The AUTHOR
Mathieu Le Maux
Mathieu Le Maux has been the French GQ’s sports
editor since 2011. He also appears on French television
(BeIN Sports) and on various radio shows. He’s both a
running fanatic - he published The Running Dictionary
(Flammarion) in october - and a sneaker-head
he owns more than 300 pairs.

depuis 1917, cette chaussure de basketteur est
la première sneaker de l’Histoire. Un passeport

L’ADN de base
de la All Star
n’a pas changé
depuis 1949.
Dessinée par une marque alors spécialiste de la botte et de la
chaussure de chantier flairant l’essor du basket-ball aux ÉtatsUnis, la Converse All-Star doit beaucoup à son ambassadeur
éponyme, Charles H. Taylor, alias « Chuck », dont la griffe
orne la célèbre pastille étoilée depuis 1932. Fasciné par le
modèle d’origine - marron et non noir, comme on le croit
souvent - ce basketteur de 20 ans rejoint la « team » de la
marque, les Converse All-Stars, en 1921 et en devient le meilleur
ambassadeur à travers le pays. Deux ans plus tard, ce très
dévoué VRP invente le fameux patch conçu pour protéger la
malléole interne des colosses aux chevilles d’argile. Adoubées
jusqu’aux années 70 pour leur souplesse et leur solidité par les
stars des parquets (Magic Johnson, Larry Bird), les « Chucks
» séduisent les étudiants californiens comme les ouvriers de
General Motors dès les années 50, puis les fans de skate et de
BMX (années 80) et enfin les
stars de la musique comme
Kurt Cobain, Iggy Pop ou Snoop
Doggy Dog dix ans plus tard.

Nike Air
Une semelle
gonflée
Depuis près de 30 ans, les mots Nike et « Air » sont synonymes et
inséparables. Si le 26/03/87 a marqué les débuts de l’épopée de la
Air Max, ce parcours a en fait commencé dix ans auparavant, avec
un ingénieur en aérospatiale appelé Frank Rudy et son idée géniale.
Au cours d’une visite du siège mondial de Nike, Frank Rudy a donné
à Phil Knight une paire de chaussures de course équipées d’un
prototype de coussin d’air, et on connaît la suite…
Après de nombreux essais, le concept de Frank Rudy a été intégré
au modèle Air Tailwind en 1978. Le lancement de ce modèle a
révolutionné l’industrie de la course à pied, mais son véritable impact
n’a été ressenti que près d’une décennie plus tard. L’air était resté un
mystère, jusqu’à ce que le célèbre designer, Tinker Hatfield, ait une
révélation.
« Si nous découpons une partie de la semelle intermédiaire et
exposons le coussin d’air de façon à ce qu’il soit visible, les gens
comprendront le principe », avait expliqué Tinker Hatfield.
S’inspirant de ce concept, Mark Parker et Tinker Hatfield ont créé des
prototypes, des échantillons et enfin la Air Max
1, une basket qui allait marquer la rencontre de
l’innovation et du style.
