Pour plus de détails veuillez visiter http://www.sante.uottawa.ca/chaire-medico-legaux/index.htm Chaire de recherche universitaire sur le transfert des connaissances aux patients/ University Research Chair in Knowledge Translation to Patients/ Patient-direct knowledge translation (KT) is the process of moving evidence into action by actively engaging patients to enhance their knowledge, experience, service use, health behaviour, and health outcomes. These KT interventions can also enhance health literacy, increase participation in decision making and self-care, and improve patient safety. Patient-mediated KT interventions are targeted at patients but aim to change health professionals’ behaviour through patient-provider interaction. Internationally recognized for her expertise in KT to patients, Dr. Dawn Stacey is the Director of the Patient Decision Aids Research Group at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. From May 2013 to May 2014, she had 29 new peer-reviewed publications, 3 book chapters, 3 non-peer reviewed publications (14 first authored by graduate students), and $1.3 million in funding ($760k as PI). Invited by the board of directors of the Academic Medical Centre of the University of Amsterdam, Dr. Stacey is giving the 16th Anna Reynvaan Lecture on May 22, 2014 titled “Shared Decision Making: What is the role for nurses?” This annual lecture, referred to as the “Dutch Florence Nightingale”, has an aim to educate and inspire nurses, media, researchers, and other healthcare professionals in the Netherlands and Belgium. Further information is available on her research program website http://decisionaid.ohri.ca. Chaire de recherche de HEEO pour les enfants, la jeunesse et leurs familles/ CHEO Research Chair in Nursing Care of Children, Youth and their Families Denise Harrison holds the Chair in Nursing Care of Children, Youth and Families at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario CHEO. She has honorary research appointments at the OHRI, the Ottawa Hospital and in Australia which facilitate collaborative research within Ontario, across Canada and internationally. Denise’s program of research ‘Be Sweet to Babies’ focuses on pain management for sick and healthy infants and children, and involves primary research, conduct of systematic reviews and knowledge translation research. Current projects include randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of sugar water during blood draws in sick infants and children, a YouTube study evaluating the effectiveness of the team’s own YouTube video on improving pain management during immunizations, systematic reviews of RCTs evaluating pain management strategies in infants and children, utilization of pain management strategies in neonatal units throughout Ontario, and a research to action project during the annual CHEO family flu clinic. Denise has published almost 50 papers, and since commencing her Chair position in 2011, has received almost 2 million dollars in research funding as a Principal and Co-Investigator. Denise is building 10 ÉCOLE DES SCIENCES INFIRMIÈRES UNIVERSITÉ D’OTTAWA SCHOOL OF NURSING UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA her graduate student pool, and is keen to recruit more graduate students interested in pain research in infants and children. It was jointly organized with the Human Rights Education and Research Centre at University of Ottawa and the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network. In the winter semester (2014), the UCRH organized a documentary film festival for health sciences students and presented four critically acclaimed documentaries. In the spring semester (2014), the UCRH co-organized (with University Research Chair in Sexual Health and HIV at Concordia University, Universities Without Walls, and Réseau jeunes chercheurs sciences sociales et VIH/sida – FRANCE) a writing seminar for novice francophone researchers at Concordia University. Members of the Committee have been actively involved in various projects. This year, a working group has worked on standardizing the laboratory evaluations and the next phase of this project consists in linking students’ online laboratory evaluations with their clinical online evaluations. Recognizing the importance of medication administration for patient safety, a yearly medication calculation exam has been implemented in years 2 and 3 of the program and next year in year 4. Since as of June 2015, the graduating students will be writing the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) different strategies have been put in place to help prepare the students to write this new style of exam. For professors, a toolkit has been developed and a workshop has been offered to help develop NCLEX style exam questions. Graduate students have access to 50 work stations located on the ground and 3rd floors of Roger-Guindon Hall and utilize them regularly. Many of our students have received internal and external scholarships, namely the Community Health Scholarship and the Registered Nurses’ Foundation of Ontario Research Awards, as well as funding from CIHR and other agencies. There were three (3) well attended 14 ÉCOLE DES SCIENCES INFIRMIÈRES UNIVERSITÉ D’OTTAWA SCHOOL OF NURSING UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA Nursing Research Rounds at the school, which brought together students, clinicians, faculty and researchers; Webminars will be considered for the 2014-15 academic year. Comité affaires internationales/ International Affairs Committee The committee met three times over the course of this academic year. We decided to focus on a few key priorities which will be highlighted in this short report. Table was created to maintain an annual count of Postdoctoral fellowship experiences within the School of Nursing; the committee provided input into the development of the University of Ottawa, School of Nursing MOUS with University of West Indies, Kingston-Jamaica and Great Lakes University of Kisumu, Kenya, both led by Dr Nancy Edwards. Both MOUs were presented