Introduction
About the day
On the proposal of ICOMOS, 18 April was endorsed as The International Day for Monuments and Sites by
UNESCO in 1983. This special day offers an opportunity to raise public awareness concerning the diversity
of the world’s heritage and the efforts that are required to protect and conserve it, as well as to draw
attention to its vulnerability. For several years now, ICOMOS suggests a topic to be highlighted on this
occasion. This has allowed our members and our committees to hold activities, conferences, colloquia or
other events to raise awareness on this cultural heritage among the public, the owners or the public
authorities by linking a global theme to local or national realities. Below you will find information received by
the ICOMOS International Secretariat so far on events organised this year by ICOMOS Committees and
other organisations or entities. If you organised an event in your country – please send us the information
for our final report !

À propos de cette Journée
Suite à une proposition de l’ICOMOS, le 18 avril a été désigné Journée internationale des monuments et
des sites par l’UNESCO en 1983. Cette journée particulière offre une occasion de sensibiliser le public à la
diversité du patrimoine dans le monde et aux efforts que requièrent sa protection et sa conservation et
permet également d’attirer l’attention sur sa vulnérabilité. Depuis plusieurs années, l’ICOMOS suggère un
thème à mettre en lumière, à cette occasion. Cela a permis à nos membres et à nos Comités de tenir des
activités, colloques, conférences ou autres manifestations pour sensibiliser les populations, les propriétaires
ou les autorités publiques au patrimoine en reliant un thème mondial aux réalités locales ou nationales. Cidessous vous trouverez les informations reçues par le Secrétariat international de l'ICOMOS à ce jour sur

Events organized by ICOMOS Australia
Western Australia
The day will start at Balladong Farm, York (Avon Tce) which is reputed to be the oldest rural farm in
Western Australia. Having undergone expansion and contraction over the years, the place now comprises a
reconstructed cottage (on 1835 footings) and a group of farm buildings including expansive Stables, a twostorey Granary as well as a Butcher’s Shop and Shearing Shed, constructed in the 1850s and 1870s.
Balladong has also had an interesting history from a heritage perspective. Nerida Moredoundt of Palassis
Architects will give an overview of the history and potential future of this significant site. The visit to
Balladong will be followed by lunch at Jah Roc Café in the 1892 York Flour Mill.
And for those who like their agriculture with a bit of a difference, we will stop at The Ruined Piano Sanctuary
located on Wambyn Olive Farm, 17km from York (Great Southern Highway). As well as over 1300 olive
trees, the property has been ‘planted’ with old pianos now in various states of repair. Visitors are given a
map of the pianos and can stroll through the picturesque grounds and, depending on our numbers; we may
get a tour (and maybe a tinkle) and be able to see the olive processing plant.

Deborah Boden, who is the Co-ordinator, Cornwall & West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site,
will give a Guest Lecture. Deborah will talk about the cultural landscape of the Cornwall & West Devon
Mining Landscape Site, discuss how it exhibits the Outstanding Universal Values that have resulted in its
inscription on the World Heritage List, and discuss examples of some of the strategic initiatives the site’s
managers have undertaken to implement key policy initiatives in the Management Plan. Deborah will also
provide some comments about the proposal for a trans-national serial WHS nomination, "The Frontiers of
Cornish Mining", which includes Burra and Moonta in South Australia, and is in the final planning stages.

The Geelong Heritage Festival
As part of the Trust's celebration of World Heritage Day this April, the Trust’s Geelong Branch will be
staging its own Heritage Festival celebrating the Centenary of the City of Geelong Proclamation in 1910.

Visit historic Gulf Station
Australia ICOMOS will hold a joint event with the National Trust and Heritage Victoria. It will be an open day
at the Trust’s Gulf Station, an 1850s farm in the Yarra Valley. Apart from family-friendly activities for the
general public in line with the theme of agricultural heritage, like a working horses and rare breeds display,
there will be two tours for ICOMOS members. They will cover the interior works and revamped interpretation
of the homestead, and look at the ongoing reconstruction of an 1870s prefabricated building (Croydon
House) recently moved to the site.

