MELANCHOLY
NL Nooit was melancholie
zo openlijk aanwezig als in
het 17de-eeuwse Engeland.
Centraal in dit programma
staat een reeks van zeven
Lachrimae. Smartelijke
tranen die John Dowland tot
smachtende pavanes stileerde. Ze vormen het startpunt
van een eigenzinnige tocht
die via sombere barokpartituren van Dowland, Muffat
en Purcell tot de twintigste
eeuw voert met Hindemiths
Trauermusik en Brittens
Lachrymae. Tegen deze
muzikale achtergrond creëert
de Belgische kunstenares
Anouk De Clercq een nieuwe
video-installatie waarin
verstilling en uitgerekte tijd
centraal staan.

FR La mélancolie n’a jamais
été aussi ouvertement
présente que dans l’Angleterre du XVIIème siècle. Sept
Lachrimae – douloureuses
larmes transformées en languissantes pavanes par John
Dowland – forment le point
de départ d’un programme
traversant les époques, des
partitions obscures et baroques de Dowland, Muffat et
Purcell aux œuvres du XXème
siècle, la Trauermusik d’Hindemith et les Lachrymae
de Britten. Le concert sera
accompagné d’une nouvelle
installation vidéo de l’artiste
belge Anouk De Clercq centrée sur le temps suspendu et
distendu.

EN English music by composers
such as Dowland and Purcell
was a constant source of inspiration for Britten throughout
his life. What Britten admired
in Dowland was his ability
to descend into an abyss of
suffering with his music and
there, amid the bittersweet
melancholy, allow a glimmer
of joy to be heard. B’Rock
performs Reflections on a song
of Dowland along with Paul
Hindemith’s Trauermusik,
written in 1936 on the occasion of the death of England’s
King George V. Inspired by
these musical compositions
and connections, the Belgian
artist Anouk De Clercq has
created a new video installation in which silence and
stretched-out time are central
themes.

NL Barokorkest B’Rock ging
met hun Mozart Project de
uitdaging aan om alle symfonieën van Mozart verspreid
over enkele jaren uit te
voeren. Na een succesvolle
tournee met pianist Alexander Melnikov tijdens het
vorig seizoen, is het orkest
toe aan het tweede luik van
het project. Opnieuw wordt
daarbij de hulp ingeroepen
van een talentvolle topmusicus: de Zwitserse cellist
Christian Poltéra. De gevierde contratenor Bejun Mehta
maakt met dit programma
zijn wereldwijd debuut als
dirigent. Hij leidt B’Rock
onder andere door Mozarts
29e Symfonie en Haydns 44e
Symfonie, beter bekend als
zijn Trauer Symphonie.
FR Dans le cadre de leur
Projet Mozart, l’orchestre
baroque B’Rock s’était mis
au défi de jouer en quelques
années l’ensemble des symphonies de Mozart. Après
une tournée particulièrement
réussie la saison passée avec
le pianiste Alexander Melnikov, l’orchestre s’attaque
au deuxième volet du projet.
À nouveau, il fait appel à
un jeune musicien réputé :
le violoncelliste Christian
Poltéra. Pour la première fois
à la baguette, le contre-ténor acclamé Bejun Mehta
fera ses débuts comme chef
d’orchestre. Il dirigera la
29ème symphonie de Mozart
et la 44ème symphonie de
Haydn, qui doit son surnom
Trauer au caractère doux
et introspectif du troisième
mouvement.

Once again, they will be calling on a top young musician
to lend a hand: the muchpraised cellist Christian
Poltéra, whose ‘effortless
playing’ was remarked on by
Gramophone Magazine. The
celebrated countertenor Bejun Mehta will be making his
worldwide conducting debut
with this richly contrasting
programme. He will be leading B’Rock through Mozart’s
29th Symphony and Haydn’s
Trauer Symphonie.

Purcells beroemde semi-opera in vijf bedrijven verenigt
theater, dans en opera om een
eerbetoon te brengen aan de
liefde en het vaderland. Het
oorspronkelijke libretto van de
Engelse dichter John Dryden
verhaalt de queeste van koning
Arthur om zijn verloofde te
bevrijden uit de greep van zijn
gezworen vijand, de Saksische
koning Oswald. Peter Verhelst,
de gelauwerde Belgische
romanschrijver en dichter,
moderniseerde deze vurige
oorlogslegende. Voortgestuwd
door de muzikale energie van
B’Rock, doet deze eigentijdse
bewerking zonder enige twijfel
de politieke draagwijdte en
theatrale kracht van dit meesterwerk herleven.
FR Le célèbre « semi-opéra »
d’Henry Purcell en 5 actes,
King Arthur, rassemble
théâtre, danse et opéra au
sein d’une même œuvre en
hommage à l’amour et à la
patrie. Le libretto d’origine du poète anglais John
Dryden raconte la quête
du roi Arthur, parti libérer
sa bien-aimée des griffes
de son ennemi juré, le roi
saxon Oswald. Le Belge
Peter Verhelst, romancier et
poète à succès, a fait de cette
légende de guerre passionnelle une version moderne,
en retravaillant les dialogues.
Portée par l’énergie musicale
de B’Rock, il ne fait aucun
doute que cette adaptation
moderne ressuscite la portée
politique et la force théâtrale
de ce chef-d’œuvre.

its way, and nationalism to be
praised in an exalted form.
The original libretto by the
English poet John Dryden
describes the quest of King
Arthur to free his fiancée
from the grip of his sworn enemy, the Saxon King Oswald.
Peter Verhelst, the celebrated
Belgian novelist and poet,
has modernised this fiery war
legend and has re-written the
spoken dialogue. Guided by
B’Rock’s musical energy, the
political scope and theatrical
force of Purcell’s masterpiece
will surely revive in its modern reproduction.