at the School Council by Committee Chair, Dr Etowa on April 29/2014.and approved unanimously. Tip Sheet for professors interested in International Graduate Students and Post-docs was developed. The committee was also consulted about International visitors to the School and arranged for meetings with Guests as necessary such including the delegates from China and assisted the Faculty of Medicine with coordinating a tour of the simulation lab at Lees Campus for Guest from Kings’ University Saudi Arabia. With the support of a Research Assistant a table was created to document the School of Nursing faculty involvement in international postdoctoral fellow supervision. To operationalize the Committee’s strategic plan and facilitate collaboration beyond the School of Nursing, the committee contacts the various schools within the Faculty of Health Sciences, to identify faculty international work and existing infrastructure and resources to support international work. There was limited information gathered in this first round. A follow-up contact will be initiated in the future. Faculty members in the SON were also contacted to gather information for the development of database for Faculty International Initiative. This is a means of assessing current strengths within the School. Of nursing and will be updated annually. Given the current focus of committee on research and graduate student work, the Algonquin Committee Rep, decided to not to remain an active member on the International Initiative Committee. She noted, 15 ÉCOLE DES SCIENCES INFIRMIÈRES UNIVERSITÉ D’OTTAWA SCHOOL OF NURSING UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA “Algonquin’s primary interest has been to seek learning and engagement opportunities for under-graduate nursing students.” Committee collaborated with the Diversity Committee and the Aboriginal Student s’ Recruitment and Retention Initiative to implement a Diversity educational workshop/Blanket exercise. We continue to seek greater participation from Faculty and student in the work of the committee in 2014-2015. Comité diversité/ Diversity Committee The Diversity Committee is a Standing Committee of the School of Nursing (SON) created in 2012. Membership includes 4 tenured or tenure-track faculty members (Gifford, Etowa, Foth, Gagnon) and 4 student members - 2 graduate students (Nazon, Li) and 2 undergraduate students (Malmi, Gray) representing both the French and English programs. The purpose of the committee is to understand diversity within the School of Nursing and develop mechanisms that foster an inclusive environment for students and faculty to learn and work free of discrimination. During the 2013-2014 academic year the committee had 4 formal meetings (October, February, April, May). The focus of the meetings was to develop an Operating Plan based on the 5 strategic objectives. At three of the meetings we hosted guests that included: representatives from the University of Ottawa Human Rights Office (Ruel, Bourque, Nigam) to discuss different university perspective related to human rights and diversity; Ombudsman (Allaire) from the University of Ottawa to understand the results and context of the SON diversity survey that was administered in 2012; and a former President of the Health Science Student Association (2010/11) (Valela) who is working with different faculty members in the SON on issues related to the LGBTQ community and is collaborating with the Diversity committee to develop strategies to address the strategic objectives within the operating plan. The Diversity Committee co-sponsored its first event, the Blanket Exercise, delivered in partnership with Kairos Canada and Elder Albert Dumont, and co-sponsored by the Aboriginal Students Recruitment and Retention Initiative, the SON International Committee, and the Loyer-DaSilva Research Chair in Public Health Nursing. The event was held on April 25 and attracted approximately 25 participants from the university community. Directions for the 2014/2015 academic year include formalizing the operating plan and bring it to school council for approval, and moving forward with initiatives and events as identified in the operating plan. Comité du personnel en double affectation et professeurs auxiliaires/ Joint Appointees and Adjuncts Committee 2013-2014 Report/ Current members of the University of Ottawa School of Nursing Joint Appointee and Adjunct Working Group include two faculty, two joint appointees, and two adjunct professors: Joy Noel-Weiss (chair), Michelle Lalonde (co-chair), Brenda Martelli (CHEO), Carl Balsam (Montfort), Kathy Momtahan (TOH), and Nancy Brookes (The Royal). Betty Cragg attended as a guest and provided institutional memory. Line Binda (OPH) attended the meetings this year as a guest from Ottawa Public Health. The committee met twice this year in December and May and joined The Ottawa Hospital Nursing Research Work Group and Tau Gamma to organize a meet and greet for nurses in the Champlain LHIN with research interests to get to know each. The committee kept the list of joint appointees and adjuncts updated and worked to ensure they have library privileges and are receiving updates and announcements from the School of Nursing. The working group is developing a terms of reference to become a standing committee at the SON. 16 ÉCOLE DES SCIENCES INFIRMIÈRES UNIVERSITÉ D’OTTAWA SCHOOL OF NURSING UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA Comité de nominations/ Nomination Committee Cette année encore, l’École a pu compter sur ses membres pour assurer le bon fonctionnement des comités. Again, we wish to thank those who have renewed their mandates, and those who have stepped forward to answer calls for nominations. Enfin, un site web donne une plus grande visibilité au CIESPI. http://www.sante.uottawa.ca/ciespi/index.htm APORIA – THE NURSING JOURNAL Funded in January 2008, Aporia – The Nursing Journal is a peer-reviewed, bilingual, and open access journal dedicated to scholarly debates in nursing and the health sciences, hosted within the School of Nursing.
