Holidays that make a difference
The vast majority of people who visit travel agents to book a holiday start the conversation in the
following way: ‘I'm sick and tired of coping with everyday problems, stress and responsibility. Please send me
somewhere sunny with a clean blue sea, lots of palm trees and friendly locals. I just want to lie down on
a sandy beach with a drink in one hand and some stupid holiday reading in the other.’ In general, people book
holidays to escape from the difficult and enjoy the easy in life. This, however, is not always true.
For a few years now, a new trend has been visible in the modern leisure time industry. It is called
volunteer tourism and it is even more radical than eco-tourism. The aim of volunteer tourists is to not only have
a good time without polluting the environment. Their goal is to actually spend their time off work making
the world a better place. There are more and more companies offering such holidays. For example, you can go
to some African village to help the local community build a school, or you can teach English to poor children
somewhere in South America, or collect some data for an important environmental project in Asia.
But why would anyone wish to spend their free time working hard in places where there are no swimming
pools or evening salsa courses? Marion Smith, manager of the ‘Change the World’ tourist agency, gives
the following answer: ‘Many people have realised that standard holidays offered by most companies are little
more than products to be bought, consumed, and thrown away. They do not really offer any emotional
experiences that would be something to remember. And people want something more. They want to do
something that will mean something for themselves and the people they've helped. After all, volunteer tourism
is all about helping. You help those who need it and they help you to become a better kind of person.’
