design du Portugal, il faut s’éloigner de la vibrante
Lisbonne, longer la côte sur une vingtaine de kilomètres
pour atterrir à Cascais, la cité balnéaire chic pour
Lisboètes (et famille royale) en quête d’air iodé.
To find this hotel, one of the most astonishing design
hotels of Portugal, you must go along the coast about
20 kilometers from vibrant Lisbon to land in Cascais,
the chic seacoast spot for all Lisbon and the royal family
seeking sea air.

Farol Design Hotel
Le Design Farol Hotel est littéralement accroché à flanc de rocher et
paraît plonger dans l’Océan Atlantique. La bâtisse a été construite en
1890 par le comte de Cabral qui en avait fait sa résidence secondaire.
En 1974, elle est transformée en guesthouse avant d’être entièrement
rénovée en 2002 par le cabinet d’architectes portugais CM Dias
Arquitectos LDA. Le cahier des charges : d’une part restaurer le
bâtiment, d’autre part construire un second édifice. Le résultat forme
un ensemble harmonieux, un délicat contraste entre l’ancien et le
moderne. Quant à l’intérieur, il se la joue moderne et arty avec des
tonalités noires, blanches et argentées.
The Design Farol Hotel is literally hanging on the side of the rock cliff and
seems to plunge into the Atlantic Ocean. It was built in 1890 by the Count
of Cabral as a holiday home. In 1974 it was tranformed into a guesthouse
before being entirely restored in 2002 by the Portuguese architectural firm
CM Dias Arquitectos LDA. Specifications included : restore the building,
then build a second one. The result forms a harmonious setting, a delicate
contrast between the old and the modern. The interior plays on modern
styles with black, white and silver tones.

Les visiteurs sont accueillis par « Daniel », l’étrange sculpture de l’artiste
allemand Florian Raiss. Plus loin, dans le lobby décoré par Joao Cristo,
l’un des propriétaires, trône le grand sofa modulable Flap de Francesco
Binfaré. Direction ensuite le lounge-bar On the Rocks, avec les paysages
de la peintre brésilienne Ana Michaelis, puis le restaurant The Mix, tous
deux éclairés avec les suspensions Zeppelin dessinées par Marcel
Wanders pour Flos et inspirées des cocons. Côté hébergement, on
peut choisir l’une des vingt chambres épurées conçues par l’architecte
d’intérieur Cristina Santos Silva, mais pour tenter vraiment l’expérience
Farol, il faut opter pour l’une des dix «Designer Rooms».

The visitors are welcomed by « Daniel », the strange sculpture by the
German artist Florian Raiss. In the lobby decorated by Joao Cristo, one of
the owners, stands the great modulable sofa Flap by Francesco Binfaré.
Head then to the lounge-bar On the Rocks, with the landscapes by the
Brazilian painter Ana Michaelis, then on to the restaurant The Mix, both lit
with Zeppelin hanging lamps designed by Marcel Wanders for Flos and
inspired by cocoons. For the lodgings, one can choose one of the twenty
rooms designed in pure lines by the interior architect Cristina Santos Silva,
but to really enjoy the Farol experience, one must choose one of the ten
«Designer Rooms».
Le concept ? Chacune de ces suites a été confiée à un créateur
portugais, Ana Salazar, Fatima Lopes et Miguel Vieira, entre autres.
Celle de ce dernier est entièrement blanche, des rideaux qui couvrent
les murs jusqu’aux lettres AMOR qui forment les pieds d’une console.
Après une nuit dans de beaux draps, on se réveille en douceur en faisant
un plongeon dans la piscine d’eau salée qui offre une vue plongeante
sur l’océan. Un panorama que l’on continue de contempler affalé sur les
sièges entièrement blancs de l’espagnol Gandia Blasco, baignés le soir
par les douces lumières de VG New trend. A moins que l’on opte pour
une salutation au soleil dans le studio de yoga extérieur, perché sur les
rochers, face à la mer.
The concept? Each of these suites was entrusted to a Portuguese creator,
Ana Salazar, Fatima Lopes and Miguel Vieira, to name a few. The latter
created a suite completely white, from the curtains covering the walls to
the letters AMOR which form the feet of a console. After a night in such
sweet sheets, one wakes up with a plunge in the saltwater pool that has
a view of the ocean. A panorama that one can continue to enjoy while
lounging on the white seats by the Spanish creator Gandia Blasco, bathed
evenings by the soft lights of VG New trend. Unless one chooses to greet
the sun in the outdoor yoga studio, perched on the rocks facing the sea.
