Welcome to H-Canada, H-Net’s Network for Canadian history and studies.
The H-Canada Network: Scope, Content, Purpose.
The purpose of H-Canada is to provide a forum discussing the history of Canada and other
related subjects (sociology, political studies, literature, women's studies, Canadian studies
etc). There are no chronological or topical limits. H-Canada is a bilingual (French and
English) discussion list. Messages are posted in the language in which they were sent.
Subscription is free, and subscribers will automatically receive messages in their computer
mailboxes. Messages can be saved, discarded, copied, printed out, or relayed to someone
else. It is like a daily newsletter or an ongoing, moderated "roundtable" discussion.
The primary purpose of H-Canada is to stimulate dialogue among scholars who study
Canadian history. H-Canada enables scholars in history and related disciplines to:
communicate current research and research interests; discuss new articles, books, papers,
approaches, methods, and tools of analysis; and test new ideas, and share comments and
tips on teaching.
II. Editors.
H-Canada is edited by field experts approved by the network board and certified by H-Net’s
Executive Council. The editors serve two-year renewable terms and rotate their duties.
Editors are listed in the Network Staff List linked from the network’s front page. The editors
will solicit postings through the Commons, will approve new subscriptions, will handle
routine inquiries, and and manage submissions. Anyone with suggestions about what HCanada can and might do is invited to send in ideas by writing to the editorial address. The
editors will solicit and post newsletter-type information (calls for conferences, for example,
or listings of sessions at conventions.) Like all H-Net networks, H-Canada is moderated to
edit out material that, in the editors' opinion, is not germane to the network mission,
involves technical matters (such as subscription management requests), is inflammatory,
or violates evolving, yet common, standards of Internet etiquette. Please read section III
below for details about ownership, style, formatting, and content of your messages. H-Net's
procedure for resolving disputes over editorial practices is Article II, Section 2.02 of our
council policies, located at:

III. Communicating Through the Network.
A. Copyright notice. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. H-Net considers all messages posted to its
forums to be a form of publication. Unless otherwise arranged with H-Net, all contributions
to H-Canada are subject to H-Net’s Terms of Use and its policies concerning copyright and
intellectual property, Art. III, Sec. 3.01-3.08 of the H-Net Council Policies. Use of this site
constitutes acceptance of H-Net's terms of use. Users of the site verify that they are
authorized by copyright holders to submit content to H-Net for publication according to

B. Contributions: The tone and content of H-Canada depends directly on subscribers. The
editors want to encourage lively, informal, productive discussion and exchange of
information. To that end, we ask that contributions be considerate of the needs of a busy
audience of scholars, many of whom must pay for their access to the internet. A number of
excellent guides to online behavior and style are available on the internet and we invite
you consult them.
-- ALL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE NETWORK MUST BE SIGNED. If your profile on the H-Net
Commons is not filled out with a valid name and affiliation the editors will delay posting
until authorship and email address are confirmed.
-- CONTENT: Editors retain the right to review material for its pertinence, tone, style, and
relevance to the list's mission. Ad hominems, unattributed quotations or innuendo, private
messages forwarded for posting without permission, or messages that violate the norms of
civility and professional courtesy will be rejected. Persistent violators can be removed from
the subscription list. H-Net permanently archives its content on the H-Net
Commons. Do not submit material that you consider to be of a private nature or
that you would not want available to future readers.
-- STYLE: the default editorial style for discussion postings is that of a letter to the editor.
Your remarks can be crafted to suit the tone of an existing discussion thread, but in any
case they should address the editor and not make direct personal references to others,
except where you are replying directly to a simple query (e.g., "you can find this
information in Webster's Third International Dictionary."). Avoid excessive quotation of
messages you refer or reply to.
-- FORMAT: While you can submit your posts to the Commons using various fonts, styles
and formatting these may be edited by the editor for uniformity and readability.
IV. Technical Information.
When you subscribe to the Commons, H-Net will send you a confirmation message
containing important information about managing your subscription. For online help with
your subscription see http://networks.h-net.org/help-desk, especially the “Getting Started”
section. These guides will help you modify your notifications, unsubscribe from the
network, change the e-mail address associated with your profile, and use your “My H-Net”
page effectively. If you still have questions after reading the guides please email

V. The H-Canada Network Site
The H-Canada network site contains the following required information and services:
- The archives of the H-Canada network discussions and other uploaded content
- The network's official documents: its about page, lists of board members and editors,
contact information, and other founding and information documents.
- Hypertext links to resources in our subject: teaching materials, research archives, other
networks.
VI. Advisory Board.
H-Canada's daily activities are managed by the editors. Its long-term policies are developed
by the advisory board. If you are interested in serving on the board, please contact the
current editor. Board members referee incoming articles, reviews, and teaching materials;
establish basic subscription restrictions and policy; advise the editors on disputes among

VII. Our Parent Organization: H-Net
H-Net is an international consortium of scholars in the humanities and social sciences that
creates and coordinates electronic networks, using a variety of media, and with a common
objective of advancing humanities and social science teaching and research. H-Net was
created to provide a positive, supportive, egalitarian environment for the friendly exchange
of ideas and scholarly resources.
The goals of H-NET networks are to enable scholars to easily communicate current research
and teaching interests; to discuss new approaches, methods and tools of analysis; to share
information on electronic databases; and to test new ideas and share comments on the
literature in their fields.

