TORONTO-HAMILTON.
The general
councillor for the Interamerica Region, Fr.
Esteban Ortiz, made the extraordinary
visitation of our community from April
17th to 21st. He gave us 4 meditations
and 3 conferences during his stay. In
addition, he met with each confrere for
about an hour. He held meetings with the
members of the House council, the Parish
council, the School Principal of Don
Bosco,
the
coordinator
of
the
Cooperators and the Volunteers of Don
Bosco. All in all, it was a busy but very
fruitful visit if we judge by his final report
and recommendations.
Fr. George Harkins and Bro. Bernie
Dubé represented the Toronto-Hamilton
community at the blessing of the newly
renovated 3rd floor of the Youth Center
in Montreal on May 20th. In addition,
they assisted at the presentation of the
Final Report on the Extraordinary
Visitation of the Salesian Vice-Province of
Canada. They likewise represented the
Toronto community at the Jubilee
celebrations for Fr. Romeo Trottier and
Bro Gerard Richard in Sherbrooke on the
following day.
Bro. Jim Zettel arrived at Don Bosco
Residence on May 25th after a short stay
with his family in Hanover, ON. He will
remain with us until June 14th, at which
time he will leave for his summer
assignment in Surrey B.C. - Bro. Yuriy has
requested to return to his native Ukraine
for his second year of practical training.
He has really appreciated and enjoyed
his experience with Canadian youth. He
will leave Toronto on June 15th. Thanks

At our celebration of the feast of
Mary, Help of Christians, Fr. Joseph Occhio
delivered a most solemn panegyric on Our
Lady, the Immaculate Help of Christians,
Don Bosco's Madonna. By the way, Fr. will
undergo a second hip operation within the
next six months.
Our eldest confrere, Fr. Ivan
Dobresek is doing well after being
admitted into the hospital on
May 26th for what at first seemed to be
heart trouble. He is now out of intensive
care. He keeps inquiring when he can go
home. Please keep him in your prayer.
The

Center
of
the

Cooperators will hold their 6
annual
mini-congress on Saturday June 24th in St.
Benedict's Parish Hall. The theme of the
conferences and workshops is « O
Canada!: Reflections on our National
Anthem.». For more information of

416-745-2906. - The 20th annual “PetitLacasse-Harkins Golf Tournament” will
take place on June 3rd at the Sherbrooke
Country Club. Over 100 participants are
expected. All profits go to both the Sports
Department and the Foundation of the
Séminaire to help needy students.
Bro. Steve Aldorasi recently
animated a symposium on" Decoding the
Da Vinci Code." Young people between
the ages of 14 and 35 listened with great
interest to the insights and contrasts
between the facts and fiction of this very
controversial book and movie. There
were questions galore and clear answers
as well.

