The document is prepared by Swimming Canada using information and contributions submitted by the
University swimming programs and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS).
Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) includes thirty-two schools across Canada offering Varsity swimming
programs. CIS is divided into four conferences: Canada West, Ontario University Athletics, Réseau du
sport étudiant du Québec and Atlantic University Sport. There are two bilingual universities, four French
universities and twenty-six English universities. One Canadian university competes outside of CIS in the
Great Northwest Athletic Conference of NCAA Division II.
HINTS FOR SELECTING A UNIVERSITY
PLAN AHEAD: Begin the process early in Grade 11.
RESEARCH: Rank your schools by academic reputation. Pay special attention to the faculties and programs offered.
Ensure that these are in line with your goals for your education. There are many sources of information online to
assist you to collect information. Canadian Universities are surveyed and ranked annually in MacLean’s Magazine
and the Globe and Mail produces the Canadian University Report once per year, filled with helpful information.
Your school’s advisors or teachers can give you ideas and information.
RANK your schools by swimming prowess and how that matches your goals for your swimming career. Go online
and research school’s team depth and history. Talk to coaches, swimmers and alumni.
ADMISSIONS CUT OFF STANDARDS and DEADLINES: For Canadian schools, confirm the historic academic cut off
standards. If you have GPA around that level, you will likely be accepted towards the end of the admissions
period. Recently some universities have admitted athletes in early February (instead of the usual April/May) but to
do so they use Grade 11 marks - so be prepared!
MONEY: Realize that there are many funding avenues in Canada – i.e. bursaries, private scholarships, provinces
and clubs. Those funds can be quite substantial and well worth searching for.
VISITATION: To get a true picture of the school and swimming program, a visit to the campus and swimming facility
is required. See the Athlete Recruiting section in the CIS Athlete’s Guide for further information.
ENJOY THE PROCESS: The transition from secondary school to post-secondary school should be an exciting time in
your life. It is a new opportunity to step in the direction of your dreams. Understand that the decisions you make
now are important and can be life changing, but they can also be modified if you find you have taken a wrong path.

Canadian Universities have scholarships – see the CIS Athlete’s Guide for details
Provincial Sections offer significant funding to university swimmers- see next pages for details.
Carded swimmers attending university in Canada have the option of deferring tuition funding and using
available deferred tuition credits once they have retired from sport or are no longer carded.
Every Olympic swimming medalist for Canada, in an individual event, for the past 34 years has been
training in Canada and not the USA; Ryan Cochrane, Curtis Myden, Marianne Limpert, Mark Tewksbury,
Alex Baumann and others.
In a Canadian university the student-athlete is permitted five years of athletic eligibility as opposed to
four years in the USA.
In Canadian universities there are flexible school regulations for attending major international
competitions that occur during the school as well as academic accommodations for National Team
members.
Tuition in Canada is highly subsidized by federal and provincial governments so the tuition is therefore
much less expensive in Canada
Tuition in Canada is tax deductible

What happens to a scholarship/funding if I am hurt?
What is the coach’s historical attitude towards full time academic load?
Will you have the freedom to pick your own course load and timetable?
How many swimmers have transferred out of the program?
If your class schedule does not permit you to make all of the workouts, how will the coach respond?
How big is the city, compared to the one you live in now?
Will you be unable to spend holidays at home? i.e. does the program run a camp over Christmas break?

