News from the IHEC Office!
Hello from the IHEC office!
April was another busy month for IHEC.
Jessica attended two more consultation visits at Millikin
University and Eastern Illinois University with members of the
EIU College of Student Affairs consultation class. IHEC is
hoping to conduct consultations on campuses in the future, so this
was a great learning experience!
We hosted a webinar on “AOD Use Among Students of Color”
on April 9th.
Eric and Jessica attended the 24 hour Alcohol Enforcement
Officer’s Course at the Joliet Police Department hosted by
Prevention First.
On April 22nd, IHEC hosted our first bidder’s meeting for the
Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws Grants. On April 30th, we
hosted a webinar on the EUDL grant RFP for those people who
were unable to attend the meeting.
IHEC staff have also been busy preparing for the Jason Kilmer
training on June 16 and 17. Registration is now open for this
training and we hope you will join us!
As always, IHEC staff members are available for technical
assistance so feel free to contact our offices at any time! Thank
you for being a part of IHEC! We appreciate you!!!

IHEC Affiliate Member Spotlight: Lisa Currie
Lisa Currie
Northwestern
University
In October 2009, Lisa Currie became the Director of Health
Promotion & Wellness at Northwestern University. Previously,
she was at Wesleyan University in Connecticut for nine years as
the Director of Health Education and before that, the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania as the Assistant Director of the
Wellness Center for four years. Lisa has a master's degree
(MSEd) in College Student Personnel from University of
Wisconsin - LaCrosse and BA in Journalism from University of
Wisconsin - Eau Claire. “Needless to say, I'm definitely one of
those people who didn't let my degrees dictate my career path!”
Lisa has an interest in working with college students as an
undergraduate. She has served as an orientation leader and peer
counselor at UWEC. Lisa was inspired to get into health
promotion after her graduate assistantship with the Reach &
Share peer health education program at UW-L.
Peer education has been a significant focus throughout her
career. As a result, she has served as a volunteer state
coordinator and area consultant for the BACCHUS Network
and currently support BACCHUS by working on
their Smartersex.org website and contributing to planning their
national peer education advisor's conference, being held
in Maryland this June. Lisa has also done a bit of freelance
writing and speaking on college health issues.
In returning to the Midwest for her position at NU, Lisa feels
like she has come full circle -- “I was born in Evanston and I'm
literally living 8 blocks from where my family lived at that time.
Outside of work, I'm enjoying rediscovering Chicago and
reconnecting with my extended family. I also love going to the
theater, creating handmade jewelry to sell in my online Etsy
shop, and generally spend far too much time online reading blogs.”
Thank you for being a part of IHEC Lisa! We appreciate you!

Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws Grant RFP Bidder’s Meeting
On April 22, IHEC hosted the first bidder’s meeting for the Enforcing Underage Drinking
Laws (EUDL) Grant. The meeting was from 1-3:30PM at Chestnut Health Systems in
Bloomington, IL. There were 14 people in attendance from 10 different schools or agencies. The purpose of this meeting was to explain the RFP process, the grant and enforcement activities, and what other schools are currently doing with their EUDL grants. The
meeting started out by Eric Davidson, IHEC Director, giving an overview of the EUDL
grants, including the history and purpose of the grants. He then discussed acceptable and
unacceptable grant activities and enforcement activities. 5 of the 6 current EUDL schools
were on hand to discuss how they use the grant and how the grant has helped their campuses and communities. The schools present were: Bradley University, Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, University of Illinois Springfield, and Western Illinois University. After that, Eric and Jessica talked about the RFP and what was expected
of those who were planning to apply for the grant. The meeting was beneficial and a lot
of great ideas were shared. On April 30, IHEC hosted a EUDL webinar in response to
those who were unable to attend the bidder’s meeting. The webinar was the same format
as the meeting in Bloomington.
Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws Grant RFP Due May 14th
The RFP for the FY11 EUDL Grant is due to Eric Davidson no later than 12 noon
on Friday, May 14th, 2010. You can email your proposal to Eric at

“Social Networking and Alcohol Use”
May 7th 10am-11am
Presented By: EIU Health Studies Faculty
Dr. Julie Dietz, Dr. Sheila Simons, Dr. Misty Rhoads
This webinar will address peer influence on alcohol intake through the use of social networks. Teenagers and young adults
(16-24) are spending an increasing amount of time on the internet and alcohol producers are keeping pace with advertising
on social networks (EUCAM, 2009). Social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace each have over 250 million
users with a third of just the Facebook users being under the age of twenty (Mart, S., Mergendoller, M., & Simon, 2009).
Presenters will discuss peer pressure and alcohol usage, marketing ploys producers use on social networks, and theoretical
constructs that may aid in fighting this phenomenon.

dence life, and athletics) to increase student access to evidence-based approaches. He is also a Research Assistant Professor in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, continuing a 20-year affiliation with colleagues at the Addictive Behaviors Research Center and the Center for the
Study of Health and Risk Behaviors as an investigator on studies evaluating prevention and intervention efforts for alcohol and drug use by college

Lyndsey Withers (in

of Alcohol Education
and Awareness
Programs at Bradley
University
Bradley University’s Wellness Program is the alcohol education and
prevention hub at the university. There are two staff members
(Melissa Sage-Bollenbach, Director of Wellness Programs & Lyndsey
Withers, Coordinator of Alcohol Education & Awareness Programs)
as well as three student organizations that make up the Wellness Program family. The student organizations include the Bradley HEAT
(a traditional peer-education group), SONOR (which stands for SOcial NORming, the group focused on providing positive social norms
about alcohol and tobacco use on campus), and Late Night BU (a
late night programming team).
In the fall of 2008, Bradley launched a Comprehensive Alcohol Action Plan, which standardized judicial consequences, increased education and programming, and created a community coalition. The
highlight of this program has been the late night programming initiative, called Late Night BU. Late Night BU is held once a month in
the recreation facility. The event brings in about 1,000 students each
time, and provides the students with free food and activities from
10pm until 2am. One of the most rewarding parts of Late Night BU
has been the collaboration. Wellness, Campus Recreation, and Student Activities work together to run this event. Community businesses and restaurants donate time, money, food, and more. Student
organization volunteer their time to host an event at Late Night
BU. But just as important has been the creativity the event
brings. Event themes range from “Back to the 80s” to “Space Adventure” to “Fiesta de Bradley” and feature hands-on crafts, dance lessons, inflatable's, petting zoos, and much more. You have to see it to
believe it. …so come visit Bradley University any Late Night BU
you want and have a look at what your school could do!
