Hortus Artium Medievalium is the
annual journal of the International
Research Center for Late Antiquity
and Middle Ages (Motovun, Croatia),
established in 1993. The journal has a
particular interest in studying artefacts
for the history of art, and to study the
period from Late Antiquity to the end
of the Gothic period in diachronic
fashion. An annual colloquium gathers
appropriate specialists, from which
the papers are drawn.
Hortus Artium Medievalium est la
revue annuelle du Centre de Recherche
International pour l’Antiquité Tardive
et le Moyen Âge (Motovun, Croatie),
créé en 1993. La revue est consacrée
en particulier à l’étude d’objets d’art
dans l’histoire de l’art, et à l’étude
de la période de l’Antiquité Tardive
à la fin de l’époque gothique, dans un
esprit interdisciplinaire, international
et diachronique. Un colloque annuel
réunit des spécialistes compétents,

The archaeology of the Middle Ages and the Modern Period in the Low
Countries is flourishing more than ever. This new effort produces a wealth
of evidence, new interpretations and interesting perspectives on themes of
international interest, such as rural development, the rise of the town, material
culture and European expansion overseas. The initiative was taken to create a new
international journal on the archaeology of the Middle Ages and Modern Period in
the Low Countries (Belgium and the Netherlands). The journal contains reflexive,
interpretative and synthesizing articles as well as publications of important datasets
and a review section. Contributions in English, French and German are accepted
and the journal is also open to foreign authors. We do not consider archaeology
as a closed field of its own, contributions from historians, historical-geographers,
numismatists, place-name specialists, architectural historians etc. are welcome as
well if related topics are dealt with.
L’archéologie du Moyen-Âge et de la Période Moderne tient un rôle de plus en
plus important aux Pays-Bas et en Belgique. Ce nouvel élan permet de publier de
nouvelles interprétations et des perspectives intéressantes sur des thèmes comme
le développement rural et urbain, la culture matérielle et l’expansion européenne
à l’étranger. Cette initiative a été mise en place afin de créer un nouveau journal
international sur l’archéologie du Moyen-Âge et de la Période Moderne dans la
région des Pays-Bas (Belgique et Hollande). La revue contient des articles de
réflexion, d’interprétation et de synthèse, ainsi que des publications de données
importantes et une section de comptes rendus. Tous les articles en anglais, en
français et en allemand sont acceptés, et la revue est aussi ouverte aux auteurs
étrangers. En outre, l’archéologie n’est pas considérée comme un secteur fermé.
Les articles des historiens, des géographes historiques, des numismates, des
toponymistes, des historiens architecturaux,…sont les bienvenus tout comme les
écrits sur des thèmes annexes.

by someone from a passing ship. As we have noted
and shall see again below, certain parcels of it were
most likely brought from far afield, but the owner
had evidently been buying and/or selling in the locality shortly before the hoard’s deposition. Because of
their rarity and local character it is also likely that
these are among the most recently acquired coins in
the hoard, and this is consistent with the suggestion,
made elsewhere, that production of these coinages
at Dinant and Namur began only after the introduction of the type with the mint-name in field, in
the 850s.85

This new periodical will restart and continue the renowned Seminarium Kondakovianum,
the journal of the institute founded in memory of Nikodim Kondakov in 1927, which
represented the desire to maintain and deepen Kondakov’s pioneering scholarly work in
Byzantine and medieval studies, celebrated not only in the Russian and Czech worlds but
also in western Europe.
Convivium will cover an extended chronological range, from the Early Christian
period until the end of the Middle Ages, which in central Europe lasted well beyond the
Renaissance in Italy. Equally vast is the
range of subjects it will treat. Whereas its
central concern will remain art history,
that is, whatever pertains to images, monuments, the forms of visual and aesthetic

experience, it will also include many disciplines tied to art history in the deepest
sense: anthropology, liturgy, archaeology, historiography and, obviously, history itself. The goal is to ensure that the
journal will provide a 360º opening onto
the field and the research methods being
deployed in it.

