For seniors in the IB Program, February is the month
when their Extended Essays are due. The Extended
Essay, or EE, is one of the crowning achievements of
an IB student's career. It is an essay of up to 4,000
words on a topic of the students' choice that helps
them develop their academic independence and
prepares them for the research and writing skills they
will need in college. A sampling of this year's topics
gives an idea of the originality and depth of the work
produced. In many cases the topics tie in directly to
the student's future plans. Here are a few examples
from various disciplines:
 "Racial Discrimination and African-American
Participation in the Spanish-American War" (History).
 "Not My Batman: The Differing Artistic Techniques that Contribute to
the Contrast Between Batman of the 1940s and the Batman
of The Dark Knight Returns Mini-series" (Visual Arts) This student has
already been accepted at some of the top art schools in the
country.
 "The Rate of Formation of Calcium Oxalate Crystals in 5 Food
Combinations: an inquiry into cultural prohibitions against eating
certain foods together in China and elsewhere" (Chemistry) For
example, Chinese tradition prohibits combining tofu and spinach,
and it turns out that this combination can produce crystals
leading to kidney stones.
 "'It's My Film and I'll Cry if I want To:' An Exploration of the Relevance
of Auteur Theory in Contemporary Film Media" (Film Studies) This
student has already received early acceptance at NYU's
prestigious Tisch School for the Arts.
 "The Extent to Which Aquatic Plants Can Serve as Buffers for Ocean
Acidification" (Biology)
 "The Effects of Tourism on the Galapagos Islands-an ecological and
economic inquiry" (World Studies) This student used his trilingual
abilities in Spanish, French and English in his research.
The students selected their topics and began working on them in 11th grade,
under the supervision of a faculty advisor. Although the combined marks for
the EE and the Theory of Knowledge course account for at most only
3 points out of the 45 possible points students can achieve in the Diploma
Program, the essay titles alone indicate that the value of the essay in each

New Bus Route
Re-enrollment agreements for next year have
been sent on February 7. Please remember that
the deadline for re-enrollment is today. Thank you
to those of you who have already re-enrolled their
children. Please contact the Admissions Office if
you have any questions.
As you know, for the last three years, we have
been providing a safe and reliable private bus
service from Downtown Boston and Charlestown
and we are currently investigating the possibility of
adding a second bus line from Newton and
Brookline (and maybe Watertown) for next year.
Please contact Barbara Saran to let her know if
you are interested in either bus route for the academic year 2014-2015.

Dissertations en IB
Pour les élèves de Terminale du programme IB, février est le mois où les
dissertations finales doivent être remises. La dissertation finale est l'un des plus
beaux accomplissements du parcours d'un élève d'IB. Il s'agit d'un essai d'au
plus 4 000 mots sur un sujet choisi par l'élève, qui l'aide à développer son
autonomie académique et lui permet d'acquérir les compétences de
recherche et d'écriture nécessaires à l'université. L'éventail des sujets de
cette année donne une idée de l'originalité et de la profondeur du travail
effectué. Dans de nombreux cas, les sujets sont directement liés aux projets
d'avenir de l'étudiant. Voici quelques exemples qui couvrent différentes
disciplines :

ses capacités trilingues en espagnol, en français et en anglais
dans ses recherches.
Les élèves ont choisi leur sujet et ont commencé à travailler sur leur
dissertation en Première, sous la supervision d'un conseiller pédagogique. La
dissertation finale, combinée avec la partie « théorie du savoir » peut
rapporter un maximum de 3 points (sur les 45 points maximum que les élèves
peuvent obtenir au diplôme). Les titres des dissertations montrent à eux seuls
la valeur du développement personnel de chaque élève, qui dépasse de
loin le niveau de la Terminale.

Comme vous le savez, depuis trois ans, nous offrons un service de bus privé
desservant le centre de Boston et Charlestown. Nous envisageons
actuellement d'ajouter un deuxième bus l'année prochaine qui desservirait
