Founded in Marseille in the 1850s, the Sainte Marthe factory
is today one of the last remaining French soap makers to
perform the saponification reaction.
Savon de Marseille (Marseille Soap), the company’s
speciality, is made in a cauldron using the traditional recipe
invented at the time. Nowadays this recipe has been
abandoned by most soap makers, but the ancestral know-how
of the Compagnie des Détergents et du Savon de Marseille is
passed down from generation to generation. The soap makers
are so experienced that they can assess the quality of the
product by simple touch and sight. Thanks to this expertise,
55% of the company’s turnover is from export, thus spreading
the reputation of this famous cube with a thousand virtues!
