Descriptiondusujet: The goal of the project is to participate in developing a new numerical code to allow simulations of drug deliverybyacapsulesuspendedinthebloodflow.Capsulesareclosedelasticmembranes(similartoabag) thatencapsulateandprotectanactiveagent(forexample, adrug)andtransportit.Theycanbedesignedto reach specific target points in the human body like a cancerous tumour and release their internal content (thecure).Theoutcomeoftheprojecthasapplicationsinmedicineandpharmaceuticalindustry. The objective of the project is to use state-of-the-art numerical techniques to model the problem of drug deliverybyacapsuleinthebloodflow.Thelatterisgovernedbythecouplingbetweenthebloodflowthat transportsanddeformsthecapsule, thecapsulewall, whichreactsbackuponitssurroundingfluids(inner andouterfluids)andthemasstransportacrossthemembrane.Thefluid-structurecouplingisaccomplished using the Immersed Boundary Method (IBM). The capsule membrane deformation is computed using the Finite Element Method (FEM). The fluid flows and the drug diffusion are computed using the LatticeBoltzmannMethod(LBM). Withinthisproject, thestudentwillparticipateinthedevelopmentofthenumericalcodeandvalidationof the newly implemented numerical schemes. She/he will have the opportunity to take responsibility for her/his own scientific research problem (think about a problem and find solutions, perform research, analyzeandinterpretresultsandwriteascientificreport).Thestudentwillalsolearnaboutbiofluidsand thenumericaltechniquestomodelmechanicalproblemsinvolvingfluid-structureinteractions.