IKON promotes a wide range of contents and themes of
iconographic studies, focusing on the role and function of
“image” within the period and place of its origin as well as
its contemporary reception and discernment. The journal
seeks to present different perspectives in understanding and
interpreting images incorporating cross-disciplinary studies
and recent results in other complementary disciplines. IKON
is an annual publication published by the Faculty of Arts and
Sciences at the University of Rijeka.

sur son lieu d’origine ainsi que son acceptation et son discernement contemporains. Le journal a pour dessein de

This international journal is the publication of the « Association
for Late Antiquity » which was founded in Lyon to prepare for the
International Congress of Christian Archaeology held there in 1986.
The Association’s journal aims at enriching the study of written
texts from the fourth to the seventh centuries by setting these into a
wider context using a multidisciplinary approach covering history,
archaeology, epigraphy, law and philology.

ejemplos de esta evolución. Fue erigido entre mediados
del siglo V e inicios del siglo VI y comprendía un
palacio episcopal y dos iglesias de tres naves, la inferior
conectada con un edi¿cio funerario de planta central, la
actual iglesia de Sant Miquel105, que presenta un cimborrio
central sostenido por ocho columnas con fustes y capiteles
reaprovechados (¿J): cuatro capiteles idénticos, dos de
columna y dos de pilastra, que pertenecen al siglo III; dos
capiteles del siglo V que imitan los ejemplares anteriores
con el objeto de mantener una unidad estilística106, y dos
capiteles del siglo VII, quizás añadidos en el transcurso de
alguna reforma de este edi¿cio, completamente diversos a
los anteriores107. Los capiteles de pilastra y los ejemplares
del siglo VII se sitúan en los cuatro ángulos, encima de
fustes de granito cuyo diámetro excede en mucho el de los
capiteles, los ejemplares de columna del siglo III se sitúan
en el eje norte-sur, sobre fustes de mármol grisáceo, y sus
correspondientes imitaciones del siglo V se sitúan en el
eje este-oeste, sobre fustes de mármol blanco.

La Chronique d’Égypte est publiée
annuellement, depuis 1925 et sans
interruption, par l’Association Égyptologique Reine Élisabeth (anciennement Fondation Égyptologique
Reine Élisabeth) avec le concours
du Ministère de l’Éducation, de la
recherche et de la formation de la
Communauté Française et de la Fondation Universitaire de Belgique.
Conçue au départ comme un bulletin d’information, elle est devenue
assez rapidement une revue scientifique internationale. À côté d’articles couvrant les divers domaines (philologie,
histoire, archéologie, histoire de l’art) de l’égyptologie, de la papyrologie et de la coptologie,
elle contient aussi des comptes rendus critiques
d’ouvrages récemment parus. Dues à des spécialistes de diverses nationalités, les contributions
sont rédigées en français, en anglais ou en allemand. La revue compte annuellement environ
400 pages (deux fascicules de 200 pages ou un
fascicule double de 400 pages).

The Chronique d’Égypte has been published annually every year since
1925 by the Association Égyptologique Reine Élisabeth (formerly
the Fondation Égyptologique Reine Élisabeth) sponsored by the
Ministry of Education and the Fondation Universitaire de Belgique.
It was originally a newsletter but rapidly became an international
scientific journal. In addition to articles on various aspects of Egyptology,
papyrology and coptology (philology, history, archaeology and history
of art), it also contains critical reviews of recently published books. The
articles are written by experts of various nationalities and are in French,
English or German.

Les ostraca publiés dans cette deuxième livraison des Documents�démotiques�
de� Strasbourg� (1)� ont été achetés par W. Spiegelberg dans la région thébaine,
lors de ses deux voyages accomplis en 1895-96 (DDS� II 2-4) et en 1898-99
(DDS�II 5) (2). La première expédition fut l’occasion de découvrir les opportunités d’acquisition offertes par le marché local des antiquités, tandis que la
seconde fut organisée à dessein pour mener, en compagnie de R. Reitzenstein,
une vaste opération d’achats au moyen d’un financement exceptionnel et grâce
aux contacts établis avec des vendeurs « arabes et grecs » (3). Les pièces DDS�II
2-4, vraisemblablement acquises ensemble, constituent un dossier cohérent
autour d’une même affaire. Il semble donc que la chaîne d’acheminement depuis
le contexte d’enfouissement jusqu’à l’inventoriage muséologique (abandon des
documents dans un environnement commun, perturbations taphonomiques éventuelles, découverte dans des conditions clandestines, dispersion sur le marché
des antiquités, achat et transfert dans les collections scientifiques de la Kaiser
Wilhelms Universität) n’a jamais totalement rompu l’assemblage archéologique.
Rien ne permet, en revanche, d’établir formellement un lien direct entre ce dossier et DDS�II 5, acquis trois ans plus tard. Mais les indices prosopographiques
(en particulier la mention commune de Pétéharsemtheus fils de Pakoibis et de
Nékhoutès fils d’Onnôphris) et le contexte économique peut-être analogue suggèrent que ces documents proviennent du même environnement pathyrite.

