Overall Comments
Congratulations to all of the participants in the 2013 Euclid Contest. The average score in 2013 was 48.8. We were
very pleased that a large number of students achieved some success on the early parts of the last few problems on
the paper. At the same time, the later parts of these problems managed to challenge the top students even more
than last year’s problems. Special congratulations go to the 25 official contestants who achieved scores of 90 and
higher this year.
We at the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing believe strongly that it is very important for
students to both learn to solve mathematics problems and learn to write good solutions to these problems. Many
students do a reasonable job of writing solutions, while others still include no explanation whatsoever.
Special thanks go to the Euclid Problems Committee that annually sets the Contest problems and manages
to achieve a very difficult balancing act of providing both accessible and challenging problems on the same paper.
To the students who wrote, the parents who supported them, and the teachers who helped them along the
way, thank you for your continuing participation and support. We hope that you enjoyed the Contest and relished
the challenges that it provided. We hope that mathematics contests continue to feed your love for and interest in
mathematics.
Specific Comments
1. Average: 9.1
This question was well done, with very few arithmetic errors. Common errors included an answer such as
−113 in part (a) that does not fit with the conditions given in the question.
2. Average: 8.8
Parts (a) and (c) were well done. Part (b) was fairly well done. A common error in part (b) included taking
the reciprocal of both sides of the positive quantities and not changing the direction of the inequalities. Some
students used trigonometry for part (c) and as a result obtained an approximate answer.
3. Average: 7.1
Part (a) was fairly well done. A common mistake was giving an answer for the number of terms that were
even, rather than the number of terms that were odd. Some students gave a correct answer for only the
first 99 terms of the Fibonacci sequence. Part (b) was well done. Students presented a variety of algebraic
solutions that involving formulae for sequences or for linear functions.
4. Average: 6.3
Part (a) was fairly well done. A number of students did not include the five single digit positive integers
in the total. Part (b) was well done. Students demonstrated knowledge of solving a quadratic equation
algebraically by factoring. Many students did not finish their solution by writing a concluding statement
with the ordered pairs.
5. Average: 6.1
Part (a) was fairly well done. Most students created some kind of chart to enumerate the possible combinations of rolls. In part (b), most students were able to correctly determined the coordinates of the vertex
V and the coordinates of the points of intersection between the parabola and the line. Many students then
were not sure how to calculate squares of the distances between the various points.
6. Average: 4.4
In part (a), many students correctly determined the length of the diameter of the plate. Most who did this
correctly then also correctly determined the areas required, but some misused the formula for the area of
the circle or miscalculated the radius of the plate or the area of the slice of pizza. While marking part (b),

our markers became experts at discerning the many different forms of the correct answer! Lots of students
started by labelling one side length of one triangle with a variable and then used the given information to
calculate a number side lengths as possible in terms of this variable and θ. The keys to finishing this problem
was persistence, and eventually eliminating the variable introduced at the beginning.
7. Average: 3.2
In part (a), some students expressed tan x in terms of cos x and sin x, but proceeded no further. Others were
able to rearrange to obtain an equation like 1 − sin x = 3 cos x. Many squared both sides of this equation to
find two possible numerical values for sin x, but did not double check both values in the original equation.
In part (b), students had to determine the equation for the inverse function of an arbitrary linear function.
Many did this successfully and then substituted into the given equation to try to solve for a and b. Others
noticed that since f (x) − g(x) equals a constant, then the given line and its inverse function must be parallel,
and so must have slope 1 or −1.
8. Average: 2.1
In part (a), quite a few students make some crucial observations about the problem (for example, a3 < 2013
and so a < 13, a must be odd, etc.). However, many students also missed the “boundary” case of (a, b) =
(1, 1006), forgetting that 1 is also a divisor of 2013. Many students found at least one of the three desired
solutions. Part (b) was a very complicated problem involving exponents and logarithms. Many students
did not apply logarithm rules correctly or invented incorrect logarithm rules. The students who solved this
problem correctly noticed that grouping similar quantities and finding a pattern are crucial to the solution.
9. Average: 1.2
Part (a) was generally well done by many students. There were many solutions in the form of text without
any mathematical rigour. These often included statements along the lines of “if I move this square up a bit,
this trapezoid’s area goes down a bit”. Mathematics does require explanation, but it also requires equations
and precision in the explanation. In part (b), a construction was generally needed as a first step. There
are two main constructions that yield the correct proof: congruent triangles may be placed outside or inside
the inner square. Many students did not sufficiently prove congruence of these triangles – saying they are
“obviously” congruent is not a strong enough argument. This was a very difficult problem that students
either could not approach, or would make incorrect or unhelpful constructions, or would leave out crucial
details in the proof.
10. Average: 0.3
In parts (a) and (b), students generally tried to compute the desired quantities by listing all possible partitions. Quite often, students were off-by-one in part (a), or off my more than one in part (b). In order to
develop a correct solution, many students correctly noticed that P (4 × 5m ) = P (9 × 2m ), since when prime
factorizations have the same structure, the number of partitions will be the same.

1. Moyenne: 9,1
Cette question a été bien réussie. On a constaté peu d’erreurs d’arithmétique.
