The studio and seminar will be conducted in partnership with the city and canton of Basel as well as the International Building
Exhibition IBA Basel 2020. Under the guiding theme “growing together” and “together growing” the IBA Basel seeks innovative
answers and visionary projects regarding the common development of the trinational region Basel. As a contribution to the IBA
Basel, the studio will explore how the Rhine and its waterfronts can serve as a connective space and symbolic heart for this
cross-border area.
In many respects, the future development of the Rhine harbors is of special importance for the trinational agglomeration
of Basel. They play an indispensable role in the supply of mass goods to an entire country. From an urban perspective, the
Rhine River serves as a backbone for the whole region. In this way, the harbors in the border triangle between Switzerland,
Germany, and France hold a central position. The Rhine also forms a large open and natural space, not only for places abutting
the water, but also for bordering districts. As with all central locations, many demands are made upon this shared space, and
these demands may at first glance appear to conflict with one another. Considering that the further development of the port
industry will only make sense in conjunction with strategies and plans that cross national boundaries, it is necessary to develop
complementary concepts for both the urban and port developments of the bordering harbors and cities.
As specific studio site and IBA performance space, we have chosen the Rhine Island and Harbor in Basel North, which is
directly located along the border triangle. Currently, the area is marked by port infrastructure, containers, silos, warehouses,
tanks, railway and sorting lines, as well as functional and office buildings that date from the past century. Adjacent to this port
zone lie the two residential districts of Kleinhüningen and Klybeck, which are isolated, suffer from pollution and noise from the
port activities, and are urgently in need of modernization. Current plans propose to update harbor logistics and to relocate parts
of the port away from the waterside and towards the railway. With the implementation of these plans, new areas along the
Rhine will become free for urban development.
The studio will develop ideas for a mixed-use urban waterfront that connects city and port functions across national borders.
Based on the results of our current studio, we will further elaborate urban design and architectural proposals for the phased
restructuring of the Rhine Island, as well as for its connections with the harbor and surrounding districts in Basel (CH), Weil
am Rhein (D), and Huningue (F). Major themes of the studio will be the transformation, activation and urban development of
the area through a mixture of informal and formal uses, low budget/ high culture and high budget / low culture. The existing
qualities on the site and along the Rhine can be strengthened in a number of ways: former oil tanks and silos can be converted
into leisure parks and cultural centers, harbor piers into urban islands, and empty warehouses into temporary spaces for urban
pioneers.
In the future, the Rhine must be reconceived as a connecting element of the trinational metropolis, and its waterfronts must be
developed in cooperation with neighbors. The goal is to create high-quality places for living, working and recreation along the
water that consider the many characters and identities that are already present.

The studio and integrated project course are structured into six interrelated streams.
We will produce a comprehensive inventory and mapping of our site and its context. Constant interpretation of our
analyses will inform the design process.
The design process will begin with a visioning phase, in which you will develop ideas and themes for your studio
project. These ideas will then be further developed into design concepts, strategies, and proposals throughout the
semester: first, on an urban design scale, focusing on the transformation and development of a new waterfront
for the Rhine island; and second, on an architectural scale with detailed proposals for indvidual building fields and
buildings. The proposals on both scales will be refined in iterative exploration, design, and modeling loops.
We will build and heavily use models as design tools to develop adequate urban structures, spatial configurations,
and building typologies for our project.
A lecture series will give you a broader perspective on contemporary urbanism and architecture. It will include
introductions to the studio and seminar topics, input from local actors and stakeholders, as well as presentations
and readings on related urban design and architectural issues.
The research work will mainly concentrate on waterfront developments, including case studies and cross-case
comparisons of European harbor cities such as Amsterdam (Eastern Docklands, Borneo Sporenburg), Copenhagen
(Island Brygge, Nordhaven), Dublin (Docklands), Duisburg (Inner Harbor), Düsseldorf (Medienhafen), Frankfurt
(Westhafen), Hamburg (Hafen City), Köln (Rheinauhafen), London (Docklands, Canary Wharf), Malmö (BoO1), Nantes
(Island), Rotterdam (Kop van Zuid, Müllerpier, Waalhaven), Oslo (Bjørvika). These critical studies will serve as basis
and reference examples for the studio projects.
Throughout the semester, you will write about your design and research project, helping you to guide and document
the progress of your work. All work will be published in a book and featured at an exhibition at the IBA Basel.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The learning goal is to gain advanced skills and experience in urban design and architecture, concept development,
visionary thinking, and presentation techniques, which will enable students to tackle complex urban challenges
and to synthesize their knowledge into a design project. The studio and seminar seek to provide a comprehensive
package linking design, research theory and practice.
Basel is a world-famous capital for art and architecture and you will learn a lot about contemporary architecture
and urban design from the local master architects such as Peter Zumthor, Herzog & de Meuron, Diener & Diener,
and Morger & Degelo, and also from us.

