T
he 9th annual edition of the Convergences World Forum
held in Paris from 5 to 7 September 2016 follows a phase
where the international community has taken ambitious and
convergent commitments on sustainable development with the
2030 Agenda, on climate with the COP 21 on climate, and the
World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul on humanitarian aid.
Ambitious commitments to solve a seemingly contradictory
equation: on the one hand the need for an accelerated inclusive
growth that could quickly lift out of poverty or extreme poverty an
important part of humanity, and on the other the need for significant investments to rapidly achieve an energy transition which
would contain ongoing global warming.
To achieve this ambitious agenda, it is crucial for all actors
to push in the same direction. And it is to this convergence that
our Forum has been hoping to contribute since its inception. By
serving as a sounding board for all innovative initiatives that
emerge every day, co-constructed by economic, public, and solidarity-based actors.
Last year, the Forum attendees and participants set a shared
objective for the co-construction of a Triple Zero world: Zero Exclusion, Zero Carbon, Zero Poverty.
This 9th Forum, centered around the theme ‘‘Inventing Tomorrow’s Sustainable Cities and Territories’’ aims at deepening this
ambitious objective by reflecting upon the way in which local
actors can play a role towards the construction of this Triple Zero
world. Acknowledged by the Sustainable Development Goals as
key actors of development, and given their thorough knowledge
of their territories, these local actors are becoming around the
world catalysts of often innovative and ambitious initiatives carried forth by their citizens.
Stakeholders gathered at the Convergences World Forum will
participate during those three days in discussions on how to
identify concrete ways to best accompany, support and best replicate such local initiatives to co-construct a Triple Zero world.

a 9e édition annuelle du Forum Mondial Convergences qui se tient à Paris,
du 5 au 7 septembre 2016 fait suite à une séquence où la communauté
internationale a pris des engagements ambitieux et convergents, sur le développement durable avec l’agenda 2030, sur le climat avec la COP 21, et sur l’humanitaire avec le Sommet Humanitaire Mondial d’Istanbul.
Des engagements ambitieux pour résoudre une équation apparemment
contradictoire entre une croissance inclusive accélérée qui puisse rapidement
sortir de la pauvreté voire de l’extrême pauvreté une importante partie de l’humanité et la prise en compte des coûts inhérents à une transition énergétique
rapide qui permette d’endiguer le réchauffement climatique en cours.
Pour réussir cet agenda ambitieux, il est crucial que tous les acteurs fassent
converger leurs efforts. Et c’est bien à cette convergence que notre Forum espère
contribuer depuis sa création. En servant de caisse de résonance à toutes les
initiatives innovantes qui émergent tous les jours, co-construites par des acteurs économiques, publics, associatifs.
Les participants du Forum se sont fixés l’année dernière pour ambition la
co-construction d’un monde Triple Zéro, Zéro exclusion, Zéro carbone, Zéro pauvreté.
Ce 9e Forum, centré sur le thème « Réussir la transition vers des villes et territoires durables » vise à approfondir cette ambition en s’interrogeant sur la
façon dont les acteurs locaux peuvent interagir dans la construction de ce
monde Triple Zéro. Reconnus par les Objectifs de développement durable comme
acteurs incontournables du développement, ces acteurs locaux, grâce à leur
connaissance fine de leurs territoires, sont, de par le monde, devenus des catalyseurs d’initiatives souvent innovantes et ambitieuses portées par leurs citoyens.
Les acteurs réunis au Forum Convergences échangeront durant ces trois jours
pour identifier des manières concrètes d’accompagner, de soutenir et de répliquer au mieux ces initiatives locales pour co-construire un monde Triple Zéro.

At the heart of this dynamic lies the constant emulation
which exits between world cities and strengthens their
influence on the international stage. This is why, following the third United Nations conference on housing
and sustainable urban development in 2016, the City of
Paris is hosting a large international conference on social inclusion at the end of November.
Au cœur de cette dynamique, réside l’émulation constante qu’entretiennent entre elles les métropoles mondiales et qui renforce leur
poids sur la scène internationale. C’est ainsi qu’à la suite de la 3e
conférence des Nations Unies pour le logement et le développement
urbain durable Habitat III d’octobre 2016, la Ville de Paris accueillera
fin novembre une grande conférence mondiale consacrée à l’inclusion
sociale.

promoting a cohesive and ethical development model in
the heart of our cities.

