Word endings "er", "é", "ée" and "ez" are all pronounced with the same final
vowel sound, for example : "il va parler, il a parlé, la langue parlée, vous
parlez".

You may notice that the final word (parlé) is pronounced the same way in all
cases.That "é" vowel has no real equivalent in English.

The General Practitioner
'Hello Sir. How can I help you?''Hello Doctor. I am English and I am here with my friends for a day
trip, by boat. Unfortunately, we are ill.'
'We have some medical problems. I believe that there are reciprocal arrangements for medical care
between our two countries. Can you help us?'
'Of course. I can try. I am a general practitioner. It will cost you 23 Euros for each consultation. I
need to diagnose your illnesses. But first of all, do you have your European Health Insurance Cards,
because if you do have them you can be reimbursed later.'
'I will give you a treatment form - a sickness form - that you must keep and then you will be
reimbursed when you return to the United Kingdom. I am also going to give you prescriptions that
you must give to the pharmacist.'
'When you return to the UK you can get back about 70% of my fees and between 35% and 65% of
the cost of most of the prescribed medicines. The cost to my regular patients is reduced to 6 Euros
60.'
'I can see that some of you are a bit deaf and that others can't see very well and there is a lot of
arthritis and some breathing problems. So, I am going to take your blood pressure; I would like to
know if you have high blood pressure. I am going to examine everyone with the help of an X ray, an
ultrasound and a scan.'
Later. 'Well, it seems that Mrs Green has injured her shoulder. Her shoulder is dislocated but it isn't
broken and it isn't serious. Mr Smith has a broken rib. Mr Brown has a black eye and a broken nose.
Evidently he has been in a fight! Mrs Black only has a sprained ankle. But all these injuries can be
treated.'
'I would like to say that given your ages, you seem to be a group of people in good health, so I
presume that you have a good life style with a good diet and plenty of exercise (mental and physical)
and that you will continue like that and that perhaps you will pay me a visit again next year.'
'There is only one thing that I don't understand, taking account of your ages. There are three ladies
who are pregnant!'
