Some facts on the new VIB-gmo-maize-crop
Some facts on the new VIB-gmo-maize-crop This is a brief collection of Facts and sources around the new gmo project that will probably start in 2012. The Press release The biosafety application paper The public consultation The product: Zea mays (Maize) – Trait: Altered growth characteristic resulting from the introduction of a Ga20Oxidase-1 gene It is a corn that they hope will give higher yields. The trial: The trial will commence end of April or begin May 2012 and will end october 2014. On ILVO-fields in Wetteren. ---- A quick view, with some remarks, on the technical dossier, can be found in Annex I. The VIB press release states : “Met het experiment wil VIB nagaan of de maïsplanten ook onder normale landbouwomstandigheden hoger worden en of ze dichter bij elkaar kunnen worden geplant. “ So, in the application paper, almost nothing is mentioned about the use of corn as biomass/biofuel. But the 'biotechnology for a sustainable economy' or 'Ghent Bio Economy' is all about this... We read: “This Multidisciplinary Research Partnership is focusing on the synergistic interaction between green and white biotechnology that is expected to lead to substantial scientific progress in the transition from the present fossil-based economy to a biobased economy.” / ““This research project is highly multidisciplinary in nature and covers fundamental and basic research, demonstration activities such as field trials and pilot plant tests, as well as societal aspects. “ “The carbon negative biobased economy involves the full interplay of green and white biotechnology to efficiently produce a wide range of biobased products and biofuels such as bioethanol and biogas. “ And moreover: “The carbon negative biobased economy can thus become a carbon sequestration technique for counteracting climate change on this planet. “ ---- You can find more on the Biotechnology for a Sustainable Economy in annex II. Ghent Bio Economy ('science') works together with Ghent Bio Energy Valley ('industry and policy'). This organisation has been lobbying in recent years to get a guarantee from the government to buy fixed amounts of biodiesel. And they've got it. They work closely together with the Biotech Valley (technologiepark in Zwijnaarde), and with soy giant Cargill, feed firm Vanden Avenne, and many others, in the Harbour of Ghent. And they are quite ambitious. ---- More on Ghent Bio Energy Valley, and the big firms behind it, you can find in Annex III It is well known that a lot of the recent research into biotech, is the quest for, and political approval of, 'climate ready genes'. The research on these genes is for two thirds in the hands of BASF and Monsanto, that together do a thorough and well financed research (more then a billion dollar) on this. In the VIB, the search for 'climate genes' is also one of the spearheads, and one of the main focuses in its intense collaboration with BASF. (see elsewhere). 'Climate ready genes' are all about resistance to drough, salt, cold, stress, and the ultimate goal: 'yield increasing genes'. Stuff to combat climate change. Unfortunately, not much succes so far. More info and insights on the 'climate ready genes' and the industry behind it, you can find in this excellent piece of the Canadian ETC group, and also in a summary here. The search for 'climate ready genes' is perhaps most pushed from the side of the biomass-industry, as the future maïs 'demonstration field' in Wetteren shows. More insight on the biomass-biotech-industry, that consists of some big chemical companies, can be find in this paper from ETC. It's a big chunk, but by typing 'basf' in the search pad, you can already get an idea of what BASF is up to. And it's NOT about feeding the world. We're talking biofuels, and biomass here, the single biggest threat to hunger in the world. Although the industry constantly claims they merely want to manage organic 'waste', and have no extra impact on the earth's ecosystem and on world hunger, the reality shows completely otherwise. 'Waste' will never suffice for their global shift to biomass chemistry and biofuels. Still, the industry wants to sell it as 'the only sustainable option'. ETC warns: “The Gene Giants are leveraging the climate crisis to win monopoly control of key crop genes and gain public acceptance of genetically engineered seeds. Instead of focusing on policies to dramatically cut consumption of fossil fuels and assist farmers with community-controlled breeding strategies, the corporate agenda focuses on proprietary, high-tech seeds that will be neither accessible nor suitable for the vast majority of the world’s farmers. Genetically engineered, climate-ready crops are a false solution to climate change and the patent grab must be stopped.” (pg 33) In their document on the biomass industry, ETC states: “Having failed to predict the collapse of the dot com bubble, the sub-prime mortgage bubble, the food price spike and the collapse of the banking system – all in one decade – OECD states now tout a new “Green Economy” as the “next big thing” that will rescue their industries. In doing so they are creating a new mythology around the notion that living biomass can be harnessed for a new industrial revolution that will maintain current levels of production and consumption without harming the planet. This kinder, gentler economic colonialism needs the global South’s soil and water. It is being made to look like a technological gift that will let Africa, Asia and Latin America profit from climate change. In the process, the bioeconomy could destabilize commodity markets – and concentrate OECD power – based on a resource that may collapse from overuse.” (pg 62) ---- Annex IV quotes people from UN, FAO, WB, EU on the dangers of subsidizing biofuels, and it's relationship with increasing food prices and world hunger. In a press statement of 2008, we find the announcement of yet another three year scientific collaboration between BASF Plant Science (a former spin off of VIB), and VIB. Here we find: “BASF Plant Science and VIB (the Flanders Institute for Biotechnology) today signed a major cooperation agreement. The focus is on plant genetic mechanisms that increase yield and improve tolerance to environmental stress such as drought and cold. This is the third research project, in which BASF Plant Science and the VIB Department of Plant Systems Biology, UGent join forces: earlier this year, both had signed a