AGGLOMERATION
L’Europe se caractérise par un réseau de villes et
d’agglomérations qui s’est développé au fil de
l’histoire. Ces conurbations revêtent une grande
importance. C’est là que vit la grande majorité de
la population et qu’est générée une grande partie
de la richesse, mais c’est également là que sont
consommées la plupart des ressources. De nos jours,
les zones urbanisées, qui continuent certes de présenter de forts caractères locaux, viennent s’inscrire
dans un contexte supra-régional, voire mondial.
Nous habitons à un endroit, travaillons dans un
autre, participons à des réunions et avons des
clients dans toute la région, et au delà, dans
d’autres villes ou d’autres pays. La densification
territoriale donnant naissance à de grandes agglomérations performantes, reliées les unes aux
autres, continuera de se développer et deviendra
un facteur clé pour l’avenir de l’Europe.
Europa ist gekennzeichnet durch ein historisch
gewachsenes Netz aus Städten und Ortschaften.
Diese urbanen Ballungsräume sind von großer
Bedeutung. In ihnen lebt der überwiegende Teil der
Bevölkerung, dort wird ein grosser Teil der Wertschöpfung generiert, aber dort werden auch die
meisten Ressourcen verbraucht. Schon heute sind
die nach wie vor lokal geprägten Siedlungslandschaften in einen überregionalen, wenn nicht gar
globalen Kontext eingebettet. Wir wohnen hier,
arbeiten dort, haben Meetings und Kunden in der
gesamten Region und weit darüber hinaus in anderen Städten und Ländern. Die Entwicklung der
räumlichen Verdichtung zu grossen und leistungsfähigen Agglomerationsräumen, die wiederum
untereinander vernetzt sind, wird sich fortsetzen
und für die Zukunft Europas von entscheidender
Bedeutung sein.

eine Agglomeration
Beispielhaft für die Zukunft der europäischen
Städte steht der Schauplatz der Internationalen
Bauausstellung IBA Basel 2020: die trinationale
Agglomeration Basel. Eingebettet in die grossen
Landschaftsräume Vogesen, Schwarzwald und
Jura, entsteht beidseitig des Rheins ein dichter
Wirtschafts- und Lebensraum, dessen 226 Städte
und Gemeinden sich auf drei Länder, fünf Kantone,
ein Département und einen Landkreis verteilen.
Die kulturelle, soziale und wirtschaftliche Vielfalt,
die diesem Raum allein durch seine geografische
Lage gegeben ist, wird durch den Prozess der Globalisierung noch grösser. Dank den hochwertigen
Arbeitsplätzen, der ausgezeichneten Verkehrsanbindung, dem attraktiven Bildungs- und Freizeitangebot und der abwechslungsreichen Landschaft
zieht die Agglomeration Basel heute Menschen aus
allen Teilen der Welt an. Und es ist gerade dieses
vielfältige Nebeneinander, das als eine zentrale

TYPIQUE
L’agglomération trinationale de Bâle, le lieu choisi
pour réaliser l’Exposition Internationale d’Architecture IBA Basel 2020, est symbolique pour l’avenir des villes européennes. Cette région, enserrée
par les grands massifs des Vosges, du Jura et de la
Forêt-Noire, a vu se développer, de part et d’autre
du Rhin, un bassin de vie et d’activités économiques
très dense, avec 226 villes et communes réparties
sur trois länder, cinq cantons, un département et
un landkreis. La diversité culturelle, sociale et économique que ce territoire doit à sa situation géographique a été accentuée par le processus de
mondialisation. Grâce aux nombreux emplois qualifiés, à l’excellente infrastructure de transports, à
l’attrait de son offre de formations et de loisirs et
à la richesse de ses paysages, l’agglomération de
Bâle attire des personnes du monde entier. C’est
justement cette cohabitation bigarrée qui doit être
considérée comme un atout pour notre territoire ;

Zentral für die Diskussion um die Entwicklung dieses besonderen Raums ist deshalb der
Begriff der Grenze. Der Grossraum Basel ist einerseits geprägt durch die politischen und räumlichen
Grenzen, die Stadt-, Bezirks- und Landesgrenzen.
Andererseits ist er geprägt durch die gesellschaftlichen und sprachlichen Grenzen. Was ist das Verbindende, was das Trennende? Wie lassen sich
Grenzen zugunsten des Ganzen aufheben, ohne
die eigene Identität zu gefährden? Wie kann der
fragmentierte Raum über die Grenzen hinweg
gemeinsam geplant und genutzt werden?

La notion de frontière est par conséquent
l’élément central de toute discussion portant sur
l’avenir de cet espace si particulier. L’agglomération
de Bâle se caractérise par ses frontières politiques
et territoriales, entre les villes, les districts et les
pays, mais aussi par des frontières sociales et linguistiques. Quels sont les éléments qui nous unissent, quels sont ceux qui nous séparent ? Comment
lever ces barrières pour faire valoir l’intérêt commun sans mettre en péril sa propre identité ? Comment aménager et utiliser, ensemble, cet espace
fragmenté, en surmontant les frontières ?