The journal mainly focuses on the preIslamic and early Islamic art and archaeology of Inner Asia, as well as its languages, religions and history.

avant notre ère au IXe siècle de notre ère. La revue se veut aussi un espace pour
caractériser les interactions (relations, influences et distinctions) entre le rabbinisme, le christianisme et les débuts de l’islam. La revue entend donc couvrir un
large spectre sans exclusive et recevoir des contributions non seulement en français
mais aussi en allemand, en anglais et en italien qui sont ses langues de publication. C’est de plus l’unique revue internationale dans la recherche francophone
qui couvre ce que l’on appelle le judaïme ancien, et qui veut avoir une orientation
spécifiquement historique et philologique.
The journal is both historical and philological with the intention of being interdisciplinary. It focuses on literature, archaeology and epigraphy, culture, religion
and sociology. It intends to cover the period spanning between the 6th century
BCE and the 9th century CE. The journal is to be a milieu in which to characterize
the interactions (relationships, specificities, distinctions, acculturations) between
Rabbinic Judaism, Christian Judaism, and Early Islam. Thus the journal covers
a broad spectrum without being exclusive. It accepts contributions in French
as well as in English, German and Italian. Moreover, it is the only international
journal published in the French language on the subject of Ancient Judaism that is
characterized by historical and philological approaches to the material.

archaeologists, epigraphists, philosophers, historians and linguists is
directed to researchers with a particular interest in these areas of learning.
The journal publishes work related to the interaction between the classical
and Oriental worlds from the second century B.C.E. to the early centuries
of Islam. The cultural area covered by the journal stretches from the western
Mediterranean to the Middle East and includes Europe, Africa, and Asia
up to and including the Arabian peninsula.
Les  considérations  qui  précèdent  conduisent  à 
penser  que  nous  n’aurons  de  chance  de  comprendre

d’Histoire de l’Alimentation (IEHA). It is the first journal

The journal Almagest considers the history of science both
as a history of ideas and as an activity that takes place in an
institutional and social context. In discussing the history
of scientific ideas, the journal addresses the philosophical
assumptions underpinning the ideas as well as the scientific
developments themselves; it also addresses the influence of the
historical context on these ideas. One of the defining features
of the journal’s approach to the history of science is the belief
that the history of scientific ideas, of research priorities, of
conceptualizations of nature, and of the various external factors
that are associated with scientific discoveries are deeply related
to History, generally construed, and to cultural and socioeconomic parameters.
Following this approach, the journal invites papers on the
history of scientific ideas in specific regions or related to a
specific cultural context (for example, papers on science and
religion). It also invites papers on the relations of scientific
ideas to the material civilization, in particular to scientific
instruments. It is a firm belief of the editorial board that
history of science can contribute substantially to the scientific
education of both students and the general public, especially at
a time when debates over “intelligent design” are raising major
questions not only over what counts as science but also on
what ought to be available to students in their school curricula.
The journal, therefore, invites also papers on the utilization of
history of science in science education.

