Dates of birth and death are very often defined "About" (or in Latin, "Circa"). Many genealogy sites give different birth and death dates for the same person. As a result of this possibility, all Birth, Marriage or Death dates in this diagram are coloured in three ways : 1 - Dates which are "Consolidated" (accepted) are marked in BLACK (i.e. 1031), 2 - Dates which are "Approximate" or "about", are marked in RED (i.e. 1132), 3 - Dates OF BIRTH which are "Guestimations", based upon available dates and estimated generation gaps are marked in BLUE (i.e 1325) ), this person had no known issue. Grandfather, Father and Son See De Lacy Diagram Hugh de Nogent xxxx-xxxx Living in 1254 S7 0983 Living in 1303 NOTES : I have searched everywhere for dates concerning these 11 generations, and I found practically none ! The Baronry of Delvin passed out of the Nugent family to the (Fitz-John) Tuit family when Richard De Nogent had only a daughter (whose name was Rosa). However, the Baronry returned to the Nugent family 6 ? generations later when Katherine Fitz-John married Sir William Nugent. Some of the "De Nogents" settled in Ireland, some returned to England, and some may have returned to France. We have no dates for this period, but the names of each generation appear trustworthy. 0984 Living in 1314 Christopher de Nogent xxxx-xxxx Almericus de Nogent xxxx-xxxx 2031 2044 2046 Sir Robert de Nogent xxxx-xxxx John de Nogent ? xxxx-xxxx 0022 Arnulph de Bellême S 1020-1048 Yves de Bellême xxxx-1070 Hildeburge de Beaumont 1002-1067 1027 Hugh de Nogent xxxx-xxxx ? 0021 Mabel de Bellême M 1024-1079 1048 He burned down his own cathedral 0229 Hugh de Nogent xxxx-xxxx 0024 Agnes de Ponthieu 1080-1108 Emma de Lacy 1082-xxxx 2038 Roger de Montgommery M 1022-1094 Guaszo xxxx-xxxx Robert II de Bellême 1054-1132 2037 V5 W5 0241 0240 Hugh de Nogent I 1152-1213 Theffania xxxx-xxxx 0248 Captured by Henry I, Died in prison 2049 1885 Guillaume III de Talvas 1095-1171 1115 Helie de Bourgogne xxxx-xxxx 0252 Margery xxxx-xxxx Joan Drake xxxx-xxxx Helias II d'Anjou 1114-1151 U7 Alternative 1 2051 John I xxxx-1191 (Count of Alençon) V6 W6 xxxx Béatrix d'Anjou xxxx-xxxx 1115 X6 2048 Hugh de Nogent 1225-xxxx Mabel le Tuit xxxx-xxxx 2 265 0264 Nicolas de Nogent 1265-xxxx ???? xxxx-xxxx Daughter of Thomas le Tuit ? Few documents carry references to Warin, Fulke, Rotrou, Helviza & Jéremie. Kathleen Thompson infers that Fulke, Rotrou and Warin were left "without interest" in the testament of their father Rotrou (where is this information from ?). Were they illegitimate ? Rotrou succeeds by marrying the heiress of Montfort. Although Orderic Vitalis speaks of considerable estates given to the family in England by William (after the Conquest), there is strangely no reference concerning these estates in the Domesday book (1086) . Fulke appears to have the title to Belleme which is rather premature ! Few documents exist concerning the descendants of Fulke de Belleme, who settled in England during the period 1066-1171, although there is ample recorded evidence that they accompanied De Lacy from England to Ireland in 1172. 1870 Helisende de Perche xxxx-xxxx O3 N4 M4 Alice de Warenne 1287-1338 1869 N3 Founded the chateau. As I have long since exceeded 999, I will now have to make major modifications, because all Family Member Numbers have been converted to 4-digit numbers. The independant section of recent Nugents, my direct tree, (see Section 3) has been numbered from 1001 to 1500. So additions to the General Family Tree are numbered from 1501 There are at least 4 major hypotheses explaining how the Châteaudun and the De Nogent lines merged together. N2 V1 My numbering system, although it begins here, does in no way suggest that this is the root of the De Nogent Family. In fact, the De Nogent family, in the early middle ages, was at constant war with the Bellême family (below), and although there may have been tenuous connections somewhere in the history of the two families, it has been shown that the Bellême family was not originally of noble stock, but benefitted from the largesse of the belligerant Normans. On the contrary, the de Nogent family were of noble issue, and throughout several centuries showed their devotion to the Christian faith with their numerous donations to the church. And so, our Nugent Family, as far as we can trace it, began in Vector Page H4, with Rotrou de Nogent (0940-1000) - Family Number 0089. Lieutegardes father was the grandson of Bernard, King of Italy (0797-xxxx), who was the grandson of Charlemagne (0742-xxxx). So the blue blood is there, if somewhat diluted ........ ! Q1 1 - What were the names of the Viscounts of Châteaudun (1 to 4) during the period 930 to 1040 (Pages E3/4 and F3/4). Because of the frequent naming of the Viscounts as Gausfred (Geoffrey) or Hugo (Hughes), and the lack of documentary evidence, there is considerable confusion concerning the early period of the House of Châteaudun, and thus several schools of thought have emerged. 2 - Were there two Mélisendes ? Mélisende of Châteaudun is purported to have been the sister of Hughes (Viscount of Châteaudun), and to have passed the title of Viscount to her son, after marrying Rotrou de Nogent (this can not be so !). But she is also supposed to have married Warin de Domfront. (Abbot of St. Denis) H3 0091 William C5 0211 P1 Two major questions remain. Louis Family (Count of Blois and Chartres) 0054 D5 Hermengarde (de Vergy ?) 915-987 2007 2006 Hugh I de Châteaudun 935-989 Must have died young, before their father 2034 1110 (1st Viscount of Châteaudun) 0084 0085 0083 Geoffrey I de Châteaudun 909-985 (Count of Blois and Chartres) E4 Eudes (Odo) II 983-1037 Mortagne was originally called Corbon, and De Romanet suggests that Corbon was the same as the Perche, so that Counts of Mortagne could legitimately also be termed as Counts of Perche. Later, when the De Nogent family assumed the title of Counts of Perche, although they held or controlled Chateaudun, Mortagne and Nogent, these territories, in fact, constituted less than half of the area of the Perche. O1 U1 The numbering of the De Nogent ancestors begins here at 001, because I had to start somewhere. The numbers were attributed to Family Members as I added them to the diagram, and are not associated with any date, hierarchical importance or Family Branch. Nevertheless, this tree helps to explain how a relatively unimportant family in the Perche began the rise "to princely power", by military prowess, several judicious marriages and sound judgement. This period heralds the birth of a powerful dynasty which controlled the county of Perche for several generations, gradually associating Alençon, Mortagne, Nogent, Gallardon, Bellême, Domfront, and Châteaudun into a power group even more important than that controlled by the King of France. Thus the family "De Nogent" becomes important enough to marry into royalty, become "cousins" of kings, and follow these kings into several centuries of the history of England, Ireland and France. The family name "De Nogent", attributed to the the brothers of Geoffrey II de Mortagne (025) and Hugh de Châteaudun (032) when they arrived in England with William the Conqueror, marks the beginnings of the Nugent dynasty, which found fortune in Ireland with Henry II, more than a hundred years later. Bertha of Holland 1055-1094 J1 Information concerning the early part of the Nugent Family Tree tree is confusing and conflictual. Genealogists have marked areas of the family descent as "Obscure", especially the early "Barons of Delvin". De Romanet proposes that Agombert was count of Pertois (comes Pertencis), Hervé was Count of Mortagne, and Etienne was confused with the Count of Philadelphia (died 1205). 0036 0039 0042 Louis IV 921-986 Emma de Provence 948-987 0037 (King of Wessex) 0275 Geberge of Saxony 915-984 0281 0289 (King of France) Cunigunde de Parme 797-835 Bernard 799-818 I1 816-836 0274 0287 795 0032 0031 0035 A3 Louis I 778-840 Ermengarde d'Hesbaye 778-818 (King of France) (King of France) 0277 However, we are sure of several things : 0028 Illegitimate Eudes I 860-898 Robert I 865-923 0027 Ingeltrude d'Autun 775-xxx Pepin 773-810 0272 0271 Hildegarde de Vintzgau 758-783 771 (King of the Franks) H1 As the naming conventions of this time tended to "hand down" a limited number of names to the descendants, the use of such names such as Rotrou, Rotrude, etc., can often be a pointer to family ties. Unfortunately, it can also be the cause for much confusion, as little information was written in these times, and it was always in Latin. The numbers used for the Geoffreys and the Hughes, Counts of Châteaudun are susceptible to error, as they were often added later by historians. Dates are suspect, and some descendancies are marked "Obscure", especially before the end of the 11th century. 0026 0025 G1 THE NUGENT FAMILY ORIGINS
