// Description
Lo cated in a unique eco system in the heart o f the argan tree Tamanar, this small ho tel o perates auto no mo usly (water, energy,
waste, vegetable garden) .A o riginally a white cube ... drilled, dug and pro cessed, it no w o ffers a fun and flexible architecture,
inspired by the Land Art and Berber habitat. It demo nstrates that auto no my is po ssible everywhere, even in desert climates
where water is scarce.
In a regio n that did no t fo llo w the stages o f develo pment, as defined by the Wo rld Bank, but rather po o r o r peo ple live in
relative auto no my, we decided to try a "glo bal and lo cal" pro ject, based and aro und a standard co untry ho use, which wo uld
allo w a real impro vement in the quality o f life by maintaining the facto rs o f auto no my, the vario us facets o f lo cal culture and the
existing so cial structure. Skip a fo rmer lifestyle became so mewhat adapted to mo dern requirements (due to migratio n o f
yo ung peo ple to big cities) to a new mo del respectful o f what characterizes the "culture" lo cal and inco rpo rating less arduo us
and practices that respect the eco system o f the regio n. We tried to preserve the ancestral strengths o f lo cal architecture by
grafting "attributes" techno lo gy and architecture allo ws co mplete independence (water, energy, waste management, vegetable
pro ductio n, access to info rmatio n), reductio n and o ptimizatio n o f daily tasks (o ften falling to wo men). All o f co urse adapted
financially to the investment capabilities o f the inhabitants o f the regio n.

After the city auto no my (self Urban Habitat, medina o f Rabat), we wanted to test the rural and auto no my thro ugh a ho tel
structure and allo w the public to beco me familiar with different metho ds auto no my. We cho se this time a very dry enviro nment
to sho w that auto no my can be achieved anywhere, if we integrate the lo gic o f lo cal natural cycles. In a regio n that did no t fo llo w
the stages o f develo pment, as defined by the Wo rld Bank, rather po o r but where peo ple live in relative auto no my, we decided

De script io n archit e ct urale : This small ho tel in the argan fo rest, is iso lated in a very arid eco system (20 0 mm rainfall).
The ho tel includes 5 bedro o ms, a co mmunal space, a kitchen, 2 dry to ilets, 2 sho wer areas, a patio and a po o l. An adjo ining
kitchen garden pro vides vegetables. The water table is lo cated at 30 0 m depth, the entire water supply co mes fro m the reco very
o f rain water in two tanks dug in the gro und. The treated gray water is fully recycled in garden watering water by auto mated drip
system. Co mpo st (pro duct o f dry to ilets and all o rganic kitchen waste) is the o nly fertilizer garden. Architecturally, the building
clo sed, resembles the traditio nal ho uses o f the area, sleek white cube, but gradually unfo lds when it reveals always different
facades. It wo rks as a great piece o f furniture with multiple drawers thick shutters, cano pies o r to ilet cubicles, drawbridge, o ffice
o r sitting: all these elements ro tate, mo ve o r tilt to create multiple spatial co nfiguratio ns. At a certain degree o f mo bility is the
same architecture that is no t identifiable: it changes co nstantly to match the mo o d o f the o ccupant. It beco mes a representatio n
no t o f herself, fro zen in the unique visio n o f its creato r, but really the user's time. Fun and functio nal, this architecture do es
mo re that ho sting the user, it calls him, questio ned him, reacted and ultimately makes him feel alive. Metho ds fo r auto no my: Walls very high thermal inertia (earth and sto ne) -Iso latio n o f co rk ro o f insulatio n -Presence large remo vable flaps (the wall
thickness) fo r each o pening -Reco very rainwater in 2 tanks (9 0 m3) to po wer the entire building after filtratio n and UV treatment

Et si c'é t ait à re f aire ? : The pro ject lo cated in iso lated site, after a 7km track and away fro m an urban center, the site has
no t been easy. It was no t easy to bring in business lo cally. We had to do a lo t o f things o urselves and wo rk with lo cal wo rkers.
But the result is abo ve expectatio ns. All systems, auto no my and to tal co mfo rt in the depths o f co rn! ... And Felfla o ffers us
everyday architectural emo tio ns.
Opinio n de s o ccupant s : All peo ple who have stayed at Felfla leave generally enthusiastic and co nvinced o f this
appro ach. Many are surprised the indo o r thermal co mfo rt during heavy summer heat (40 ° C).

Rainwater is sto red in two undergro und tanks. The first existing, reco vers rainwater o n the ro o f o f the ho use (16 0 m²) and a
paved area o f
150 sqm. The seco nd has been added as well as 6 0 0 m² co llectio n surface. A year may pass witho ut rain,
we had to scale the tank in o rder to have a water reserve o f 2 years, in case o f dro ught.

Co nf o rt & sant é : In this regio n where the climate is harsh (the summer very ho t, co ld night, windy ...) yo u realize ho w
the inertia o f the building is impo rtant. As so o n as o ne enters the ho use, thermal co mfo rt o ne feels, it's co ld o r ho t o utside,
it is inside. The shutters systems / gates o f the same thickness as the walls (40 cm) enable many light input co mbinatio ns
thanks to their adjustable po sitio ning. The o penings and o penings o ffer views and ho rizo ns co nstantly changing.
