Montréal, August 24, 2015 – Gérard Oury’s irresistible comedy La Folie des Grandeurs (1971) will
open the 2015 edition of the Éléphant ClassiQ film festival on the evening of November 19. First
event of its kind in Canada, Éléphant ClassiQ: films that made cinematic history is a four-day
celebration of the splendours of restored cinema.
The screening La Folie des Grandeurs, a popular comedy starring Louis de Funès, Yves Montand and
Alice Sapritch, coincides with the 120th anniversary of the Gaumont studio. The history of the
legendary production house with the daisy logo extends back to the origins of cinema. Nicolas
Seydoux, its current president, and director Danièle Thompson, co-screenwriter of La Folie des
Grandeurs and the daughter of director Gérard Oury, will introduce the film.
Spotlight on Québec cinema
The first edition of Éléphant ClassiQ will feature French-language movies. Québec films figure
prominently on the program. The world premiere of the newly restored version of Entre la mer et
l'eau douce (1967), Michel Brault’s first feature film, will be shown. Many members of the film’s cast,
including Geneviève Bujold, Claude Gauthier, Robert Charlebois, Louise Latraverse and Denise
Bombardier, will be present.
About Éléphant ClassiQ
Éléphant ClassiQ’s mission is to bring audiences the best restored films from Québec and abroad.
The festival will be held on November 19-22 in three Montréal theatres: the Imperial Cinema, Salle
Claude-Jutra at the Cinémathèque québécoise, and Salle Pierre-Bourgault at UQAM.
Éléphant ClassiQ’s 2015 edition will focus on French-language films, including restored films from
France, Belgium, Switzerland, Vietnam, Africa and Québec. The movies will be shown with English
subtitles. The festival will also feature master classes and opportunities to meet distinguished film
industry people. Young people will have a chance to discover restored versions of classic movies on
the big screen and the not-so-young to relive cherished memories. The Éléphant ClassiQ festival is
presented in partnership with the Université du Québec à Montréal and in cooperation with the
Cinémathèque québécoise.