SHERBROOKE. Fin du mois de Marie, presque la
fin de l’année scolaire. Où est passée l’année
scolaire 2005-2006? Des jeunes qui disent avoir
commencé leur secondaire il y a peu de temps sont
déjà inscrits au CEGEP ou à une autre institution et
sont à préparer fébrilement leur bal de finissants!
Les activités de fin d’année défilent à un rythme
effarant!
Sportives,
culturelles,
scientifiques,touristiques…eh oui! Il y a aussi du
scolaire!!!
Starmania, méga opéra rock, était présenté
au gymnase du Séminaire les 5 et 6 mai. Un
déploiement féerique qui a permis de voir et
d’entendre plus d’une vingtaine de jeunes sur scène!
Et le lendemain, c’était le Gala des Coups de cœur
qui clôturait la saison des pièces de théâtre. Il y eut
de nombreuses excursions, d’autres encore à venir.
Les voyages forment la jeunesse, dit-on. Sur la
liste : New York et Boston, l’expérience
linguistique et sportive du 16 au 22 mai en Caroline
du Nord (initiation au surf, tout en visitant les
attraits touristiques environnants), le rafting des
anciens/nes sur la Rivière Rouge avec le P. Bob,
etc. Les élèves de la 2ième secondaire ont fait leur
traditionnel « pèlerinage » à Montréal, visitant le
Centre des Sciences, Imax et l’Oratoire St-Joseph.
Et le 7 juin, ce sera la sortie générale de fin d’année
(sauf pour ceux qui sont suspendus….réalité de la
vie, ça aussi!) : plus d’une quarantaine d’activités
offertes aux jeunes (manifestation au Mont-Orford
en faveur de l’une ou l’autre des options n’en est
pas une…).
Mai fut le mois de l’activité physique Et le
Mondo-Bosco- tournoi de soccer durant tout le mois
de mai sur l’heure du midi, sous le soleil ou la
pluie!- remporte encore cette année un succès
monstre, suscitant l’enthousiasme de la totalité des
1ère et 2ième secondaires – quelque 320 jeunes. Dix
classes, dix pays, dix équipes. À la remise des prix,
trophées et médailles le 30 mai au gymnase, tous
nos sportifs étaient là, chaque pays avec son
drapeau et ses T-shirts distinctifs – des arcs-en-ciel
de couleurs! La médaille d’or va à l’Espagne,
l’argent à la Jamaïque, le bronze à la Grèce. Bravo à
Marie-Josée Pariseau et à son équipe, membres du
personnel et jeunes, pour un événement sportif et
éducatif bien organisé et très réussi!
Dans la soirée, c’est le Gala Hommage à nos
Jeunes au Théâtre Granada pour souligner les efforts
soutenus de tous nos élèves et la fierté d’avoir
accompli quelque chose à caractère scolaire, sportif,
culturel ou social. La personne introduite au Temple
de la Renommée cette année fut Étienne Godbout.
Âgé de 25 ans et ancien du Salésien, il a été capitaine
de l’équipe de soccer des Carabins de l’Université de
Montréal et a un CV très impressionnant.
En plus de peinture et d‘entretien ordinaire, 2
petits chantiers amélioreront l’école cet été : le
réaménagement des locaux de professeurs de la 1ère
sec. au Pavillon, rassemblant tous leurs bureaux en
un même endroit au 2ème , et celui du lab. des
sciences au 2ème cycle (pour ce dernier, une
subvention a été obtenue).
Du côté de la vie de la communauté,
l’événement principal fut la visite extraordinaire du
représentant du Supérieur Général. Provenant de
Rome, le P. Esteban Ortiz est arrivé ici le 10 mai et y
a passé 5 jours. Pour en savoir davantage sur cette
visite qui comporte beaucoup de mystère pour les
non-initiés, veuillez référer au prochain numéro de
ÉCHOS SALÉSIENS. Le dernier jour de sa visite
dans notre Province St-Joseph, nous avons rejoint les
autres confrères au Centre des Jeunes à Montréal
pour entendre le rapport de sa visite et participer à la
bénédiction des nouveaux locaux provinciaux, du
bureau des Œuvres et Missions de Don Bosco et de la
Résidence adjacente St-François de Sales, tous les
trois au 3ème étage du CdJ.
Une autre date marquante de ce mois fut la
célébration de deux jubilés : le 50e de vie salésienne
du Fr. Gérard Richard et le 40e de sacerdoce du P.
Roméo Trottier. L’Eucharistie d’action de grâce,
présidée par le P. Luc Lantagne, eut lieu au MontSte-Famille chez les Petites Sœurs de la Ste-Famille
le dimanche 21 mai. Puis les quelque 120 invités se
rendirent au Salésien à la Salle Père-Décarie pour les
agapes et de bons moments de fraternité. Plusieurs
membres des familles des jubilaires étaient de la fête.
Nous nous sommes unis à la grande famille
salésienne du monde entier le 24 mai pour célébrer la
fête de la patronne principale de notre Congrégation,
Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice. Ce jour-là, notre Recteur
Majeur, Don Pascual Chavez, se trouvait à Turin,
présidant l’une des eucharisties et participant à la
grande procession traditionnelle dans les rues de la
ville. Ce jour-là, à l’audience régulière du mercredi,
Benoît XVI mentionnait aussi ce titre de Marie à
quelques reprises : « Aujourd’hui, disait le Pape, ma
pensée se tourne spontanément vers la très Sainte
Vierge Marie, que nous invoquons par le titre
d’Auxiliatrice. Que ce soit elle l’étoile lumineuse
qui éclaire notre chemin chrétien, et que ce soit elle
qui nous inspire et nous soutienne à tout moment
dans notre pèlerinage quotidien vers la patrie
éternelle. » Et en slovaque, le Pape ajoutait : «
L’Église aujourd’hui fait mémoire de Marie,
auxiliatrice du peuple chrétien. À l’exemple de
l’apôtre saint Jean, prenez vous aussi Marie chez
vous, et faites-lui place dans votre existence
quotidienne ».
Le 25 mai, je représentais les salésiens au
lancement des fêtes du centenaire de la paroisse
Ste-Claire à Montréal. Le P. Georges Parent, curé
lui aussi de cette paroisse que les salésiens ont
remise au diocèse en juin 2004, était présent aussi.

