August 18, 2012 Canada wins silver and bronze at Pan American Junior Water Polo Championships
MONTREAL – Canada won the silver medal in women’s competition and the bronze in men’s play on Saturday at the UANA Pan American Junior (19U) Water Polo Championships.
In the women’s final, the U.S., held on for a 7-­‐6 victory over the Canadians. Michelle Caron of Montreal and Emma Wright of Lindsay, Ont., scored two goals apiece for Canada with singles to Rebekka Steenkamer of Ottawa and Alexa Tielmann of Abbotsford, B.C.
It was Canada’s only loss of the tournament in seven games. The Canadians led 3-­‐1 after a quarter but trailed 5-­‐4 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Americans increased their lead to 7-­‐4 before Wright struck twice in 20 seconds to make it 7-­‐6 with 2:08 remaining.
Brazil defeated Mexico 15-­‐10 for the bronze. Puerto Rico was fifth and Venezuela sixth.
In the men’s final, Brazil upset the U.S., 10-­‐7 for the gold. In the bronze medal game, Canada had their hands full with Colombia but prevailed 9-­‐8. David Lapins of Gatineau scored the winning goal with eight seconds remaining.
Lapins finished the game with three markers as did Devon Thumwood of Calgary. Russell Lenferna of Regina added two and Maxime Gallant of Montreal scored once. Canada trailed 3-­‐1 after a quarter, 6-­‐3 at the half and 6-­‐4 after the three.
“The tournament ended on a high note,” said Lenferna. “ It has been a long journey, and a tough one. We're a little disappointed about our loss against the States in the semi final game, but it took a lot for our boys to come back and win the bronze medal game.
Canada opened the fourth with four goals in less than five minutes to lead 8-­‐6. The Colombians scored twice in 50 seconds to tie the match with only 22 seconds remaining before Lapins heroics.
“The experience has been great for all of us, and though we aren't finishing on top, we are finishing a hard fought tournament that none of us can have regrets about,” added Lenferna.
Venezuela was fifth, Trinidad and Tobago sixth, Mexico seventh, Puerto Rico eighth, Argentina ninth, and Peru 10th.

Le Canada gagne les médailles d’argent et de bronze aux championnats panaméricains juniors de water-­‐polo
MONTRÉAL – Le Canada a gagné la médaille d’argent chez les femmes et celle de bronze chez les hommes, samedi, aux championnats panaméricains juniors (M19) de water-­‐polo de l’UANA.
Dans la finale féminine, les É.-­‐U. ont remporté une victoire de 7-­‐6 contre les Canadiennes. Michelle Caron, de Montréal, et Emma Wright, de Lindsay, en Ontario, ont marqué deux buts chacune et Rebekka Steenkamer, d’Ottawa, et Alexa Tielmann, d’Abbotsford, en C.-­‐B., ont complété la marque.
C’est la seule défaite du Canada en sept matches dans le tournoi. Les Canadiennes menaient 3-­‐1 après un quart, mais tiraient de l’arrière 5-­‐4 après trois quarts. Dans le quatrième quart, les Américains ont porté leur avance à 7-­‐4 avant que Wright ne marque deux fois en 20 secondes pour réduite l’écart à 7-­‐6 avec 2:08 à jouer.
Le Brésil a défait le Mexique 15-­‐10 pour obtenir la médaille de bronze. Porto-­‐Rico a terminé cinquième et le Venezuela sixième.
Dans la finale masculine, le Brésil a surpris les É.-­‐U. 10-­‐7 pour remporter la médaille d’or. Dans le match pour la médaille de bronze, le Canada a eu les mains pleines avec la Colombie, mais a eu le dessus 9-­‐8. David Lapins, de Gatineau, a réussi le but vainqueur avec huit secondes à jouer.
Lapins a terminé le match avec trois buts, tout comme Devon Thumwood, de Calgary. Russell Lenferna, de Regina, en a ajouté deux et Maxime Gallant, de Montréal, un. Le Canada tirait de l’arrière 3-­‐1 après le premier quart, 6-­‐3 à la demie et 6-­‐4 après trois quarts.
«Le tournoi a pris fin sur une bonne note, a dit Lenferna. Ce fut une longue aventure et une difficile. Nous sommes un peu déçus de la défaite contre les États-­‐Unis en demi-­‐finale, mais les gars se sont montrés forts en revenant et en gagnant le match pour la médaille de bronze.
Le Canada a entrepris le quatrième quart avec quatre buts en moins de cinq minutes pour prendre les devants 8-­‐6. Les Colombiens ont riposté deux fois en 50 secondes pour niveler le match avec seulement 22 secondes à jouer, avant l’exploit de Lapins.
«L’expérience a été excellente pour nous tous et même si nous ne terminons pas en tête, nous terminons un tournoi chaudement disputé et aucun d’entre nous n’a de regrets», a ajouté Lenferna.
Le Venezuela s’est classé cinquième, Trinidad et Tobago sixième, le Mexique septième, Porto-­‐Rico huitième, l’Argentine neuvième et le Pérou 10e.