La production culturelle médiévale ne peut se concevoir sans prendre en compte le
livre manuscrit sous toutes ses formes. Abandonnant les scriptoria monastiques, puis les
« bibliothèques » cathédrales (et de facto, son état de privilège d’hommes d’Église),
le livre s’est très vite immiscé dans la cité avec l’avènement des grands centres
universitaires et de leurs collèges associés, l’essor considérable des ateliers laïcs à partir
du système de la pecia. Autour de lui
se sont alors développés des métiers
innovants, où l’enlumineur s’est
forgé une place de premier choix,
symbolisant toute l’importance de
l’image dans la société médiévale. Du
simple lecteur au « collectionneur »
averti, le livre manuscrit s’est ainsi
constitué un nouveau public, plus large, et de la Bible moralisée au Livre d’heures
(bestseller de la piété individuelle), l’objet culturel s’est parfois transformé en
objet marchand, pénétrant les imposantes « librairies » des nouveaux princes et
seigneurs bibliophiles. Mais le livre est aussi trace de mémoire. L’Église a continué
de l’utiliser pour son ministère liturgique (Évangiles, missels, psautiers, bréviaires,
etc.) ou ses solennités mortuaires (nécrologes, obituaires). À l’Université, le
« maître » s’est institué une collection appropriée, de droit (pour le légiste), ou de
théologie, ou de médecine; l’étudiant a copié son livre de cours. Chaque manuscrit
est de ce fait unique. Objet de diffusion du savoir, source documentaire de premier
ordre, son étude reste indispensable à qui veut comprendre le monde médiéval.
Pecia – Le livre et l’écrit – entend promouvoir les études de bibliologie par la
publication de contributions dédiées à l’histoire du livre manuscrit au Moyen Âge.
Chaque volume est articulé autour d’un thème central.
Pecia seeks to promote bibliologic studies through the publication of articles
dedicated to the history of the medieval manuscript book. Each volume is
structured around a central theme.

The Revue d’histoire des textes is published by the IRHT. It covers
a vast chronological and geographic realm, focusing on texts
composed before 1500 from the Latin, Greek, Romance and

previousy unpublished fragments. An index of all the manuscripts
cited makes each volume a valuable tool for authors of catalogues, as
well as for cultural historians and, in general, for all those interested
in the transmission of intellectual heritage.

Le Journal de la Renaissance est une revue plurilingue et
interdisciplinaire sur la Renaissance, considérée dans une
chronologie qui va de Pétrarque à Descartes. Le Journal de
la Renaissance se veut une tribune permettant non seulement
de rendre compte des travaux qui se mènent à Tours dans le
cadre de colloques et de journées d’études mais également de
donner la parole aux spécialistes d’Europe et d’ailleurs dont
les contributions bénéficieront d’une mise en perspective

The Journal de la Renaissance aims to be a forum for research
on the Renaissance, and is based at the Centre d’Études
Supérieures de la Renaissance (Université de Tours). The
Journal is home to volumes on the whole range of disciplines
covering the Renaissance, defined as being the period from
Petrarch through to Descartes. The periodical is no longer
published. Last available issue: 2008.
L’architecture antique dans le Neptune et Amphitrite de Jean Gossart
délégation flamande rentre aux Pays-Bas dès le printemps 159¹¹. Le retour de Gossart est quant
à lui plus incertain ; il est possible qu’il ait continué ses travaux quelques mois avant de regagner
le Nord¹² où il apparaît sur les registres de la confrérie de la Vierge à Middelbourg à la fin de
l’année 159, sous le nom de « Janin de
Waele »¹³.
Des travaux réalisés par l’artiste à Rome, seuls quatre dessins nous
sont parvenus¹⁴, représentant le Tireur
d’épine¹⁵, célèbre bronze transporté
en 1471 au Palais des Conservateurs
par Sixte IV, l’Hercule¹⁶ en bronze du
Capitole, exhumé au Forum Boarium,
l’Apollon au repos ou Pseudo Hermaphrodite¹⁷ du Musée National de Naples,
qui figure en 159 dans la collection
du chanoine Benedetto Sassi, et enfin
le Colisée¹⁸ (Fig. 1). Ils témoignent
du regard « primitif » que porte alors

saisissante lorsque le peintre flamand
entreprend de dessiner un monument
aussi classique que le Colisée. Il le présente par l’extrémité est de son ellipse, telle qu’on la voit
du pied du Palatin, à l’entrée du jardin Mattei. En vrai Flamand héritier des « primitifs » du
xvsiècle, Gossart procède alors à une étude analytique du monument, s’attardant à la représentation de chaque élément du décor. L’effet produit, rendu pittoresque par la présence des
touffes d’herbe qui rongent le sommet des arcades, montre qu’il n’en a pas saisi la structure. Il
voit certes la superposition des ordres dont le Colisée offre dans l’Antiquité le plus bel exemple ;
toutefois, il n’en traduit pas l’harmonie, altérant quelque peu les proportions de chacun des quatre niveaux qu’il sépare par une corniche exagérément saillante. Frappé par la masse imposante
de l’édifice, il l’élargit progressivement vers le haut créant ainsi une impression d’instabilité et
de déséquilibre. Son goût pour les lignes capricieuses s’exprime par la forme curviligne des

