Women’s March in Athens Do you want to add your voice to this Saturday’s historic Women’s March in Washington? Here’s how you can take part here in Athens: It started as a simple Facebook post in Washington D.C. And then went viral. And while not being branded as an anti-Trump protest, the underlying message is loud and clear. The day after Donald Trump is sworn in as president, the Women’s March on Washington intends to greet his controversial presidency by making a statement. Organisers are now expecting 200,000 to take part in the Washington march, including influential Hollywood stars such as Julianne Moore and Jessica Chastain. Meanwhile, as of Monday, nearly 700,000 people have expressed interest in 370 sister marches around the world, according to CNN. The march’s mission statement says: “The Women’s March on Washington will send a bold message to our new government on their first day in office, and to the world that women’s rights are human rights. We stand together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us. Anyone interested in the issue, not just women, is welcome, organizers say. For those who want to add their voices in Athens on Saturday, a parallel solidarity march has been organized: WHERE: Outside the U.S. Embassy Athens, 91 Vas. Sofias Avenue, tel: 210.721.2951. Host: Maria Kostaki. WHEN: Saturday, January 21, at 5pm. For more information, visit the event link HERE Insider Weekly, January 18, 2017. This is Not Francisco Blanka Amezkua Normal: San WHAT: Of any city in the U.S., San Francisco comes closest to the spirit of resistance and mind-set of Athens (relative wealth differentials notwithstanding!). San Francisco’s diversity and eccentricity have long fed alternative and counter-cultural movements and sparked a sense of celebratory freedom. FoKiaNou24/7 presents ‘This Is Not Normal’, an exhibition of eight San Francisco artists Blanka Amezkua, Sarah Barsness, Brad Brown, Clancy Cavnar, Mary Cox, Kornelios Grammenos, Marino Pascal and Anne Veraldi. The show takes its title from the comedian John Oliver, whose exhortation to resist normalization of American political realities became a movement and Twitter hashtag. But the title has a double meaning. This exhibition presents to Athenians a sample of work by artists who have embraced alternative ways of looking, representing and thinking. Four of the artists are currently based in San Francisco, while four have previous ties that have informed their work. Curated by Mary Cox. WHEN: January 10 until February 4. Thursday to Saturday from 17:00 to 20:00.