de nos cités.
The 9th Convergences World Forum, which will be held
in Paris from 5th to 7th September 2016, is dedicated to
all of these dedicated citizens who want to change things
- and change them for good.
Le 9e Forum Mondial Convergences, qui aura lieu à Paris du 5 au
7 septembre 2016, est ainsi dédié à tous ces citoyens engagés, qui
veulent changer les choses – et les changent concrètement.
During the three days more than 7000 participants
from all over the world will share their experiences, expertise and practices. The chosen theme for this year’s
forum, “Inventing tomorrow’s sustainable cities and
territories”, fully formulates our collective ambition. It is
through such exchanges, open to all, that our cities, full
of different possibilities, will pave the way to a freer and
more fraternal world.
Durant trois jours, plus de 7000 participants venus du monde
entier viendront échanger leurs expériences, partager leurs expertises
et mutualiser leurs pratiques. Le thème retenu pour cette nouvelle
édition, « Réussir la transition vers des villes et territoires durables »,
formule pleinement notre ambition collective. C’est au travers de
telles rencontres, ouvertes à toutes et à tous, que nos villes, riches de
nombreux possibles, engendreront un monde plus libre et fraternel.

Presentation
Convergences is the first platform for thought in Europe that aims at building new
convergences between public, private, and solidarity-based actors to promote the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the development of a “Zero Exclusion,
Zero Carbon, Zero Poverty” world. Convergences aims at provoking and fostering
reflection and action, sharing best practices and encouraging partnerships and
innovative solutions. Our scope of interest is wide ranging: sustainable development,
international development, solidarity-based and inclusive finance, Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR), social entrepreneurship, social and solidarity economy, and
new technologies for change.
Since its launch in 2008, the Convergences World Forum has become a key
event for experts and decision-makers who come to learn, network, and mobilise for
a more sustainable world. Gathering more than 7,000 attendees from all over the
world in Paris every year, the World Forum is the culmination of Convergences’ work.
In addition to the World Forum, Convergences works with more than 240 partner
organisations represented within its Working Groups to publish the Microfinance and
Social Entrepreneurship Barometers, and to organise gatherings throughout the year,
such as the 100% Lab Laboo Cafés and the Youth We Can! meetings.
Convergences est une plateforme unique de réflexion, de plaidoyer et de mobilisation
en Europe rassemblant des acteurs publics, privés et solidaires autour des Objectifs du
développement durable pour construire un monde « Zéro exclusion, Zéro carbone, Zéro
pauvreté ». Sa mission est de susciter la réflexion et l’action, diffuser des bonnes pratiques
et favoriser la co-construction de partenariats innovants à fort impact sociétal.
Convergences travaille dans tous les domaines pouvant déclencher un effet décisif en
faveur de ses objectifs : développement durable, solidarité internationale pour le
développement, finance solidaire et inclusive, Responsabilité Sociétale des Entreprises
(RSE), entrepreneuriat social, économie sociale et solidaire et nouvelles technologies pour
le développement.
Depuis son lancement en 2008, le Forum Mondial Convergences est devenu un
événement incontournable pour les experts et décideurs. Le Forum offre un espace
d’apprentissage, de rencontres et de mobilisation pour construire un monde plus durable.
Rassemblant plus de 7000 participants du monde entier à Paris chaque année, le Forum
Mondial est le point d’orgue des activités de Convergences. En marge du Forum,
Convergences travaille avec plus de 240 organisations partenaires rassemblées dans ses
Groupes de Travail pour produire les Baromètres de la Microfinance et de l’Entrepreneuriat
Social et organiser des rendez-vous réguliers tels que les cafés 100% Lab Laboo, les
rencontres Youth We Can!

Design for peace
Palais Brongniart I Professional Marketplace - Salon Professionnel
Initiated by the Afrika Tiss association, Design for Peace is a project
aimed at helping to promote the development of a textile and handicraft sector in Africa, that is environmentally friendly. Design for Peace
aspires to offer local artisans and craftsmen, as well as refugees, the
opportunity to collaborate with Parisian designers in order to explore
new techniques and develop collections crossing different fields of
expertise. The goal is to inspire multicultural and innovative designs,
which at the same time take into account both the requirements and
the standards of the international market.
Design for Peace est un projet porté par Afrika Tiss, association dont la
mission est de favoriser et promouvoir le développement de filières
textiles et artisanales respectueuses de l’homme et de l’environnement en Afrique. Le projet Design For Peace consiste à proposer à des
artisans locaux et réfugiés une collaboration avec des designers parisiens, afin d’expérimenter de nouvelles techniques et de mettre au

