L’Egypte est certainement le pays dont le cinéma a la plus grande aura dans la région.
Son histoire d’abord le place comme une référence pour le public arabophone. Les films
égyptiens rencontrent ainsi régulièrement le succès dans les pays arabes mais peinent
cependant à conquérir le marché européen, à l’exception du récent et inattendu succès
de l’Immeuble Yacoubian.
Le système de production a radicalement changé ces dernières décennies. Après une
période où le cinéma était entièrement nationalisé, l’argent public est désormais rare
mais la production maintient un bon niveau grâce aux financements du marché et à
d’importants fonds privés.
La distribution locale n’est pas diversifiée et se résume en fait à une opposition entre
films nationaux et films américains. Pourtant le pays dispose d’un vaste parc de salles et
les billets sont à des tarifs assez bas.
Comme dans tous les pays de la région, la piraterie a des effets terribles sur le secteur.
Egypt is certainly the country which cinema has the best aura in the region. Its history
makes it a reference for the Arab speaking audience. Egyptian films are often successful
in Arab countries but have not conquered the European market yet, in spite of the recent
and unexpected success of the Yacoubian Building.
The system of production has deeply changed in the last decades. After a period when
the film sector was entirely under public control, there is now almost no public money.
This does not prevent numerous films from being made thanks to markets and private
financing.
Local distribution is not diversified and can be summarized as an opposition between
national and American movies. However the country has a large network and tickets
prices are quite low.
Like in all countries of the region, piracy has terrible effects upon the sector.
