Important Information Regarding CPDA-1 Divided Products
Customer Letter #2007-44
2007-11-28
Dear Colleague
This letter pertains to:
Notification of the Unavailability of
CPDA-1 Divided Products
The purpose of this letter is to inform you that Canadian Blood Services is expecting to consume its
final remaining inventory of CPDA-1 quad collection bags within approximately four weeks. CPDA-1
quad collection bags are used to produce a red cell or frozen plasma component that can be
aliquotted into three pediatric doses.
As previously communicated in Customer Letter # 2005-03 Buffy Coat Production Method, with the
introduction of this production method we are changing the whole blood collection's anticoagulant
from CP2D or CPDA-1 to CPD, red cell preservative from AS-3 to SAGM, and when requested, red
blood cell components will be available with one attached satellite bag. The delay in the
implementation of the Buffy Coat Production method has resulted in the consumption of the CPDA-1
quad collection bags prior to complete implementation of the Buffy Coat Production method.
The main changes affecting hospitals are:
1. CPDA-1 red blood cells with satellite bags attached will no longer be available.
2. The usual RBC component provided to hospitals for both adult and pediatric recipients will be
an RBC unit in additive solution (either AS-3 or where Buffy Coat Production method has been
implemented, SAGM) without a satellite bag. Transfusion medicine laboratories that have
sterile connection devices may choose to use these to create aliquots for pediatric recipients.
3. Alternately for pediatric transfusions, hospitals may order red blood cells collected into CPD
with SAGM with one attached satellite bag. Please notify your local Product Distribution
Laboratory if you wish to receive this product rather than AS-3 (or SAGM) units which have no
satellite bags. We will strive to make these available where requested even if the Buffy Coat
Production Method has not been implemented in that region.
4. Divided frozen plasma will be available for a short time until current inventory is consumed.
After this time, hospitals may order one of our other frozen plasma products for pediatric use.
Further Information
If you have additional questions or concerns that we have not addressed or are not clear please feel
free to contact your local Medical Director or Hospital Liaison Specialist who will be happy to discuss
these matters further.
Sincerely,
Dr. Dana V. Devine, Ph.D.