Launched in 2015, ‘‘Paléo-énergétique’’ is a research-based programme that aims to bring attention to old inventions related to energy,
transportation, heating and electricity that had been ignored or forgotten to inspire future innovations. Relying on a multi-disciplinary
community, the programme identifies old inventions and later displays
them through an interactive timeline exhibition on their online platform.
Lancé en 2015, « Paléo-énergétique » est un programme de recherche
citoyen et participatif qui vise à exhumer d’anciennes inventions du
domaine de l’énergie, pour mieux innover demain. Reposant sur une
communauté pluridisciplinaire, cette recherche est constituée d’une
plateforme web et d’une exposition interactive présentant ces innovations sur une frise chronologique.

Climate change is becoming increasingly central in the territorial changes
and land management debates, particularly when it comes to the management of urban areas. Cities are turning to reduce their environmental
footprint and working on improving the environmental conditions of urban
life. This exhibition aims to discuss the relationship between climate
change and cities in countries of the Mediterranean area, as well as shed
light on the questions we have to answer in the very near future.
Le changement climatique est un problème d’actualité de plus en plus
central dans les débats sur les transformations et la gestion des territoires, en particulier urbains. Les villes se transforment pour réduire
leur empreinte écologique et tentent d’améliorer les conditions environnementales de vie urbaine. Cette exposition a pour but de donner
des éléments de repère sur les relations entre climat et villes dans
l’espace méditerranéen et poser les questions auxquelles nous aurons

“Talent in Exile, refugees in Paris” is a photo exhibition created by photographer Benjamin Loyseau and Action Emploi Réfugiés (AERé) in
partnership with the City of Paris and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The exhibition is composed of 20 portraits
of refugees who arrived in France over recent years and who have either
found jobs or vocational training in Paris. AERé invites all guests at the
Forum to take another look at refugees, one that goes beyond figures and
dramas. An invitation to look beyond clichés and to get to know the faces
and talents of these women and men who came to France looking for a
fresh start.

‘‘¿Cómo el mundo imagino en 2025?’’, an art contest for kids, that was
launched in several schools in Mexico City on the occasion of the Paris
Climate Conference (COP 21), is now the subject of an exhibition. This
awareness campaign goes in tandem with AFD’s activities, which support
Mexico in implementing its environmental protection policy and fight climate change. Students from eight participating kindergarten and primary
schools received awards for their drawings. The awards ceremony took
place in the presence of children and teachers who participated in the
contest, as well as Jean-Marc Liger, Director of AFD in Mexico, and Dr.
Francisco Barnes, Executive Director of the Centre Mario Molina.
Le concours de dessins d’enfants « ¿Cómo imagino el mundo en 2025? »
lancé dans plusieurs écoles de la ville de Mexico à l’occasion de la Conférence de Paris sur le climat (COP 21), fait aujourd’hui l’objet d’une exposition. Cette opération de sensibilisation auprès des enfants s’inscrit pleinement dans l’activité de l’AFD qui accompagne le Mexique dans sa politique
de protection de l’environnement et de lutte contre le changement climatique. Des élèves de maternelle et primaire de huit écoles participantes ont
reçu des prix pour leurs dessins. La cérémonie de remise des Prix s’est

Utopian Seed Project by Kevin Abosch

The seed implies a first step towards something greater. A seed is not just an obvious metaphor for what gives
birth to innovation; seeds of plants are essential when considering the planning of future cities. With his “Utopian
Seed Project”, Abosch examines the power of seeds to feed, clothe, house, protect us and meet our aesthetic
needs. Abosch suggests that we become “seed-centric” and use seeds to work towards something that by definition is unattainable... Utopia. Abosch will present an installation comprised of 1,000 vacuum-packed “Utopian Propagation Provisions” and a 3 square meter mixed media tapestry.

