Première soirée
Le magnétisme de Saint-Affrique poursuit son mystérieux
rayonnement : près de 200 participants dont un grand nombre de
récidivistes. Tout au plus pouvait-on noter d’infimes variations ;
le handballeur Yannick n’arborait plus le maillot des fouteballeurs
du Barça mais le souite des rugbymans All Blacks. Allait-il durcir
son jeu ? Confronté au début Andersen (1.a3), il ne s’en laissa
pas conter.
Seule terrible absence, Corinne Planchon ; révélée à ellemême par le tournoi de pétanque de l’an passé, elle se livre corps
et âme à sa nouvelle vocation au point qu’elle en délaisse les
échecs et sa partenaire historique, Christine Flear, désespérée.
C’est un peu Laurel sans Hardy, Jacob sans Delafon, médecins
sans frontières ou Stéfan San Sévérino.
La première ronde se déroula dans une atmosphère studieuse et recueillie, soulignée par les effets sédatifs de la gastronomie locale. Quelques bâillements postprandiaux discrètement
étouffés précisaient l’origine de cette puissante concentration.
Peu à peu, le principe des vases communicants emplit la

Alain Herrero…[Notons que les 3 points de suspension en disent toujours
long...Ndlr], fondateur du club de Saint-Affrique et de l’open qui attire de très
nombreux joueurs issus de divers horizons. Dès la 1° édition, en 1993, plus de
160 joueurs étaient venus dans la vilotte alors qu’il n’y avait pas internet pour
se faire connaître !
À quel âge as-tu débuté les échecs ?
J’ai appris à jouer assez tard, j’ai d’abord été «un joueur de café », avec des
amis de l’École Normale, nous nous amusions dans des bistrots ruthénois.
Ensuite en 1982-1983, vers l’âge de 30 ans, j’ai fondé le club de Saint-Affrique
avec un professeur de philosophie au lycée, Monsieur Zarrouati. C’est le club de
rugby de Saint-Affrique qui nous a hébergé dans leur club house [ce n’est pas
du ruthénois, mais de l’angliche. car GG a des lettres. Ndlr] (au 3° étage de la
salle des Fêtes à l’époque) et j’ai acheté les premiers jeux pour le club car à
l’époque nous n’avions pas de subventions.
Quel est ton meilleur classement, ta meilleure performance ?

Mon meilleur classement est autour de 2000 Elo et ma victoire la plus prestigieuse est contre le maître Olivier Touzane en partie longue lors du tournoi de
Chanac (Lozère).
Quel est ton joueur préféré et pourquoi ? [Parce que ! Ndlr]
J’apprécie particulièrement le style de Karpov, c’est un joueur d’une exceptionnelle longévité et extrêmement complet [Tout comme GG !! Ndlr]. D’ailleurs, je
l’ai rencontré lors du tournoi du Cap d’Agde [Et ç’est qu’il fréquente du beau
monde !!! Ndlr], il ne connaissait pas Saint-Affrique, par contre il était un grand
amateur de Roquefort.
Quelle est ton ouverture préférée ?
Avec les blancs, je joue d4 et avec les noirs, souvent Cf6… le reste, c’est secret
[de Polichinelle...Ndlr] ! Je joue pour m’amuser et me maintenir en forme…
[Trop fort ! ] Ce jeu est vraiment extraordinaire pour développer des capacités
intellectuelles, notamment l’esprit de décision et la capacité de faire des choix,
des aptitudes qui ne sont pas vraiment enseignées dans notre système scolaire.
[Y cause trop bien ! Je m’incline. Chapeau bas, Monsieur Herrero !]
Quel est ton meilleur souvenir échiquéen ?
C’est le titre de championne de France de Valérie Bénézech au championnat de
France semi-rapide à Lyon dans la catégorie pupille, elle avait aussi fini 6° au
classement général mixte. Certaines équipes jeunes du club ont aussi obtenu
d’excellents résultats au niveau national.
Quels souvenirs te viennent à l’esprit quand tu penses à une édition précédente de l’open ?
L’ambiance lors de certains tournois, avec deux temps forts : le vendredi soir
avant le tournoi et lors de la soirée de clôture. J’étais accompagné de quelques
vedettes au Chat qui dort [Tu parles qu’il devait dormir le chat!!!] : Fourche,
Deveau et compagnie…[Oh nuit saint-affricaine, que n’as-tu pas entendu...]
