The Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG) was founded in the late 1980s in response to
years of lobbying and organizing on the part of Ottawa artists who felt they
needed a municipal gallery to better represent the local artistic energy. It
was finally achieved in September 1988, with its opening as the Gallery at
Arts Court.
La Galerie d’art d’Ottawa (GAO) a été fondée à la fin des années 1980 après
plusieurs années de lobbying et de mobilisation de la part des artistes
d’Ottawa, convaincus qu’ils avaient besoin d’une galerie municipale pour
mieux représenter l’énergie artistique locale. Leur objectif a finalement été
atteint en septembre 1988 avec l’ouverture de la Galerie à la Cour des arts.

In 1992, the City of Ottawa was given the Firestone Art Collection (now called
the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art) and custodianship of the Collection
was transferred to the recently renamed Ottawa Art Gallery, which received
designation as Ottawa’s municipal art gallery as part of the agreement. The
incorporation of the Gallery as an independent charitable organization took
place in 1993, with the election of its first Board of Directors.
En 1992, la Ville d’Ottawa s’est vue offrir la Collection d’art Firestone
(aujourd’hui la Collection Firestone d’art canadien) et la garde de la
Collection fut confiée à la nouvellement rebaptisée Galerie d’art d’Ottawa,
désignée galerie d’art municipale dans le cadre de l’entente. La Galerie a
été incorporée comme organisme de bienfaisance indépendant en 1993,
avec l’élection de son premier conseil d’administration.

Acquisitions
Since the mid-1990s, the OAG has developed innumerable, compelling
exhibitions, public programs and publications. The gallery’s organizational,
financial and governance structures have increased significantly over the last
25 years. The OAG is currently involved in the planning for a new, purposebuilt gallery to be operational by 2017.
Depuis le milieu des années 1990, la GAO a développé d’innombrables
expositions passionnantes, programmes publics et publications. La
structure organisationnelle, financière et de gouvernance de la Galerie s’est
développée de manière considérable au cours des 25 dernières années.
La GAO se consacre actuellement à un projet de construction d’un nouvel
immeuble conçu à cet effet qui sera opérationnel dès 2017.

The Ottawa Art Gallery’s 25th Anniversary was a time to celebrate
and reflect on the numerous individual, corporate and government
contributions that have shaped us into the forward-thinking cultural
institution that we are today. By mapping out these contributions,
throughout 2013, on our timeline wall (pictured below), we were able
to articulate the approach the gallery has taken to build its programming
reputation and sustainable operations. By marking each significant
milestone in the gallery’s history, it is clear that the OAG is ready for a
major leap forward; we have done our homework, built support and
demonstrated our ability to grow our gallery.
La GAO marquait en 2013 son 25e anniversaire et ce fut l’occasion de se rappeler
et de célébrer les contributions des gens, des entreprises et des gouvernements
qui nous ont permis de devenir l’institution culturelle durable, mature et axée sur
l’avenir que nous sommes aujourd’hui. En affichant ces contributions sur notre
ligne de temps murale (illustrée ci-dessous), nous avons pu exprimer clairement
toutes les étapes que la Galerie a empruntées pour bâtir la réputation de ses
programmes et la durabilité de ses opérations. Lorsque l’on constate ces jalons
importants dans l’histoire de la Galerie, il devient évident que la GAO est prête
pour un grand bond vers l’avant. Nos devoirs sont faits : nous avons obtenu
l’appui nécessaire et démontré notre habileté à faire grandir la galerie.
The OAG is grateful to the numerous public and corporate associations
as well as individuals who contributed to the success of 2013. We
acknowledge the fundamental support of our government partners:
the City of Ottawa, the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for
the Arts. The OAG’s loyal donor and membership base must also be
acknowledged for their continued belief in the importance of a municipal
art gallery. As always, we must thank our arts community for helping us
view the world, and our place within it, in new ways.
La GAO souhaite exprimer sa reconnaissance aux nombreux organismes
publics, entreprises et individus qui ont contribué au succès de
2013. Nous tenons à souligner l’appui essentiel de nos partenaires

The Ottawa Art Gallery continued to be guided by its Five Strategic
Priorities and these goals have provided a logic and structure to our 2013
Annual Report.

Secure a More Appropriate Facility

On November 13th, 2013, the OAG Expansion and Arts Court
Redevelopment project received the unanimous green light from Ottawa
City Council. This major milestone represented years of hard work on
behalf of the OAG, Arts Court organizations and the City of Ottawa.
Le projet d’agrandissement de la GAO et de réaménagement de la
Cour des arts a été approuvé à l’unanimité par le Conseil municipal
d’Ottawa le 13 novembre 2013. Cette étape importante est le point

Maximize the OAG’s Visibility

Twenty-thirteen marked the OAG’s 25th or Silver anniversary. The
gallery used this year to celebrate milestones, focus on our collection
and present the OAG’s future plans. This campaign included an
anniversary launch and opening reception of Heart of the Moment:
Selections from the Permanent Collection exhibition, a special
anniversary brochure with congratulatory messages, and a major
lecture series focusing on collecting.
La GAO célébrait en 2013 son 25e anniversaire, ou jubilé d’argent. La
galerie a profité de l’occasion pour célébrer les jalons dans son histoire,
mettre l’accent sur sa collection et présenter ses plans d’avenir. La
campagne a compris une soirée de lancement et un vernissage pour
l’exposition Au cœur du moment. Sélections de la Collection permanente,
un livret d’anniversaire spécial avec messages de félicitations et une
importante série de conférences axées sur le collectionnement.