license agreement on yield increasing genes and extended an existing cooperation project, which aims to optimize the growth process of corn roots to enhance nutrient and water absorption. “ A lot of questions can be raised. – Who will commercialize this new gmo corn crop, if it will be authorised? – What is the role of BASF and Monsanto behind the scenes? – How is it possible that a lot of positive projects to combat climate change, ar indirectly supporting this biotech 'field trial'? – Is it a field trial, or more a 'demonstration field'? – Who is profiting from this? Who are the stakeholders? – Is development of this crop a step in the right direction? – Is the bar-gene authorised? – What will the Advisory Council for Biosafety say? – What will be the outcome of the public consultations? – Which non profit organisations will try to do something around issue? On the info fiche of Bioro, partner in the project, I read this, as an nice explanation about the logic and interests at play: “België is een pionier van de biogebaseerde economie. “ To be continued... REMARK: ((René Custers was also the communication responsible of the potato field trial)) A3. REMARK ((no mentioning of biomass or biofuels)) De maïslijn GA20OX1 is gemaakt door middel van Agrobacterium tumefaciens gemedieerde transformatie. REMARK:((the bar-gene is a kind of RR-gene, a herbicide tolerant gene (perhaps banned in EP, according to wikipedia, in 2009?)) ((On page 6 of the application form, you find a list of all the (trans)genes inserted.)) So the RR-gene stays active in the test phase on the field, but will not be tested.)) (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabidopsis))) ((prof Geert De Jaeger and others are studying this plant for years on Ghent University)) This part can be interesting too: "Wanneer de planten in een serre gegroeid worden, vertonen ze het volgende fenotype: - Langere, maar smallere bladeren (de ‘leaf elongation rate’ in de ‘steady state’ groei is sterk verhoogd). ((So the altered gene hasn't yet proved any true yield increase...)) ((and there's a first mention of the possible commercial importance of corn sticks as biomass)) Page 15-16 is about the small chance of horizontal gene transfer of the special gene in the corn plant to it's environment. ((so maximum 20 by 25 metres)) G. INFORMATIE OVER PLANNEN VOOR BEHEERSING, CONTROLE, FOLLOW-UP EN AFVALBEHANDELING G1. And then: "G6. ANNEX II Biotechnology for a Sustainable Economy / Ghent BioEconomy On the site of Biotechnology for a Sustainable Economy we can read: “The project Biotechnology for a sustainable economy (Ghent Bio-Economy) of Ghent University is a multidisciplinary partnership (MRP) involving 13 professors at Ghent University from the Faculties of Bioscience Engineering, Sciences, Economics and Business Administration, Law, Arts and Philosophy and 1 professor at the University of Antwerp at the faculty of Biology. This Multidisciplinary Research Partnership is focusing on the synergistic interaction between green and white biotechnology that is expected to lead to substantial scientific progress in the transition from the present fossil-based economy to a biobased economy. Plant (green) biotechnology on the one hand is important for the primary production of biomass through the genetic improvement of crops. Industrial (white) biotechnology on the other hand is involved in the conversion of these renewable resources into a wide range of bioproducts, biomaterials and biofuels.” “The consortium has 13 promoters from 5 faculties at Ghent University and University of Antwerp and will be linked with the IOF consortium Ghent Bio-Energy Valley and ILVO. “ “The partnership intends to reach a high degree of collaboration through a single visionary research project of high societal and economic relevance, i.e. the development of a carbon negative biobased economy. “ “This research project is highly multidisciplinary in nature and covers fundamental and basic research, demonstration activities such as field trials and pilot plant tests, as well as societal aspects. “ “The carbon negative biobased economy involves the full interplay of green and white biotechnology to efficiently produce a wide range of biobased products and biofuels such as bioethanol and biogas. “ “All remaining recalcitrant parts of the biomass are then thermochemically converted into biochar, a kind of charcoal that is returned to agriculture as a fertiliser and soil improver. “ “Contrary to nearly all human activities that add CO2 to the atmosphere, this system actually reduces the CO2 concentration. Since agriculture is a massive human activity that is applied on a worldwide scale, this can significantly reduce global warming. The carbon negative biobased economy can thus become a carbon sequestration technique for counteracting climate change on this planet. “ Please check the link to get some more insight on the goals of this 'partnership'. Pictures of people active within Ghent Bio Economy More on the research and structure of Ghent Bio Economy ANNEX IV SOME ARGUMENTS WHY BIOFUELS ARE NOT A SOLUTION, AND STIMULATE WORLD HUNGER. The Special Rapporteur is gravely concerned that biofuels will bring hunger in their wake. The sudden, ill-conceived, rush to convert food — such as maize, wheat, sugar and palm oil — into fuels is a recipe for disaster. There are serious risks of creating a battle between food and fuel that will leave the poor and hungry in developing countries at the mercy of rapidly rising prices for food, land and water. If agro-industrial methods are pursued to turn food into fuel, then there are risks that unemployment and violations of the right to food may result, unless specific measures are put in place to ensure that biofuels contribute to the development of small-scale peasant and family farming. Instead of using food crops, biofuels should be made from non-food plants and agricultural wastes, reducing competition for food, land and water." On 2 May 2008, in the background note to his call for a special session of the UN Human Rights Council, he pointed to the demand for agrofuels as one determining factor in the current crisis. He underlined that it would be impossible to make agrofuels an alternative to fossil fuel due to the sheer size of feedstock that would require, and that the impact of agrofuels on the environment has been shown to be negative. In this connection he referred tostudies by Fargione and by Crutzen."