Mediaeval Studies is the annual journal published by the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies. It was
established in 1939 and from the outset its purpose has been the publication of research on the Middle Ages
by scholars throughout the world,
particularly research involving unedited manuscript and archival material. Most volumes are divided into three
sections: Texts includes extensive editions with substantial introductions;
Articles includes studies based on unedited or edited documents and texts
and also includes studies of other monuments of medieval culture; Mediaevalia consists of notices or short articles on specific documents or topics.
Mediaeval Studies est la revue annuelle publiée par le Pontifical Institute
of Mediaeval Studies. Elle a été créée en 1939 et dès le départ son but était
de publier les recherches sur le Moyen Âge fournies par des chercheurs
du monde entier, en particulier la recherche impliquant des manuscrits

The Medieval Low Countries.
An Annual Review is a new
peer-reviewed journal featuring
articles on the Low Countries
(viewed in its broadest sense as
the estuaries of Scheldt, Meuse,
Rhine and IJssel with their corresponding hinterlands), from
the start of the fifth to the second half of the sixteenth century. During
these centuries this was one of the major centers of economic, cultural,
religious and social creativity in Europe. By publishing the best of new
scholarship concerning the region over the course of the Middle Ages, The
Medieval Low Countries makes these achievements more fully visible and
helps display the connections between changes in each domain. At the same
time, the journal provides a forum for exchange and cooperation between
both established and upcoming scholars in several disciplines, whether in
Europe, the United States, or beyond.
The Medieval Low Countries is published as a single volume, once a year. The
editors consider submissions from a wide range of disciplines (history, law,
religion, art, architecture, literature, etc.). Articles that have an interdisciplinary or comparative scope and are carefully situated in the literature from
relevant disciplines are especially welcome, whether in the form of an article
presenting new research, a review essay or a short text edition. The journal
also includes relevant book reviews. The articles can be in English or French.

bourguignonnes (XIVe-XVIe siècles) – jusqu’en 1984
Centre européen d‘études burgondo-médianes – publie
annuellement les actes des rencontres scientifiques qu’il
organise dans une ville de l’espace géographique couvert
par ses travaux. Ses objectifs sont, selon les termes mêmes
de ses statuts, la promotion, l’encouragement et la coordination des études historiques relatives à l’époque des ducs
de Bourgogne de la Maison de Valois et des premiers Habsbourg, entre Mer du Nord, système fluvial Rhin-Danube et

For nearly fifty years, the Centre européen d’études bourguignonnnes (fourteenth and fifteenth centuries) – known
until 1984 as the Centre européen d’études burgondo-médianes – has published annually the acts of the scholarly meetings it organizes in cities within the territory covered by its
activities. Its objectives, as stated explicitly in its statutes, are
the promotion, the encouragement, and the coordination
of historical studies relating to the period of the Dukes of
Burgundy of the house of Valois and of the first Hapsburgs,
between the North Sea, the Rhine-Danube river system,
and the Mediterranean. The themes of these meetings relate
to different aspects of the past of these lands, with particular
emphasis on the political, economic, cultural and spiritual
links that existed between them. Because of their international and multilingual nature (French, German, English
and Italian), the volumes of the collection hold a position of
choice in the bibliography of studies devoted to this historical period which marks the transition between the Middle
Ages and the Renaissance in the Western world.

Magnificat, Salve sancta facies, O preciosissime sanguis,
Mater patris, Text Declamation, and a Paradox
Obrecht, it seems, never repeated either of the foregoing experiments. Yet, the liturgical
incantation that informs Omnis spiritus, one suspects, is the chief inspiration behind the
use of such word-driven, or ‘declamatory’ rhythms, in several Obrecht motets of more
ambitious scope, as well as in works by his contemporaries.22 In settings of the Magnificat
from the period it is unsurprising to find that the various underlying chant tones inform
not just melodic contours, but rhythmic and textural ones too, as happens occasionally
in the setting questionably ascribed to Obrecht in its single late source.23 However, such
declamatory textures are by no means confined to compositions based on recitation
chants. Among Obrecht’s motets we find them fleetingly in Salve sancta facies (e.g., at
the end of the prima pars and the opening of the secunda pars), and more pervasively
in O preciosissime sanguis, compositions that have in common the presence of a preexistent melodic cantus firmus in one voice and a sequence text in thirteen-syllable
goliardics in rhyming quatrains in the rest.

