Craig Scott - Canadian Union of Postal Workers
HOUSE OF COMMONS CHAMBRE DES COMMUNES CANADA Craig Scott Member of Parliament I Depute Toronto-Danforth November 4, 2013 Denis Lemelin National President Canadian Union of Postal Workers 377 Bank Street Ottawa, ON K2Pl Y3 Dear Mr. Lemelin, The NDP stan ds with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers in encouraging Canada Post to consider the potential in expanding revenue generating services, such as postal banking. Under the current Conservative government, Canada Post management is insisting on reducing postal services rather than creating new services for Canadians. This means job cuts, cut-backs to public services, less frequent mail delivery and replacing door-to-door delivery wi.th community mailboxes in urban residential areas like ours. We understand the challenges that Canada Post is facing with the need to keep up with the reality of declining amounts of letters sent by mail in this new digital era, but broad cuts are not the answer. Following the report commissioned by Canada Post management and published in April 2013, the New Democratic Party formally requested the Conservative government to commit to maintaining the postal services many Canadians rely on. Until last year, Canada Post always made profits, despite a significant reduction in mail. Canada Post must work to find long-term so lutions to ensure the viab ility of quality postal services. In my riding of Toronto-Danforth, we have mailed every household to inform them of the proposed cha nges and encouraged them to send a message to Canada Post that better solutions exist, like adding banking services as a revenue generator in order to avoid some of the proposed cun Sincerely, M / ,XJ(;\ Craig Scott, MP Toronto-Danfo rth
