Webinar – Transitioning to Adulthood: Employment Strategies and Life Skills for Teens and Young Adults with ASD Thursday, May 28th, 2015 from 12:00pm – 1:00pm Description: This webinar will feature both Sarah Duhaime and Patricia O’Connor. Sarah will share practical strategies geared to adolescents and young adults with high functioning ASD and preparing for summer employment or volunteer work including: how to get started on identifying skills/ interests, resume/interview tips, establishing regular routines, and where to job search. Sarah will also describe common and creative workplace accommodations. Patricia will share information about the Transition To Life Program she has developed, which provides young adults with ASD direct training, coaching support, as well as the social engagement necessary to reach their potential and become contributing members of society. This program has demonstrated that youth and young adults with ASD can achieve meaningful employment, purposeful lifestyles and find a community of acceptance. Presenters: Sarah Duhaime, MSW, RSW is an Employment and Life Skills Coach at The Redpath Centre, and a Child Development Team Social Worker at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. Patricia O’Connor has had a lifelong interest in assisting individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). A desire to teach, along with her brother’s diagnosis of Autism, helped her develop a keen interest and awareness in the field of special education leading to a Master’s Degree in Education, in the area of Special Education. Sarah nous fera part de stratégies concrètes à utiliser avec les adolescents et les jeunes adultes ayant reçu un diagnostic de TSA de haut niveau, afin de les préparer à occuper un emploi d’été ou à faire du bénévolat. Elle abordera notamment les sujets suivants : commencer par déterminer leurs habiletés et leurs intérêts; conseils pour rédiger un curriculum vitae et se préparer à une entrevue, établissement de routines régulières et où chercher un emploi. Sarah nous décrira aussi des adaptations ingénieuses souvent consenties en milieu de travail pour les personnes autistes. Patricia nous renseignera sur le programme « Transition To Life », qu’elle a elle-même conçu et qui consiste à offrir aux jeunes adultes TSA une formation directe, un encadrement ainsi que l’engagement social nécessaire pour les aider à réaliser leur potentiel et à devenir des membres productifs et utiles de la société. Ce programme a montré que les adolescents et les jeunes adultes autistes peuvent occuper un emploi intéressant, adopter des modes de vie axés sur l’atteinte d’objectifs louables et devenir membre à part entière d’une collectivité. Présentatrices Sarah Duhaime, MServSoc, TSI, est coach de préparation à la vie autonome et à l’emploi au Redpath Centre et membre de l’équipe des travailleurs sociaux, du secteur « développement de l’enfant » au Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. Patricia O’Connor s’intéresse depuis toujours au trouble du spectre de l’autisme (TSA). Son penchant pour l’enseignement, conjugué au diagnostic d’autisme qu’a reçu son frère, a contribué à développer chez elle un vif intérêt pour le domaine de l’éducation de l’enfance en difficulté. Elle est d’ailleurs détentrice d’une maîtrise en Éducation (Éducation de l’enfance en difficulté).
