Viens danser is a behavioural and interactive choreographic installation which comes in the shape of a large screen facing the spectators, with an empty space in front of it representing a dance floor. The screen shows a blue world inhabited by some one hundred white entities, reminiscent of organic marine creatures such as jellyfish and sea anemones. They move into a corps de ballet-like formation, moving from one state to another according to the spectators’ behaviour. If they move closer, the entities see them and move apart as if they were making space for them to join in. Thus begins a relationship between the spectators and the entities, who react to the spectators’ presence according to their movements, their speed and synchronicity, thus reflecting the “quality” of the spectators’ presence. Depending on what movements the installation likes or ignores, the spectators are led to perform some rather than others, thus exploring various energy modes. They are eventually “directed” by the installation, a vehicle for issues relating to corporality, central to Catherine Langlade’s work. The installation enables her to direct a spectators’ choreography. After training as a classical and contemporary dancer (with C. Carlson, C. Gérard and S. Sugihara, to name but a few), Catherine Langlade went on to train DISPOSITIF Option 1 at the CNDC (National centre for contemporary dance) in Angers with Alwin Nikolaïs. Alongside being a performer (with Beau-Geste and Découfflé), she co-founded the Lolita Danse group in 1982, and in 1990 started her own company, Spid’eka, which explores the relationship between the dancer’s body and projected images. A first choreography in 1990 - Le ninas et le papillon – incorporated a treated video capture of the dancer, which was simultaneously broadcast on a screen. This image/dancer partnership has since then been a recurrent theme in her creations, which increasingly involve digital technology.