The European Yearbook of the History of Psychology. Sources, Theories, and Models (EYHP)
is a peer-reviewed international Journal devoted to the history of psychology, and
especially to the interconnections between historiographic survey and problems of
epistemology. The Yearbook welcomes contributions that offer precise reconstructions
of specific moments, topics, and persons in the history of psychology via the recovery
and critical analysis of archival as well as published sources. Critical editions of relevant
primary texts or archival sources are also welcome. The national traditions in Europe are
respected not only in their own right and in their interrelations, but also in their further
connection to and confrontation with non-European research traditions. With this focus, the Yearbook aims at uncovering paths
to aid the understanding of the common and of the specific roots of European scientific thought, and its building connections with
non-European traditions.
With an eye on the interdisciplinary nature of cultural studies, the Yearbook pays special attention to those common areas
between psychological research and its adjacent disciplines, in particular the human and the life sciences (philosophy, sociology,
anthropology, psychiatry, physiology, neurology, biology, zoology, etc.).
Aimed primarily at historians and philosophers of psychology, epistemologists, historians of philosophy, and historians of human
sciences, the Yearbook is also open to contributions from all areas of psychology that address a phenomenon or topic of interest in
psychology from a historical perspective and/or with an epistemological approach.

Among the many current periodicals in the world, very few can claim such an
authority, that even the oldest issues keep all their usefulness one century after
their publication. That is however the case for Analecta Bollandiana, a journal
of critical hagiography, edited and published since 1882 by the Société des
Bollandistes in Brussels. Since the very beginning, the journal was conceived
as a continuous updating of the prestigious Acta Sanctorum series, as well as
an entirely new instrument devoted to hagiographical research. Every issue
contains both critical editions of hagiographical texts (Greek, Latin, Oriental...), and fundamental studies about hagiography. The articles are published
in modern international languages (English, French, German or Italian), although an English summary has been appended in the latest issues to all the
contributions which are not written in English. About one fifth of each issue
is devoted to book reviews and bibliography on hagiography.
Such contents make the Analecta Bollandiana indispensable in any department of medieval, Byzantine, Slavonic or Christian oriental studies, as well as
of Church history, comparative religions, ethnology and folklore.
With both the inheritance of the great tradition given by the Acta Sanctorum
and the actual support of a highly qualified international scientific committee,
Analecta Bollandiana has been for a century and will remain the ideal forum
for everyone interested in Christian hagiography.
Analecta Bollandiana est une revue scientifique multilingue semestrielle de critique hagiographique. Elle est éditée et publiée depuis 1882 par la Société des
Bollandistes de Bruxelles.
Chaque numéro, qui compte chacun plus de 200 pages, contient des éditions
critiques de textes hagiographiques grecs, latins, ou de traditions orientales et
d’autres études fondamentales en hagiographie, y compris son histoire moderne. Les articles sont publiés dans les quatre langues, allemande, anglaise,
française, et italienne. Bibliographie hagiographique et recensions occupent
une place importante dans les Analecta Bollandiana.

Evidenti sono le consonanze tra Ambrogio e Petrarca nell’ambito
del genere consolatorio, certamente anche per il comune riferimento alla cultura classica, stoica in particolare. Alcuni di questi
temi assumono però un’indubbia coloritura cristiana: se la vita
è pellegrinaggio, «altra» è la patria; il quotidie morimur passa da
una concezione fisico-naturale a una morale-spirituale; il guardare al bene del defunto sottende in realtà la fiducia cristiana nel
giudizio di un Dio provvidente; sul versante di colui che rimane
in vita il rapporto può continuare non solo nel ricordo, ma anche
nella preghiera. Complessivamente diventa evidente lo sbilanciamento in avanti della visione cristiana, per la quale la pienezza non
è legata alla realizzazione nel presente, ma al guadagno dell’eterno.
Il contesto liturgico ed ecclesiale del discorso di Ambrogio spiega il
permanere di alcune differenze e diversa è pure la scrittura, maggiormente legata all’emozione del momento quella di Ambrogio,
tutta raccolta nell’interiorità e tesa a una forma prefissata e perfetta
quella del Petrarca.

