KD>8: is a European project for the sustainable development and
innovation of choral singing, a first-time major cooperation between
choral operators, music educators and researchers. It is a joint effort of 14
coorganisers, spread over 11 countries. It started in June 2012 and will develop until May 2015. It has a total budget of almost 2,4 million EUR, with
a subsidy from the European Union of almost 1,2 million EUR.
June 2012
May 2015
The aims of VOICE are to encourage new events and methods and the
creation of innovative repertoire, promote the voice as universal instrument, improve the quality of vocal music, enable transnational mobility
and circulation of (young) musicians and choral works, enhance the
dialogue between cultures and generations as well as the exchange of
expertise and develop new tools for the promotion of singing in music
education. VOICE invests in research on the voice in partnership with
universities and collect data on choral life in Europe. The 14 partners will
spread the results to develop a new vision on choral singing in Europe.
Activities of VOICE from 2012 to 2015 through which these aims shall
be reached include a major choral festival in Italy, an urban youth choir
festival in Sweden, singing as a tool for reconciliation in Cyprus, two sessions of the Eurochoir for young singers in Czech Republic and Hungary,
training courses and seminars for conductors and managers in Austria,
France, Italy and Sweden, a conference on Mediterranean Music in Spain,
a symposium on singing and music education in Hungary, a vocal training programme for teachers and a cooperation programme with the
world of education in Belgium, research programmes on the growth of
young people in relation to their singing voice and on vocal health of
amateur singers, done from Belgium and United Kingdom, an international collection of lullabies and databases on choral life, voice-training
and conductors’ training in Europe.
More information can be found on www.thevoiceproject.eu
VOICE is coordinated by the European Choral Association – Europa Cantat
(Germany) in cooperation with Chorverband Österreich (Austria), Expertisecentrum Stem (Belgium), Koor&Stem (Belgium), Epilogi (Cyprus), UCPS

The main characteristic of Frieder Bernius’ career has been his perpetual
search for new scores, the practice of questioning traditional interpretations of European music and the fact of creating an unmistakable individual sound. Since he was convinced he could only successfully achieve his
aims with his own ensembles, the organisation “Musikpodium Stuttgart”
was formed under which Bernius’ activities were combined.

Thirty of more than 80 CD recordings of the Kammerchor Stuttgart have
received international record awards such as: ‘Choc du Monde de la
musique’ and the ‘Edison Klassiek’ for his Schuetz and Bach recordings,
the ‘Diapason d’Or de l’année’ for Mozart’s Requiem and many ‘Quarterly
Awards of the German Record Critics’ for a capella recordings. Serving as

FOR CONDUCTORS
In addition to its own courses for choral conductors the European Choral Association – Europa

events which are organised by others but offer
interesting aspects to choral conductors interested
in improving their skills, widening their repertoire

do not have any responsibility for the contents and
organisation of these events.
International Study Tours offer choral
conductors the opportunity to
• visit atelier rehearsals and observe
the work of the atelier conductors
- prepare and discuss these visits together
with a conductor who is at the same time
the “guide” of the group and the director
of the Study Tour
- meet the atelier conductors for discussion
rounds
- in some cases: attend presentations and
lectures by different conductors on
specific repertoire or styles
- in some cases: meet composers of the
host country
- learn more about the choral life and
repertoire of the host country

continuation of the “Golden Tuning Fork” Award,
organised by AGEC over many years, and was first
organised by the European Choral Association –
Europa Cantat in 2011/2012. The aim of the award
is to discover unknown or less known choral
works from different European countries, already
published and/or performed or written for the
occasion, that are good and interesting and can
be performed by a good average choir, not just by
a top-level choir.
In 2012 3 winning works were chosen and performed in the frame of the festival EUROPA CANTAT XVIII in Turin, Italy, 2 further works received
special mentions (see www.eca-ec.org -> Events
-> Composition Award for further details).

The next edition of the European Award for
Choral Composers will be organised in 2014, with
the winning compositions being performed in the

submit up to 3 works in each category, composed
by one or different composers within the past five
years.