langues officielles du Canada (français et anglais). Les messages sont transmis dans leur langue
d'origine. L'abonnement H-Canada est gratuit; les abonnés reçoivent automatiquement les messages
provenant du réseau; ceux-ci leur sont acheminés dans leur boite aux lettres électronique. L'abonné
peut conserver, détruire, copier, imprimer les messages ou les faire suivre à quelqu'un d'autre.
L'objectif premier de H-Canada est de favoriser le dialogue entre les Canadianistes, historiens ou
spécialistes d'autres disciplines, afin de communiquer des résultats de recherche, de traiter des
domaines de recherche en histoire canadienne, de discuter de communications, de livres, ou
d'articles récents, de même que des problématiques, des méthodes, ou des outils d'analyse; le réseau
servira également à proposer des idées nouvelles et à partager des expériences pédagogiques.
Les co-animateurs du réseau H-Canada sont Harold Bérubé de l’Université de Sherbrooke
([email protected]), et Ioana Teodorescu de l’Université McGill ([email protected]).
Un comité de direction, composé de représentants des différentes tendances de la recherche en
histoire ou en études canadiennes, établit les lignes de conduite du réseau.
1. H-CANADA FAVORISE LES ECHANGES EN HISTOIRE DU CANADA
H-Canada distribue des plans de cours, des notes de cours, des bibliographies, des guides de
rédaction, des listes de nouveaux fonds documentaires, de catalogues de bibliothèques et d'archives.
Le réseau fournit aussi des comptes rendus de logiciels, de CD-ROMs, de même que des évaluations
de corpus de données électroniques. H-Canada fait également circuler des informations sur les
conférences à venir, sur les bourses disponibles et sur les emplois offerts. Les abonnés peuvent
soumettre des questions, offrir des commentaires, ou fournir des rapports sur des sujets pertinents.
Le réseau sert aussi à faire circuler l'information concernant de nouvelles parutions. De plus, HCanada sollicitera des comptes rendus qui seront diffusés par le réseau. Les maisons d'édition qui
publient des manuels d'histoire du Canada sont fortement invitées à participer au réseau, notamment
pour discuter des modifications a apporter aux éditions ultérieures.
2. COMMENT SOUMETTRE UNE CONTRIBUTION A H-CANADA:
Le réseau accepte les questions brèves comme les documents plus longs. Chaque contribution doit
être accompagnée du nom de l'auteur de même que de son adresse électronique; sinon, les
animateurs devront ajouter ces indications aux contributions qui leur parviendront.
3. UNE LISTE "ANIMEE"
Le réseau H-Canada n'aura aucun parti pris politique. Les contributions seront toutes examinées par
les animateurs ; les attaques personnelles ["flames"] et les remarques intempestives ne seront pas
acceptées, non plus que les textes qui ne servent pas à favoriser les échanges de nature
intellectuelle. Toute plainte concernant le travail des animateurs sera soumise au comité de direction,
qui tranchera et communiquera ses décisions aux animateurs. Les décisions du comité de direction
seront finales.
Le rôle des animateurs consiste essentiellement à s'assurer que les contributions soumises à la liste
sont pertinentes. Dans certains cas, il peut s'agir de demandes d'abonnement soumises par erreur au
réseau plutôt qu'au serveur de liste. Dans d'autres cas, les contributions devraient être acheminées

ailleurs ou ne contribuent pas aux échanges intellectuels. Les animateurs ne toucheront pas au
contenu des contributions mais pourront, le cas échéant, modifier l'indication d'objet ("subject line")
et ajouter au message le nom de l'expéditeur. Les coordonnées des animateurs sont:

H-Canada reçoit l'appui de H-Net, du "National Endowment for the Humanities" du gouvernement
américain, de Michigan State University, de même que d'une équipe nombreuse de bénévoles.
L'abonnement est gratuit et la participation n'entraine aucun frais. Les abonnés doivent détenir une
adresse de courrier électronique sur Internet ou BITNET, laquelle est assignée aux professeurs et
étudiants d'université par le service de l'informatique de leur institution. On peut obtenir de ce
service, ou alors de collègues obligeants, des indications sur la façon d'utiliser le courrier
électronique.

8. H-NET
A. H-Net est une entreprise d'envergure internationale qui vise à faciliter le recours à la
communication électronique par les spécialistes des études humaines. H-Net gére des réseaux par
près de 200 spécialistes des études humaines en Amérique du Nord, en Europe et dans la région du
Pacifique. Le "National Endowment for the Humanities" fournit un appui financier à H-Net, qui "loge"
à Michigan State University.
B. H-Net fournit son appui après de 200 réseaux électroniques dans le domaine des études humaines
et des sciences sociales. A l'heure actuelle, les listes ont plus quelque 50 000 abonnés repartis dans
environ 90 pays. Chaque réseau est "animée" par un ou plusieurs spécialistes et est dotée d'un comité
de direction. H-Net a comme objectifs de faciliter l'échange d'information concernant l'enseignement
et la recherche, de favoriser les discussions autour de problématiques et de méthodes nouvelles et
d'outils d'analyse nouveaux, de communiquer des renseignements concernant les bases de données
électroniques, et enfin de faire circuler des idées nouvelles et des commentaires sur la production
historiographique récente. Chaque liste s'intéresse également aux questions qui touchent
l'enseignement dans le domaine auquel elle est consacrée.
Les réseaux ont pour fonction de promouvoir le dialogue intellectuel. Elles font circuler des comptes

logiciels, de bases de données et de disques CD-ROM. Les abonnés sont invités à soumettre des
questions, des commentaires, des comptes rendus, ou même de courts exposés (une ou deux pages).
Les réseaux s'adressent à une clientèle universitaire et les abonnements doivent être approuvés par
les animateurs. Ces derniers vous feront parvenir un bref questionnaire (nom, adresse, domaines de
recherche et d'enseignement). Votre abonnement entrera en vigueur lorsque vous aurez rempli le
questionnaire et que vous l'aurez retourné aux animateurs. La confirmation en parviendra