The Journal of Medieval Monastic Studies seeks to fill a gap in current journal provision, offering a study of monasticism throughout
medieval Europe. An annual publication of international, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed articles on issues related to medieval
monastic history, the journal includes scholarly contributions on monastic history, archaeology and architectural history, art
history, literature, etc, as well as relevant book reviews and shorter notices. Great emphasis is placed on interdisciplinarity and
internationality. The twenty members of the editorial board include experts in history, archaeology, art history and theology,
covering all of medieval Europe. The language of publication is English, but abstracts in the original language of individual
contributions may be included.
The Journal of Medieval Monastic Studies cherche à combler un vide des les
recherches actuelles en proposant une étude du monachisme dans toute
l’Europe médiévale. En tant que publication annuelle interdisciplinaire
et internationale, le journal envisage de couvrir l’histoire monastique
médiévale dans tous ses aspects : l’archéologie et l’histoire architecturale,
l’art, l’histoire, la littérature… La revue est publiée en anglais, mais des
extraits dans la langue d’origine des auteurs pourront aussi y être inclus.

Moyen Âge: histoire, littérature, philologie, archéologie, iconographie,
philosophie, théologie. Si elle fait une grande place à l’œuvre d’Augustin, à
ses sources et à sa postériorité, elle est aussi largement ouverte aux travaux sur
les autres Pères latins et sur les Pères grecs. Par ses bulletins, ses chroniques
et ses recensions d’ouvrages savants, elle est un instrument bibliographique
et critique indispensable aux spécialistes. Depuis 1995 chaque article est
accompagné d’un résumé en anglais et français.
The Revue d’études augustiniennes et patristiques presents the progress of scholarship in the areas concerning Early Christianity
and the Early Middle Ages: history, literature, philology, Bible exegesis, archaeology, iconography, philosophy and theology. It
gives pride of place to the work of Augustine, its sources and its later influence. It publishes each year a systematic list of critical
reviews on Augustine. The Revue is also open to studies on other Latin Fathers and articles on the Greek Fathers are also carried.
Movements such as Gnosticism or Manichaeism are not neglected. Since 1995 each article has been summarized in English and
French.

La Revue bénédictine est un périodique scientifique d’histoire et
de littérature ecclésiastiques publié depuis 1884 par des moines de
l’Abbaye de Maredsous. Elle paraît deux fois par an (juin et décembre)
et publie des textes inédits et des études originales, surtout dans les
domaines de la patristique, de la liturgie et de l’histoire monastique.
La revue comprend aussi des comptes rendus et deux bulletins
bibliographiques : le Bulletin d’histoire bénédictine (deux fascicules
par an, distincts de la revue) et le Bulletin de la Bible latine.
The Revue bénédictine is an academic journal of ecclesiastical history
and literature published since 1884 by the monks of the Abbey of
Maredsous. It is released twice a year ( June and December) and
publishes unedited texts and original studies, mainly in the fields of
patristics, liturgics and monastic history. The Revue bénédictine also
includes book reviews and two bibliographical bulletins: the Bulletin
d’histoire bénédictine (two issues per year, separate from the Revue)
and the Bulletin de la Bible latine.

La Revue d’histoire de l’Église de
France, fondée en 1910, s’efforce de
tenir ses lecteurs au courant de tout
ce qui concerne le passé religieux
de la France, depuis les débuts du
christianisme jusqu’à nos jours. Elle
contient des articles de fond d’auteurs
français et étrangers, des projets de recherches ou d’enquêtes, un bulletin
critique sur un secteur de l’histoire religieuse, des comptes rendus critiques
des ouvrages récents et la recension des périodiques régionaux et locaux
se rapportant à l’histoire religieuse de la France. La RHEF paraît en deux
fascicules annuels, de 250 à 300 pages chacun. Les articles sont rédigés en
français mais sont accompagnés d’un résumé en anglais ou allemand.

The Revue d’histoire de l’Église de France is open to all studies and research
on the religious history of France from the first centuries A.D. to the present.
Alongside articles on specific issues, the journal also contains a Bulletin
critique and Notes bibliographiques as well as a section devoted to Périodiques
régionaux. Articles are written in French. Each article is summarised in two
languages (from French, English or German).