Open Day at Bessiebelle sheep wash
In addition some Australia ICOMOS members and friends will be joining colleagues at the National Trust in
Portland, in association with the Gunditjmara people and the Lake Condah Sustainable Development
Project, are holding an open day at the Bessiebelle sheep wash, Tyrendarra. It is scheduled to start at
11.00 am and includes a BYO picnic lunch.

South Australia
(Agri)Cultural heritage
South Australian ICOMITES will celebrate the Day in Adelaide by holding a talk/ drinks event for ICOMOS
members on 19th April. Our speakers will include:
• James Hayter, Landscape Architect, will talk about the problems associated with the loss of agricultural
landscapes due to the crawl of suburbia. Can such landscapes be developed for urban development and
food production at the same time? James will challenge the notion of purely recreational and aesthetic
landscapes and consider the value of landscapes which can also produce food.
• Deborah Bowen, Dip Museum Studies, and Co-ordinator, Cornwall County Council Historic Environment
Service’s Cornwall & West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage site, will provide an update regarding
the proposed World Heritage trans-national nomination of Cornish mine sites, which includes the local
historic mine sites at Moonta and Burra.
• Keith McAllister, of Heritage Stone Restorations will provide a short presentation covering his work in
Wilcannia, New South Wales, where they are teaching the local community basic stone management skills
– to assist them in the future conservation of main street buildings.
We will also have a wine tasting and lots of discussion!

AICOMOS members will join members of The National Trust of Queensland at historic Wolston House for
an evening Soiree. Wolston House is a former stone and brick homestead built in 1852, now owned by The
National Trust, and opened regularly as a house museum. The house is one room in width with rooms
linked by verandahs, with cellar and dairy underneath. The pastoral setting extending out to the Brisbane
River remains substantially intact. During the event there will be a talk about the proposed facilities and
gallery building and its planning at this Heritage Register place.

Programmation à Montréal
Chers hemev d’ICOMOS,
En 1983, l’UNESCO (Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’Éducation, la Science et la Culture), acceptait
la proposition du Conseil international des monuments et des sites (ICOMOS) et déclarait le 18 avril «
Journée internationale des monuments et des sites ». Chaque année, un heme d’intérêt planétaire est
hemev ; par exemple, le patrimoine industriel (2006), les paysages et monuments de la nature (2007), le
patrimoine religieux (2008), le patrimoine des sciences (2009). Le patrimoine de l’agriculture a été retenu
pour 2010.
Pour la seconde année hemevesn, et sous l’égide d’Héritage Montréal en collaboration avec ICOMOS
Canada, différents partenaires ont été réunis pour hemeves un programme d’activités. Des activités
publiques mettront en valeur le passé agricole de la métropole et seront offertes par Héritage Montréal, le
Musée du Château Ramezay, la Ville de Montréal (Bureau du patrimoine et Conseil du patrimoine),
l’Héritage Canadien du Québec et le Centre d’histoire de Montréal.
Le comité francophone d’Icomos Canada vous invite à Montréal pour participer aux sept activités publiques
qui seront offertes au Centre d’Histoire de Montréal (deux activités prévues), à la Réserve des collections
archéologiques de la Ville de Montréal, à la Maison Hurtubise, dans le quartier bâti sur l’ancien Domaine de
la Montagne, au Musée du Château Ramezay, à la Bibliothèque de l’île Bizard.

La collection archéologique hemeves de plus de 200 sites archéologiques recensés sur le domaine
municipal et correspond à près de 3 000 caisses d’objets en boîtes et à plus de 8 000 objets hemevesn la
collection de hemeves. La collection hemeves de site des périodes préhistorique et/ou historique (4000 AD
à ce jour), des occupations amérindiennes, des hemev français et anglais et, de la période industrielle. Les
objets proviennent de sites heme allant de la carrière de heme préhistorique aux complexes agricole,
militaire, commerciaux ou industriels en passant par les occupations domestiques des faubourgs. Mais c’est
aussi bien plus que cela… L’accent de la visite sera mis sur la thématique agriculture (accompagnée de
cartes, plans et iconographies) pour les périodes préhistorique et historique.