SURREY, B.C. The first Monday of the month
was the feast of St. Joseph the Worker and our
Community Day. That morning our special guests,
along with Fr. Luc, left for Edmonton. Mid-morning
we went over Fr. Esteban’s community report in
depth to see how we would tackle the challenges
placed before us. Fr. Mario Villaraza, with his
computer skills, has compiled the Salesian
Educative-Pastoral Project: Youth Ministry Manuel
Made Simple, which was originally designed in
2003 by Fr. Mario A.Villegas Baclig, SDB, in
Rome. It will be a helping guide for reflection and
for developing a community mission statement, our
own personal spiritual vision, as well as a structure
for animating our local youth ministry. Definitely
we have our work cut out for us, and it has begun
on a positive note.
On May 13th, The Youth for Christ Pacific
Region held a day of prayer, sharing, workshops,
sport competitions, talks, etc. with music, band,
dance and winners awards in an all day event held
at our Don Bosco Youth Center. Over 300 youths of
all ages participated. The actual Conference will be
held in Montreal sometime in August. MAJESTY is
a one day event where youth from all Chapters of
the Pacific Region gathers to celebrate its diversity,
talents, skills, but most importantly, they gather to
celebrate their love of God.
The same day, First Communion had ninetyeight youngsters. A packed church, a sunny
morning, four home made symbolic banners,
musicians and one of our seven choirs helped to
make their day extra special. The following day,
Mother’s Day, had eight Polish youngsters receive
their First Communion. Every evening for one week
these parents and their children will attend Mass and
receive Communion in the Polish custom known as
“The White Mass.” It is an extended opportunity
for each family to pray together.
Moving about! Bro. Jerry went to Red Deer,
AB, for a few days’ rest and to visit a school chum,
Fr. Donald Stein, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish
celebrating its 100th Anniversary. Fr. Michael
Korceba recently flew to Toronto for a week’s
evaluation at the South Down Centre; he has since
returned to Rome. Let us remember to keep him in
our prayer. Fr. Tadeusz Goryczka returned from a
week’s vacation that took him to Colonia, Calgary,
Banff, Jasper, and Lake Louise. On the trip he
enjoyed the company of Mr. & Mrs. Anthony
Jochlin, parishioners, who were kind enough to show
Father these beautiful sights. Fr. John Basso and
Bro. Jerry represented the community at the
dedication of the new Mission Office in Montreal;
Bro. Jerry also attended the Provincial Council
meeting and concluding conference given by Fr.
Esteban Ortiz. They then went to Sherbrooke to
participate in the Jubilee feast.
Fr. Basso returned from Montreal in time to
solemnly celebrate the feast of Mary Help of
Christians with a special concelebrated Mass in the
evening. Prior to that special occasion, a novena of
prayers, in her honor, had been made after the daily
Masses. Our Lady of Good Counsel School honored
their helpful Mother at a Children’s Mass blest with
song and loads of flowers for her shrine. On the
following Sunday, a Marian Procession with all the
various Madonna pictures and statues certainly gave
witness to our neighborhood of our parishioners’
love for Mary under her various titles. They said the
rosary, sang, carried flowers and candles. They were
led by the Don Bosco Knights of Columbus who
acted as Honor Guards and Flag Bearers. About eight
hundred people braved the weather elements to
participate and walk in this block long parish event
as the statue of Mary Help of Christians was carried
aloft. Umbrellas made their quick appearance
towards the end of the event when sprinkles rained
down blessings.
The beautiful, but wet month of May
concludes with the feast of the Visitation of Mary,
which happens to coincide with our weekly
Wednesday novena devotions to Our Lady of
Perpetual Help.

Vers la ‘vénérabilité’ de Maman Marguerite
Cité du Vatican . Le vendredi 26 mai, la
Commission des experts théologiens de la
Congrégation pour les Causes des Saints a exprimé
un avis favorable à l’unanimité concernant le
caractère héroïque de la vie, des vertus et de la
renommée de sainteté de la Servante de Dieu
Margherita Occhiena, maman de Don Bosco (+
1856). Il ne manque que l’avis définitif des
Cardinaux et des Évêques membres de la
Congrégation pour les Causes des Saints, avant que
le Pape donne son accord pour que Maman
Marguerite soit inscrite dans la liste des
"Vénérables" de l’Église universelle. On prévoit
que cela pourra avoir lieu avant le 25 novembre
prochain, 150ème anniversaire de la mort de la mère
de Don Bosco.

Conclusion of the Extraordinary Visitation of
the Vice Province of Canada
MONTREAL On 20 May, the Extraordinary
Visitation of the Canada Vice Province (CAN) by
Fr Esteban Ortiz, Councillor for the Salesian
Interamerica Region, which began on 16 April,
came to an end. The final meeting held in the new
headquarters in Montreal, was attended by 17
Salesians including Fr Luc Lantagne, Superior of
the Vice Province, and his Council. On the same
day the new premises of the Missionary Office in
Canada which, together with the Provincial House,
has been transferred from Sherbrooke were blessed.
Present for the blessing were representatives of the
Salesian Family and of the Daughters of Mary Help
of Christians in Canada. Previously on 13 May, Fr
Ortiz had received the promise of 7 new Salesian
Cooperators from the Ste-Claire Centre at the
St.Dominic Savio Mission in Montreal.