How to get back to freedom after having been denied of it and what
means to be free? How does one apprehends time, the future, love
or relationships with others after several months or years behind the
bars? What is the meaning of the word rehabilitation for the ones
directly affected? Is it possible to rebuild after experiencing the
ordeal of incarceration and prison life? Can we escape the reasons
that led us to jail? Can we rebuild life after prison?
Nestled deep in a valley of Picardy, a single farm in France welcomes prisoners spending the end of their sentence outside of jail. A
singular integration structure that provides them with housing,
work, social support and a rich and demanding community life.
Surrounded by staff and volunteers, these men try to reconstruct
and rebuild a true «life project».
‘‘À l’air libre / In the open” is certainly a movie about getting out of
prison. But it is also, and probably more than everything else, a
movie about prison. A prison that you can not see but is omnipresent. A prison from which we are constantly measuring the traces
and from which it seems so difficult to break.
Comment revient-on à la liberté après en avoir été privé et que
signifie être libre ? Comment appréhende-t-on le temps, l’avenir,
l’amour ou la relation aux autres après avoir passé plusieurs mois
ou plusieurs années derrière des murs ? Quel sens prend le mot
réinsertion pour les personnes les plus directement concernées ?
Est-il possible de reconstruire après avoir vécu l’épreuve de l’enfermement et de la vie carcérale ? Peut-on échapper aux raisons
qui nous ont conduit en prison ? Peut-on refaire sa vie après la
prison ?
Nichée au fond d’une vallée picarde, une ferme unique en France
accueille des détenus en fin de peine, sous le régime du placement extérieur. Une structure d’insertion singulière qui leur propose un logement, un travail, un accompagnement social et une
vie communautaire riche et exigeante. Entourés de salariés et
bénévoles, ces hommes tentent de se reconstruire et de rebâtir un
véritable « projet de vie ».

Presentation of the ‘‘Poverty in a rising Africa’’ report by the World Bank
Have two decades of unprecedented growth sufficed to put Africa
on a path to zero poverty by 2030? Scrutiny of the available data
suggests that poverty may have come down more than commonly
estimated, but that more Africans are living in extreme poverty today than in 1990, due to population growth. The human development challenge remains enormous despite substantial progress.
The inequality picture is mixed. Acceleration of Africa’s poverty
reduction is called for. These stakes and challenges will be
addressed in this session, where the participants will have the opportunity to exchange with one of the authors of the World Bank’s
“Poverty in a rising Africa” report.

Deux décennies de croissance sans précédent ont-elles suffi à
mettre l’Afrique sur la voie du Zéro Pauvreté d’ici 2030 ? Une
analyse approfondie des données disponibles suggère que la
baisse du niveau de pauvreté est supérieure aux prévisions. Cependant, en raison de la croissance démographique, le nombre
d’Africains victimes d’une pauvreté extrême est plus élevé aujourd’hui qu’en 1990. Le défi du développement humain reste
énorme en dépit des progrès conséquents. L’inégalité revêt une
réalité plurielle. Il est urgent d’accélérer les efforts de réduction
de la pauvreté en Afrique. Ces enjeux et défis seront abordés dans
cette session, où les participants auront l’occasion d’échanger
avec l’un des auteurs du rapport « Poverty in a rising Africa » de la
Banque Mondiale.

Every year since 2010, Convergences has been publishing the
Microfinance Barometer, a publication that aims at showcasing the
global trends and best practices of the sector in France and worldwide. The 7th Barometer, published in partnership with the Fédération Nationale des Caisses d’Epargne (FNCE), the Caisse des
Dépôts Group (CDC), the European Microfinance Platform (e-MFP),
Oikocredit and the MasterCard Foundation, casts light on the role
and impact of the microfinance sector in the implementation of the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This launching event of
the English version of the Barometer will be an opportunity to debate around the challenges and leverages of the sector with the
partners and authors of one of Convergences’ leading publications.
Depuis 2010, Convergences publie chaque année le Baromètre
de la Microfinance qui retrace les principales tendances et meilleures pratiques du secteur en France et à l’international. Cette 7e
édition, réalisée en partenariat avec la Fédération Nationale des
Caisses d’Epargne (FNCE), le Groupe Caisse des Dépôts (CDC), la
European Microfinance Platform (e-MFP), Oikocredit et la Fondation MasterCard, met en lumière le rôle et l’impact du secteur de
la microfinance dans la mise en œuvre des Objectifs de développement durable. Le lancement du Baromètre en anglais sera l’occasion de débattre autour des défis et des leviers de la microfinance avec les partenaires et les auteurs de la 7e édition de l’une
des publications phares de Convergences.

After their first MOOC, “Partnerships that change the world”, ESSEC
and Le Rameau launch exclusively during the 2016 Convergences
World Forum a new MOOC, “Alliances that change territories”.
Territories are faced with major economic and social challenges
that no single actor can address alone. This MOOC demonstrates
the powerful potential of multi-actor alliances that can build innovative solutions together for the common good.
Après le premier MOOC « Les partenariats qui changent le
monde », L’ESSEC et Le RAMEAU lancent en exclusivité lors du
Forum Mondial Convergences 2016 le MOOC « Les alliances qui
changent les territoires ».
Les territoires sont en effet confrontés à des enjeux économiques,
sociaux et sociétaux majeurs, auxquels aucun acteur ne peut plus
répondre seul. Face à ces défis, ce MOOC présente la puissance
et le potentiel des alliances multi-acteurs, qui, ensemble, peuvent
construire des solutions innovantes au service du bien commun.

