setting retarder
VZ2 SETTING RETARDER PROPERTIES VZ 2 slows down the reaction between cement and water, which weakens the frictional forces between the cement and the aggregates. Depending on the quantity of VZ 2 used, the workability time can be changed as required. The release of heat is slower, reducing the risk of temperature-related cracking. The plasticising effect makes the concrete easier to work and produces waterproof concrete with a very compact structure. The improved structure and retardant effect increase the final strength. The concrete containing the retarder weeps for a long period and shrinkage should be monitored to avoid any cracking. APPLICATIONS Restart joints caused by voluntary or involuntary interruptions can be avoided. The concrete can still be worked and compacted for an extended time after pouring. VZ 2 is particularly suitable for the fabrication of large items, for concrete transported over long distances and for concreting work in hot weather. When using concrete containing the retarder, it is advisable to ensure the availability on the site of machinery for subsequently compacting the surface (vibrators and spreaders), in order that any shrinkage cracking can be eliminated as soon as it occurs. CHARACTERISTICS Appearance Solubility Density Chlorine ion content Storage Pale red liquid Soluble in water 1.13 kg/dm³ < 0.1% Protect from frost, sunlight and contamination. In the case of bulk deliveries, it is essential to use clean, empty containers. CONCENTRATION Range of effectiveness depending on the retardant effect required: 2.0 – 7.0 ml per kg of cement i.e. approximately 0.2 - 0.7 % of weight of cement Under normal conditions, 1 ml of VZ 2 in 1 kg of cement retards setting by one hour. If Portland or blast-furnace cement is used, the concentration can be reduced. If quick-setting cement is employed, the concentration should be increased by 0.3 litres per 100 kg of cement. UTILISATION The VZ 2 setting retarder should be diluted in the mixing water or incorporated into concrete which has already been mixed. The retarder must not be added to a dry mixture. VZ 2 is suitable for use with CPA CEMI 52.5 PMES CP 2 CPJ CEM II B 32.5 R cements. This wide range of cement types makes it necessary to carry out suitability testing in order to verify effectiveness. Do not use with high-alumina cement. At high concentrations and high concrete temperatures, side-effects may occur with certain cements (reverse reaction). The plasticising effect disappears after a certain length of time. After prolonged storage, the product may become pale or brown if it comes into contact with steel. This has no influence on product performance. After an extended period of storage, VZ 2 should be shaken before use. Monitoring: VZ 2 is subject to strict quality control during manufacture. The product and its manufacturing process are inspected by FMPA Bauwesen, Otto-GrafInstitut, Stuttgart.
