He is also Director of the Centre for Initiatives in Spirituality and Reconciliation (InSpiRe: www.stmarys.ac.uk/inspire). As a theologian and registered psychotherapist he has worked in particular on the interface of theology and psychology especially through the lens of the Christian mystical tradition which he has explored using Wittgensteinian approaches. His most recent work is The Pursuit of the Soul: Psychoanalysis, Soul-making and the Christian Tradition (T & T Clarke, 2016). He helped found Vinayasadhana, a journal for psychospiritual formation published from Bangalore, India and regularly lectures there on Hindu-Christian relations. Abstract : The contemporary interest in mindfulness in the anglophone world has rekindled possibilities of dialogue between 21st Century secular society and older contemplative traditions – especially within Buddhism and Christianity. The paper begins by considering the nature of mindfulness as widespread amongst contemporary practices of social care, medicine and education before relating it to its roots within the Buddhist tradition. This will be brought into dialogue with the Christian contemplative tradition of oración mental as described in the work of St Teresa of Avila (1515-1582). As well as pointing out ‘family resemblances’ between the three traditions the paper will present a critique of the three approaches using the work of the contemporary Indian Carmelite writer Fr Frances Vineeth CMI and his ongoing work to integrate Buddhist, Hindu and Christian perspectives. For the purposes of this conference my argument will be that the contemporary trope of ‘mindfulness’ allows sufficient ambiguity to enable new ‘think-ways’ to open up from within traditional Eastern and Western perspectives. Plus précisément, nous entendons établir le geste comparatiste à partir d’un concept issu des sciences de l’information, celui d’« interface » We propose to reflect upon the comparative act in the theology of religions. Our method considers the various religious traditions as systems in which each element draws its signification from its differential relatedness to other elements, a relatedness functioning synchronically (the paradigmatic dimension) and diachronically (the syntagmatic dimension). The approach to religious traditions in a systemic perspective allows us to engage in a comparative act, inasmuch as we do not compare isolated elements, but functionings, configurations. More precisely, we intend to establish the comparative act on the basis of a concept issuing from the information sciences, that of “interface”. To talk about rationalities, we could talk about peoples. These are old questions about races and ethnics witch still appears under the new and noble cover as rationalities. The question is always the same; it is not about the nature of the other but the relation with him. The rationality is not in neurones, it is the treasure witch every community keeps in his traditions. Method: the theories of ethnicity, especially that of F. Barth, will be for me a frame of theory to analyse the relation wanted by the rationalities through the sacred stories of the traditions studied. I study here the sacred story of Gilgamesh and the sacred story of Adam and Eve. Aim: I wish to think about dialogue. The major contribution that this study wish to bring to the debate is to understand the kind of relation that the rationalities like to have between themselves, instead of imposing one to them. Contribution to theology: the determination of an appropriate relation between the rationalities on the model of ethnicity is very useful to formulate theologically a relation to the world and to the cultures, and to promote a right relation between the Christian beliefs and between religions.