Bangladesh, also called the ‘‘country of crazy rivers’’, has approximately 155 million inhabitants for a territory four times smaller
than France, making it the most densely populated country in the
world. Chronic floods and cyclones affect the country almost every year. And these phenomena have intensified over the last fifteen years, largely because of global warming.
According to scientists, almost 20% of the country could be engulfed, before 2050, the subsequent rising water from melting
glaciers. Bangladesh would count more than 20 million climate
refugees!
Yann Arthus-Bertrand, photographer, film director and ecologist,
invites us to follow the daily life of Yves Marre and Runa Khan in
a documentary showing both the impact of climate change “here
and now” on the populations of Bangladesh and the work undertaken by the NGO, Friendship to help the most affected of these
populations adapt to changes which they are powerless to control
and for which they are not responsible in any way.
Le Bangladesh, aussi appelé le « pays des fleuves fous », compte
environ 155 millions d’habitants pour un territoire quatre fois plus
petit que la France, ce qui en fait le pays le plus densément peuplé
du Monde. Les inondations chroniques et les cyclones affectent le
pays pratiquement tous les ans. Et ces phénomènes se sont accentués depuis une quinzaine d’années, en grande partie à cause du
réchauffement climatique.
Selon les scientifiques, quasiment 20 % du pays pourrait être englouti, avant 2050, par la montée des eaux consécutive à la fonte
des glaciers. Le Bangladesh compterait alors plus de 20 millions
de réfugiés climatiques !
Yann Arthus-Bertrand, photographe, réalisateur et écologiste, nous
propose de suivre le quotidien d’Yves Marre et Runa Khan dans un
documentaire montrant à la fois l’impact du changement climatique « ici et maintenant » sur les populations du Bangladesh et le
travail qu’entreprend l’ONG Friendship pour aider les populations
les plus affectées à s’adapter à des changements qu’ils sont impuissants à maîtriser et dont ils ne sont responsables en rien.

5th Convergences Awards
5e Prix Convergences
The Convergences Awards reward every year since 2011 projects
that are initiated by public, private and solidary partnerships
seeking to build a fair and sustainable world. The Convergences
Awards have two main categories:
1. The European Award which rewards a project whose beneficiaries are mostly based within the European Union.
2. The International Award which rewards a project whose beneficiaries are mostly based outside the European Union.
In 2016, the jury had the possibility to reward a Special “Sustainable cities and territories” Award for a project which is innovative and relevant to the theme of development of sustainable cities and territories.

Les Prix Convergences récompensent chaque année depuis 2011
des partenariats public-privé-solidaire particulièrement innovants.
Les Prix Convergences sont ouverts aux projets portés par une
entité solidaire en partenariat avec une entité publique et/ou une
entité privée. Ils doivent démontrer un fort impact social et/ou
environnemental et avoir un caractère innovant et réplicable.
Ils comportent 2 catégories :
1. Le Prix Europe, récompensant un partenariat mettant en
place un projet dont les bénéficiaires sont majoritairement
situés sur le territoire des pays de l’Union européenne.
2. Le Prix International, récompensant un partenariat mettant en
place un projet dont les bénéficiaires sont majoritairement situés en dehors du territoire des pays de l’Union européenne.
Cette année, le Jury a eu la possibilité d’attribuer un Prix spécial
« Villes et territoires durables » à un projet particulièrement pertinent et innovant en matière de développement des villes et des
territoires de façon durable.

Depuis 1993, l’association de solidarité internationale ACTED
répond aux besoins humanitaires des populations dans les situations de crise et assure le respect de leur dignité, tout en favorisant

Agence Française de Développement (AFD), a public financial
institution that implements the policy defined by the French Government, works to combat poverty and promote sustainable development. AFD operates on four continents via a network of 75 offices and finances and supports projects that improve living
conditions for populations, boost economic growth and protect the
planet. In 2015, AFD earmarked EUR 8.3bn to finance projects in
developing countries and for overseas France.
The Crédit Coopératif Group aims to finance ‘social economy’