5. La bello estello — The brillant star. Ce jeu entend représenter les Mages
se rendant à Bethléem pour voir l’Enfant Jésus, guidés par l’étoile. Les Mages
sont au nombre de trois et sont revêtus de manteaux de différentes couleurs,
qui descendent jusqu’à leurs pieds. Ils ont toutes les sortes d’ornements que
l’on a pu réunir, et portent une couronne sur la tête. Ils ont chacun un page,
vêtu de la même couleur que son maître, qui porte une cassette contenant les

surmonté d’un panache de plumes ; il a des petits grelots à ses chevilles.
Quand on joue le jeu, la reine se tient en retrait et place ses mains sur ses
hanches faisant un gentil mouvement du corps, mais sans quitter sa place.
L’homme au château danse devant elle sur un air approprié à ce jeu exécuté
sur le tambourin. Après qu’il a dansé un moment, la reine lui adresse de la tête
un signe d’approbation pour signifier sa satisfaction. Ce jeu est appelé « la
visite de la reine de Saba à Salomon », mais, si l’on regarde ce qui est
représenté, ce pourrait être une visite rendue à n’importe qui, ou même à
personne. On ne peut s’empêcher toutefois de remarquer la circonspection de
Sa Majesté. Sachant que le faible de Salomon était son penchant excessif pour
le beau sexe, elle a pris soin de ne pas l’induire par là en tentation car
certainement ses demoiselles d’honneur ne risquaient pas de faire impression
sur le cœur du roi.

historique. Ils sont publiés essentiellement en français et en anglais, exceptionnellement en
allemand. Outre ces articles, la Revue propose au lecteur des recensions de livres récents
traitant d’histoire de l’Église au sens large sous forme de comptes rendus critiques ou de
notices brèves descriptives. Ces recensions ambitionnent de couvrir les plus importantes
publications de ce secteur. S’y ajoute une chronique décrivant par pays les colloques,
distinctions, thèses de doctorat, etc.
Founded in 1900, the Revue d’histoire ecclésiastique presents articles covering the entire history of Christianity. All of these articles
are based on original source research and often develop innovative aspects in the area of historical methodology. They are published
essentially in French and English, and exceptionally in German. Besides its articles, the Revue offers the reader recensions of recent
books dealing with Church history in the large sense, in the form of critical reviews or brief descriptions. These recensions try to
cover the most important publications in this sector. Added to that is a chronicle describing, by country, conferences, distinctions,
doctoral theses, etc.

broadest sense. Studies published refer mainly to the history of the
Church, the history of liturgy and patristics. Whilst excluding nothing,
the topics addressed refer more to factual and institutional history than
to doctrinal history. These articles often represent preliminary analyses
for later critical editions of patristic and medieval texts to be published
in various series of the Corpus Christianorum.
Sacris Erudiri est une revue internationale de science religieuse, au sens le plus large du terme. Les contributions publiées font
allusion à l’histoire de l’Église, l’histoire de la liturgie, et la patristique. Sans exclusivité, les sujets abordés concernent plus l’histoire
des faits et des institutions que l’histoire doctrinale. Ces articles contiennent surtout des analyses préliminaires aux éditions

Studia Orientalia Christiana. Collectanea is a journal that publishes annual studies
about Christian oriental Churches, Arab Christianity, and the presence of the Franciscans in the Middle East. The journal is published by scholars of the Franciscan Center
of Christian Oriental Studies, founded in Cairo by the Franciscan Custody of the Holy
Land in 1954 at the monastery of Mousky, the first Franciscan establishment in Egypt.
The Centre aims to promote research in two main areas: the development of the Eastern sciences among Middle East Christian communities and the documentation and
recording in chronicles of the lives and history of the Franciscans in the Middle East.
Studia Orientalia Christiana. Collectanea est une revue annuelle qui publie des études sur les Églises chrétiennes orientales, sur le
christianisme arabe et sur la présence des Franciscains au Moyen Orient. La revue est publiée par les chercheurs et les professeurs
du Centre Franciscain des Études Chrétiennes Orientales, qui a été fondé au Caire en 1954 par la Custodie Franciscaine de la
Terre Sainte sur le site du monastère de Mousky, le tout premier établissement franciscain en Égypte. Le centre se propose de
promouvoir la recherche académique dans deux secteurs différents: d’un côté le développement des sciences orientales dans les
communautés chrétiennes au Moyen Orient, de l’autre la documentation historique relative à la vie et à l’histoire des Franciscains
au Moyen Orient.