Build and Strengthen OAG’s Collaborative and
Supportive Relationships with the City
Bâtir et renforcer les relations de collaboration et
d’appui entre la GAO et la ville
In collaboration with the City of Ottawa, the OAG
marked the 40th anniversary of the Firestone Collection
of Canadian Art. This anniversary allowed us to highlight
how this important collection has acted as a bridge between new
audience members and the gallery as well as between countries as
exemplified by a display of Firestone Collection paintings at the American
Ambassador’s residence along with works by important American painters.

Firestone d’art canadien en collaboration avec la ville d’Ottawa.
Grâce à cet anniversaire, nous avons pu mettre en valeur les

Strengthen Links with Artists in the Community
Renforcer les liens avec les artistes dans la communauté
The OAG implemented a seven-year acquisition plan that allows us to take in large donations and purchases of artists’ works to ensure that gaps within
our collection are filled, and that the gallery captures the breadth and depth of an artist’s oeuvre. The OAG increased the number of artworks in the
OAG’s Permanent Collection by more than 10 per cent in 2013 with an overall value of approximately $1,000,000. We have also received significant family
donations of art including the Miriam and Hudson Sargeant Art Collection in 2013.
La GAO a mis en œuvre un plan d’acquisition sur sept ans qui nous permet d’accepter de grands dons et achats, permettant ainsi de combler des
lacunes de notre collection et de faire en sorte que toute l’ampleur de la carrière d’un artiste y soit représentée. Le nombre d’œuvres dans la
collection permanente de la GAO a augmenté de plus de 10 pour cent en 2013 et cet ajout est évalué à approximativement 1 000 000 $. Nous avons

Attract Broad and Diverse Communities to the Gallery
Attirer de vastes et diverses communautés à la Galerie
After years of fostering relationships with local and national organizations, the OAG has become a true festival hub and community player. In 2013, the
Gallery partnered with eight different local and national festivals and events. These include Canadian Heritage’s Winterlude, the National Art Centre’s
Northern Scene, the Creative City Summit hosted by the City of Ottawa, the National Gallery of Canada’s Sakahàn: International Indigenous Art exhibition,
the Ottawa International Animation Festival, Nuit Blanche Ottawa-Gatineau, Culture Days, and Arboretum Festival. The OAG also sent its Art Tent to various
events and festivals throughout the summer.
La GAO développe depuis plusieurs années ses rapports avec des organismes locaux et nationaux, et joue à présent un rôle clé dans la communauté en étant une
véritable centrale pour les festivals. La galerie s’est associée avec huit différents festivals et événements d’envergure locale et nationale, en l’occurrence Bal de Neige
de Patrimoine canadien, Scène du Nord du Centre national des Arts, le Sommet des villes créatives accueilli par la Ville d’Ottawa, l’exposition Sakahàn. Art indigène
international du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada, le Festival international d’animation d’Ottawa, Nuit Blanche Ottawa-Gatineau, la Fête de la culture et le festival
Arboretum. La GAO a aussi déployé sa Tente des arts à différents événements et festivals au courant de l’été.

Le pARTy Art Auction is our premiere annual fundraising event, produced by
our hardworking committee and lead by Chair Leslie McKay. The $91,000
raised supported the exhibition and educational programming needs of the
Gallery. In 2013, this highly anticipated event brought more than 300 guests
including corporate, arts and community members. This auction of 65 original
works of art made by some of the city’s most talented artists also includes an
Art Lover’s VIP reception and sampling from various high end caterers. The
Critics’ Choice panel of local art experts, Paul Gessell, Diana Neimroff and
Megan Smith, highlighted three of the works on auction.

L’art du golfe et ses partenaires
We hosted our final Partners in Art Golf Tournament this year. This successful
tournament supports the exhibition and educational programming needs of
the Gallery. This event, run by our tireless committee headed by Tom Houston
took place Rivermead Golf Club and also included both a silent and live auction.
We were delighted that Honourary Patron’s The Honourable John Baird,
Foreign Affairs Minister & Mayor Jim Watson supported our efforts.
Nous avons présenté notre dernier tournoi L’art du golf et ses partenaires
cette année. Ce tournoi des plus réussi appuie les expositions et les
programmes éducatifs de la Galerie. L’événement, organisé par un
infatigable comité dirigé par Tom Houston, a eu lieu au Club de golf
Rivermead et proposait des ventes aux enchères en direct et par écrit. Nous

OAG’s ART Rental and Sales is a service that strives to promote local
contemporary artists through the sale, rental and exhibition of their
work. As an important showcase for established and emerging artists,
it continually accepts original submissions for jury in all media. Revenue
generated from this service is shared between the participating artists
and the OAG.
ART vente et location est un service qui souhaite faire connaître le
travail d’artistes contemporains de la région par la vente, la location et
l’exposition de leurs œuvres. Il accepte continuellement des œuvres
originales, d’une variété de médiums, à soumettre aux membres de son
jury. Le service ART vente et location est une importante vitrine pour les
artistes établis et en début de carrière, car tous les profits d’ART vente et
location sont partagés entre les artistes et la GAO.