Deux hemevesn sur l’architecture présentées par le Bureau du patrimoine de Montréal
Les anciennes maisons de ferme sur l’île de Montréal et l’île Bizard
Un inventaire effectué en 2006 par le Bureau du patrimoine, de la toponymie et de l’expertise de la Ville de
Montréal a permis de documenter quelque 170 anciennes maisons de ferme construites au cours des
XVIIe, XVIIIe et XIXe siècles sur l’île de Montréal et l’île Bizard. Témoins exceptionnels de l’occupation
agricole du territoire montréalais, ces maisons constituent des hemeve distinctifs dans le paysage urbain
actuel, qu’elles soient intégrées dans un milieu urbain dense ou situées encore dans un contexte rural.

Les murets de pierres séparant les champs sont extrêmement bien hemeves dans la zone agricole de l’île
Bizard. Ils témoignent du travail des premiers colons. En plus de leur hem patrimonial, ils jouent un hem
paysager et écologique important.

Le Conseil du patrimoine invite les montréalais à célébrer le patrimoine relié au passé agricole de l¹île en
diffusant sur son site le programme des activités qui vont se dérouler à Montréal autour de ce heme. Il
publie également deux capsules du patrimoine. La première propose des parcours à la découverte des
paysages champêtres de Montréal. La seconde capsule présente des anciennes maisons de ferme situées
sur le territoire montréalais qui ont été citées à titre de monuments historiques.

Tout en approuvant et soutenant cette initiative internationale, la France, qui conduit elle-même de
nombreuses manifestations destinées à faire connaître, comprendre et sauvegarder le patrimoine par nos
concitoyens, ne peut privilégier cette date dans la mesure où elle mobilise très largement chaque année les
propriétaires de monuments, les municipalités, les associations et le public autour de deux autres grands
évènements rituels :
- les Journées européennes du Patrimoine auxquelles participent 49 pays, organisées en France
par le Ministère de la culture et de la Communication, qui tiendront cette année leur 27e édition le
dernier week-end de septembre. En 2009, plus de 15.000 sites français, publics et privés, ont
participé à ces journées en accueillant plus de 11 millions de visiteurs
(www.journéesdupatrimoine.culture.fr).
- la Journée du Patrimoine de Pays – Journée des Moulins, vouée à faire connaître plus
particulièrement le patrimoine rural et donc celui de l’agriculture, qui se tiendra pour sa 13e édition
le 20 juin 2010. Cette journée mobilise chaque année de nombreux organismes et associations,
notamment la fédération Patrimoine-Environnement, Maisons paysannes de France, la Fondation
du Patrimoine, l’Association nationale des Architectes du Patrimoine et la Confédération de
l’Artisanat et des Petites Entreprises du Bâtiment, qui organisent l’animation de 1500 sites (visites
guidées, circuits thématiques, démonstrations de savoir-faire) et accueillent chaque année 200.000
visiteurs sur l’ensemble du territoire français (www.journeedupatrimoinedepays.com)
ICOMOS-France, qui s’intéresse depuis des décennies au patrimoine rural et à sa conservation comme
ressource vivante du développement durable des territoires, soutient activement ces différentes
manifestations. Notre section vient en outre de participer, en novembre et décembre 2009, en liaison avec
ICOMOS-International et Maisons paysannes de France, aux « Assises du monde rural » organisées par le
Ministère de l’Espace rural et de l’Aménagement du Territoire. Elle a réussi à faire insérer parmi les
préconisations issues de cette vaste concertation une trentaine de recommandations visant à sauvegarder
et à mettre en valeur, comme autant d’atouts des territoires ruraux, le bâti rural ancien, les paysages
modelés par l’agriculture, ainsi que les savoir-faire artisanaux propres à la mise en œuvre des matériaux

Le CAUE d'Eure-et-Loir
Dirigé par Samir ABDULAC, Vice-Président d’ICOMOS France, organise à Chartres (Mainvilliers), au
COMPA (Conservatoire du machinisme et des pratiques agricoles), le 25 avril 2010 une rencontre sur le
thème "Agricultures et paysages".
La projection d'un film documentaire intitulé "Agricultures et paysages : portraits d'ares" au COMPA le
25 avril 2010 à 15h00. Ce film présente une série de portraits de territoires ruraux et péri-urbains en
France et de leurs acteurs, support de sensibilisation et de débats. L'un de ces portraits est consacré à
la Beauce.