POINTS FOR CONSIDERATION ON NCAA PROGRAMS AND CANADIAN NATIONAL LEVEL SWIMMERS:
If considering post-secondary opportunities outside of Canada it is important to keep in mind the fact that not all
NCAA swimming teams are the same. The level of talent, coaching expertise and program integrity can vary
dramatically from one university to the next. However, even the most accomplished of the NCAA programs are
restrained by the following impediments to successful preparation for international competition.
25 Yard Focus
NCAA competition is conducted in a 25 yard course. The type of training which is done to prepare for peak
performance in 25 yard competition is very different from the type of training that is necessary to prepare for peak
performance in a 50 meter pool. The difference is dramatic!
Sprint Emphasis
With the addition of the 4 x 50 relays (freestyle and medley) to the NCAA program several years ago, the large
majority of points in the NCAA championship meets are awarded for sprint events. As a result, most of the NCAA
programs are sprint oriented and the aerobic component of training that is critical for success in long course
competition (even for sprinters) has become inadequate at best. While some of the most competent coaches in
our sport are coaching in the NCAA program, they are all paid to put the highest priority on the NCAA
Championships.
Conflicting Trials
The NCAA Championships always occur in mid to late March. The Canadian Trials for the highest priority
international competition of the year are often scheduled at the same time. With the possible exception of the
Olympic Trials, NCAA swimmers will not be excused from the NCAA championships to participate in their
respective National trials.
Training Restrictions
Be aware that the NCAA rules impose post-season training restrictions that could prevent the swimmers from
committing as much time to their preparation as their international competitors do. These restrictions are the
most severe after the NCAA championships (mid March), which is precisely the time of the year that a heavy
workload is essential to successful preparation for major international competition.
Multiple Responsibilities
Coach’s recruiting responsibilities are extremely demanding and may detract from the time and energy available
for coaching outside of the NCAA season.
Annual vs. Quadrennial Planning
The NCAA program demands peak performance every March, so the NCAA coaches can’t afford to look beyond the
next championship meet in their program planning. The most successful performances in the Olympic Games are
the result of a long term (4 year) approach to program planning.
Swimming Canada Athlete Assistance Program (AAP) Funding
NCAA rules prohibit the acceptance of AAP funding prior to or during participation in the NCAA program.
Acceptance of any AAP funding will render the swimmer ineligible for NCAA competition. Acceptance of prize
money from meets prior to, or during an NCAA career is prohibitive and can result in not getting a scholarship or
losing an existing one.
NCAA swimming does have much to offer…a free education (if a full scholarship is offered), an exciting peer group
environment and attractive facilities (in many cases). You may know some Canadian swimmers who have returned
from recruiting trips and talked about what a great experience it was and how much fun it would be to train in that
environment. While all of this is true, it doesn’t change the fact that swimmers training in the NCAA program can
be very disadvantaged in their preparation for international swimming. The NCAA opportunity and experience can
come at a great cost to a swimmer’s progress and performance.
If the goal of achieving personal excellence at the highest level in the sport of swimming is a high priority, Canadian
swimmers would be well advised to continue training in their home environment if it is working for them.
Consider the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) programs that surround athletes with all the support required to
become world class both academically and athletically or apply for admission to one of Canada’s High Performance
Training Centres (Vancouver and Montreal) and/or our 3 Academies (Victoria, U. of Toronto, U. of Calgary). Most
of the High Performance Centres are affiliated with local universities and were developed to provide all of the
advantages of the NCAA program with none of the disadvantages. Here you will find some of the greatest
education opportunities in the world, tutoring and mentorships, performance support staff; massage,
physiotherapy, physiology and no loss of University, Provincial and Federal funding.
CANADA premier

Mike Pinder
The 2010/2011 season marks Coach Mori's 6th season as the Director of Swimming & Head Coach for the LA
Swim Club/I Can Swim and University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. In addition to his passion for swimming and
life, Brad brings a wealth of coaching and competitive swimming experience to the LA Swim Club and Horns
programs.
Over the past quadrennial Coach Mori has successfully been building the U of L and LASC programs through a
fundamental philosophy:"build great people and you will build a great athlete. Through competitive swimming,
experience life." Mori has placed multiple swimmers on Swimming Canada's Youth/Junior teams and
Provincial teams. He coached medal performances at provincial, western, national and international events.
But it is "personal achievement through diligent process and development" that Mori stresses the most to the
swimmers he coaches.