Compositions can be submitted to one of the
following three categories: (a) choir a cappella
(classical), (b) choir accompanied by up to four
instrument (classical), (c) a jazz composition for
choir a cappella or accompanied by up to three

to eight vocal parts is possible (mixed or equal
voices). The performance time of a composition is
limited between minimum three and maximum
nine minutes. All compositions should be able
to be performed by good average choirs. The
choice of the text is free, on the condition that the
composer is formally authorized by the
author or editor to use this text (if appropriate).
Deadline for applications is April
May30th
31st2014,
2014
the winning compositions will be chosen by

been performed and/or published. Compositions may not be entered for this competition
more than twice.

Each awarded work will be performed at least
once by the good care of the national or regional federation of its origin and this before the
end of the year following the year of awarding.

Choral conductors, music pedagogues, conducting teachers, music
teacher training institutions, researchers of music education
As a follow-up of conferences on singing and music education (e.g. “The
Glee of Centuries” in Vilnius 2009 and several workshops and conferences on music education organised by the European Music Council
and some of its members), the Symposium shall focus on different music
education approaches that involve singing, including a strong focus
on how the Kodály concept can still be used despite the fact that basic
conditions have changed. The Symposium will gather music pedagogues, professors of teacher training institutions, conductors, choirs,
vocal ensembles and singers from Europe and all over the world who
can present and demonstrate how they use various music education
methods, including the Kodály concept.
Based on direct invitations and open calls both for papers and good
practices, around 15-20 lecturers and presenters, 8-10 choirs and/or vocal ensembles shall be selected for lectures, demonstrations and round
table discussions. The Symposium’s programme will be arranged around
the following main themes:
1. Formal singing-based music education at school
(regular schools and music schools)
2. Non-formal music learning opportunities outside school
3. Benefits of singing in communities our society
4. Music teacher and/or choral conductor’s training?
One of the event’s focus points is how singing in communities can shape
individuals and develop our society nowadays. The Symposium aims for
concluding its sessions with a declaration on the impact and benefits of
singing in communities on our society.

PÉCS for choirs and singers, composers,
conductors and managers
EUROPA CANTAT is the flagship event of the European Choral Association – Europa Cantat organised every three years in a different country.
In 2015 the festival will be hosted by Pécs in Hungary, which already
hosted the 1988 edition. The festival offers a rich programme for all
types and levels of choirs, vocal ensembles, individual singers, conductors, composers and choral managers, from Europe and other parts of
the world.

There will be about 40-50 4 to 8-day-workshops for choirs and singers,
daily discovery ateliers, a programme of lectures and workshops for
conductors and composers, moreover a youth event management
training programme. The daily Open Singing brings together every
evening participants of the festival and inhabitants of Pécs.
We are planning a rich accompanying concert programme with repertoire from all corners of Europe and beyond, presenting exemplary
choirs, vocal and instrumental groups, the participating choirs and
music groups from the region. Participants will also have the opportunity to discover the beauties of the city and the countryside, and to
have fun with each other.
The main theme for the festival will be „Crossroads“, symbolising
Europe as a melting pot of different kinds of cultures and nations. What
makes us strong is our diversity and our great culture - our history is
our special capital. What we want to see, to show and to experience
at the EUROPA CANTAT XIX Pécs festival is the crossing of different
religions, cultures, countries and of course music styles – without losing
their originality!
Further themes will be “Roots & Fruits”(dealing with traditions and
innovation, linking past, present and the future) and “Open Gates” (linking the festival to the neighboring countries, to other art forms and to
new ideas). The festival also wants to open “mental gates”, convincing
people that choral music is fresh, young and essential for our society!
The detailed programme will be presented in spring 2014.

dernier jour de la manifestation.
Comment dois-je faire pour m’inscrire ?
Merci d’écrire directement aux
organisateurs pour demander des
informations supplémentaires et les
documents d’inscription, ou bien de
consulter www.EuropeanChoralAssociation.org -> Events 2014.

choristes individuels, groupes vocaux,
groupes de choristes et choeurs de

des concerts dans des salles de concert
et des églises, avec les résultats des
ateliers et avec les choeurs participants,

ainsi que du temps libre pour faire du
tourisme, des excursions etc. A chaque
semaine chantante vous chanterez
dans UN des ateliers indiqués et vous
aurez des répétitions dans cet atelier
chaque matin et quelquefois aussi
l’après-midi.