La projection sera suivie d'une table-ronde animée par le CAUE, en présence de Jean-Claude Schmidt,
hydrogéologue, chargé du service "Eau" du Conseil général, de Thomas Renaudin, ingénieur
agronome, chef d'exploitation au lycée agricole de la Saussaye et de François Roumet, paysagiste
DPLG et urbaniste OPQU, agence Roumet Guitel à Chartres.

We remind you that this Sunday, like every year on April 18, the date is dedicated to Monuments!
Let us consider the value of them in our lives and join the effort for the protection of those which are
threatened by neglect, destruction and degradation.
MOnuMENTA, as you probably already know, in collaboration with the Department of Urban Environment of
NTUA, dedicates this Sunday to the industrial heritage with the viewing of the film "Silent Machines" by T.
Rentzis. We expect you at 12 p.m in the Greek Film Center - ticket 8,00 €.
Moreover, in this year's celebration of the International Day of Monuments, the archaeological site of

To celebrate 18th April and the theme “The Heritage of Agriculture” Cork County Council has in association
with Ballincollig Heritage Association organised an event near Kilcre, County Cork, as a response to a
request from ICOMOS Ireland to local authorities. The Mayor Derry Canty will introduce the event. Local
expert Seamus Healey will give a talk on the use of a double limekiln at Kircre, which has been conserved
in recent years. There will be discussion on the conservation of the limekiln as well as the agriculture of the
area.

Scandrett Regional Park - Sunday 18 April 2010, 11am – 4pm
Scandrett Homestead and the historic barn will be open to the public between 11am - 4pm on Sunday 18
April to acknowledge the agricultural theme of World Heritage Day 2010.
The Scandrett farm complex was restored by the Auckland Regional Council between 2005 and 2007 and
this work won a New Zealand Institute of Architects heritage award.
You can visit Scandrett Regional Park and walk around the outside of the farm buildings every day but this
is a special opportunity to go inside the homestead and barn – don’t miss out!

To celebrate the legacy agriculture has left on the built environment, the New Zealand Historic Places Trust
is hosting an Open Day at the following properties:
Homebush Woolshed, Stables and Garden (Darfield) : $10 per adult, children under 12 free.
Terrace Station Homestead exterior and Garden (Hororata) : $10 per adult, children under 16 free
Coton’s Cottage (Hororata) : Gold coin donation
All properties will be open from 2:00 PM – 4:30 PM. Directions will be available at the Hororata Café and
Wine Bar (on the main road, Hororata), on the New Zealand Historic Places Trust website

New Zealand Historic Places Trust - Northland properties
World Heritage Day will be marked at two Northland properties on April 18 this year.
Visitors will be able to enjoy free entry to the Kerikeri Mission Station on that day as part of the global
celebration of heritage, and at Te Waimate Mission a guided historic walk is being organized.
Some of the earliest western agricultural activity in New Zealand took place in Northland.
One such event was the first use of a plough by missionary John Butler on May 3, 1820. Butler was a key
figure in the earliest days of the Kerikeri Mission, and agricultural activity was an important part of the
Mission’s work – both for survival and trade.
Te Waimate Mission also has a strong agricultural history. Te Waimate was New Zealand’s first full-scale
European-style farm, and as such is an extremely important part of New Zealand’s agricultural heritage
The mission thrived in the 1830s with agricultural implements made in the blacksmith’s and wheelwright’s
shops, and by 1834 New Zealand’s first flour mill was operating.
The cost of the Historic Walk is $10 per person, including entry to Te Waimate, Devonshire teas and a
guided tour of the surrounding area.
The guided tour of Te Waimate Mission starts at 10.30am and will include the site of the first flour mill –
which will take about an hour. We’ll repeat the guided walk throughout the day to meet visitor demand.”

