Having established himself as a serious automobile manufacturer with the Mangusta coupé, Allesandro De Tomaso
commissioned Lamborghini designer Gianpaolo Dallara to produce the chassis for his new mid-engined supercar,
the Pantera. Styled by Tom Tjaarda at Carrozzeria Ghia, the stunning coupé body was, in fact, built by Vignale, both
companies being part of the De Tomaso s empire in the early 1970s. For a supercar, the Pantera would prove to be
outstandingly long-lived, being introduced in 1971 and continuing in production into the 1990s. The Ford Motor
Company was De Tomaso s partner at the time of its conception, and thus the Pantera, like the Mangusta, relied on
Ford V8 power. The 351ci (5.7-litre) engine varied in output depending on the destination market, and in European
trim came with 330bhp, or 350bhp as installed in the Pantera GTS. Renewed interest in sports car racing s GT
category prompted De Tomaso to develop the GTS (Gran Turismo Speciale) for customers with an inclination to go
racing. Readily recognisable by virtue of its riveted wheelarch extensions and wider wheels, the GTS had a claimed
top speed of 175mph, some 15mph faster than the standard Pantera L.
This left-hand drive De Tomaso Pantera GTS was sold new via the official Benelux importer, Claude Dubois in
Brussels. Described by the vendor as in generally good, original condition, the car has covered circa 43,000
kilometres from new and comes with a quantity of invoices for recent servicing/maintenance, valid roadworthiness
certificate and Belgian Old Timer registration papers.