New Zealand Historic Places Trust - Lower Northern Area
Tolaga Bay and Tokomaru Bay Wharves
Although farm buildings and historic dairy factories are obvious examples of agricultural heritage, other
structures also fit the theme – even wharves. The East Coast has two heritage icons that were closely
associated with the development of agriculture in the region – the Tolaga Bay and Tokomaru Bay Wharves.
In the case of Tokomaru Bay, the development of a freezing works there in 1911 led to the building of the
famous Tokomaru Bay Wharf which enabled meat to be loaded on to ships for export. The wharf is still used
today by commercial fishermen.
About 30km to the south, the extraordinary Tolaga Bay Wharf – described as a monument to the halcyon
days of the great pastoral economy – also stands as a testimony to the growth of agriculture in the region.
Last year, Tolaga Bay Wharf was registered as a Category I historic place by the NZHPT denoting it as a
place of outstanding historic importance. It’s also an agricultural landmark.
Although largely unused now, these two structures were part of the hugely important infrastructure that
fostered agricultural growth on the East Coast, and as such they are an important part of New Zealand’s
agricultural heritage. World Heritage Day on April 18 is an opportunity to reflect on their contribution to New
Zealand’s economic development.
Waikato - Lake House and Woodlands
This year’s World Heritage Day will focus on agricultural heritage, a subject dear to the heart of many New
Zealanders. That’s particularly true in the Waikato, which has a number of historic buildings with strong
connections to the region’s agricultural heritage. A stroll around Hamilton Lake is a good place to learn
more. Lake House is one of the oldest remaining buildings in Hamilton – and is closely linked with the story
of agriculture in the region .
Lake House was built for land speculator James Williamson as part of his Rukuhia Estate, and served as a
home for Williamson’s partner and manager, Alfred Cox. The land itself was surveyed in 1864 following the
colonial Government’s confiscation of vast tracts of Tainui land. James Williamson and others saw huge
opportunity in converting the Waikato swamp lands into arable pasture, and his investment in draining and
developing the Rukuhia land contributed greatly to agriculture in the Waikato. There’s no doubt, though, that
he helped change the economy and landscape of the Waikato forever.
At much the same time a similar story was unfolding at another Waikato agricultural heritage landmark –
Woodlands near Cambridge. This beautiful kauri homestead was built for Henry Reynolds who was installed
as the manager and part-owner of Woodlands estate. Like Rukuhia, the land was drained and prepared for
pasture – largely a result of Reynolds’ extensive network of roads and drainage ditches. Reynolds helped
transform Woodlands estate into pasture, which is still productive today – but perhaps even more
significantly he saw the potential in commercial butter production and export. In 1886, Reynolds
established a small butter factory at Pukekura. By 1894, Reynolds and Co produced 300 tons of butter a
year from butter factories and creameries in Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Taranaki.”
Inspired by a tattoo he saw on an ex-sailor’s arm, Reynolds also devised what was to become one of the
world’s most universally recognised brands, and an agricultural icon – the ‘Anchor’ trademark.
Both Lake House and Woodlands are two places that reflect the agricultural heritage of New Zealand
It’s appropriate that these historic structures, and others like them around the country, receive the
recognition they deserve for their part in New Zealand’s economic development. World Heritage Day on
April 18 is an opportunity to do that.

Simposio "Efectos de los Desastres Naturales en el Patrimonio Cultural: Monumentos y Sitios"
El Comité Nacional peruano de ICOMOS está organizando el simposio "Efectos de los Desastres
Naturales en el Patrimonio Cultural: Monumentos y Sitios" ha realizarse en el Centro Cultural Ccori Wasi,
de la Universidad Ricardo Palma, el 17 de abril, para conmemorar el DIA Internacional de los Monumentos
y Sitios de la UNESCO. Evento autorizado por ICOMOS Internacional.
La finalidad es promover el interés entre los especialistas, gobernantes, funcionarios y sociedad civil
acerca de las medidas preventivas que se deben asumir frente a los desastres naturales, que afectarían la
integridad y autenticidad de los monumentos y sitios de nuestro país. Daños irreversibles ya han sido
ocasionados durante los últimos años por sismos, lluvias torrenciales y vientos. Esta reunión, también,
servirá para fomentar una política de Estado que incluya a la conservación del patrimonio cultural.
Objetivos Específicos
Conocer e identificar los efectos de los desastres naturales en los monumentos y sitios del Perú.
Evaluar planes de contingencia, soluciones y propuestas para el deterioro o pérdida del patrimonio

Patrimonio y Agricultura En Tiempos De Cambios Globales
Siguiendo la línea trazada por la UNESCO y por el ICOMOS que han designado al año 2010 como el Año
de la Aproximación de las Culturas y el Año del Patrimonio Cultural Agrícola respectivamente, la Asociación
Patrimonio y Sitios [P+S], participa como en años anteriores, en la celebración del Día del Monumento
instituido el 18 de abril por la UNESCO en respuesta a la convocatoria del ICOMOS.
Para conmemorar el Día del Monumento 2010 contamos con el auspicio de la Universidad Femenina del
Sagrado Corazón y la Municipalidad de Miraflores y la presencia de importantes expositores nacionales y
extranjeros ligados al mundo académico e intelectual, quienes debatirán -desde una nueva perspectivatemas asociados al desarrollo de la agricultura, la arquitectura en relación a ésta y la tecnología agrícola
como el principio fundamental en la relación entre el hombre y la tierra.

O ICOMOS-Portugal em associação com o IGESPAR colabora na organização de mais de 400 iniciativas
por todo o país. A abertura oficial do dia ocorrerá em Peso da Régua, no Museu do Douro, com o
“Encontro Património Rural: Território e Paisagem como Recurso Cultural”, seguido de uma Visita guiada a
Ucanha e Persegueda. Acções conjuntas do ICOMOS-Portugal com o Ministério da Cultura, Ministério do
Ambiente e do Ordenamento do Território, IGESPAR, DRCN, Missão do Douro, Turismo do Douro e
Museu do Douro.
O encerramento ocorrerá em Monsaraz no:“Encontro Arte e Património: Ruralidades, Ciência e Arte nas
Terras de Monsaraz”, onde vamos recriar o ciclo da lã, com instalações e performances, almoço livre no
patio do Monte do Barrocal, seguido de uma sessão de conversas e estórias escolhidas, no antigo lagar de
azeite SEM-FIM, sobre o património rural, uma conversa entre Catedráticos, Prémios Pessoa, ganaderos,
apanhadores de espargos, túberas e cilarcas, ouvindo os que ainda constroem diariamente o
nosso património rural e os outros, aqueles que o estudam e investigam. Seguem-se passeios a pé ao fim
da tarde, em percursos do imaginário, caminhos propostos pela ADIM e baseados nas lendas e estórias
locais, passeando entre menires e no romanzal, na rocha da noiva ou em Santa Catarina, apanhando
laranjas nos Reboredos. Tudo ali à volta só para fazer fome para o jantar, livre e com marcação prévia, no
Lagar de Azeite/Restaurante SEM FIM, no Telheiro, ouvindo o Grupo Coral de Monsaraz, homens vestidos
de fato domingueiro, bem dispostos que gostam de conversa e cante à volta de um ou vários copos de
vinho, pão e queijo; apreciando as obras do escultor Gil Kaaliswart feitas a partir de peças ligadas ao
património rural.

« The plum as a cultural product and its role in the Serbian traditional folk life“
18 April, Mala Vrbica and Borač, Kragujevac
Following the proposed theme for 2010, the ICOMOS National Committee of Serbia decided to mark The
International Day for Monuments and Sites by organizing a field exercise in the villages Mala Vrbica and
Borač, near Kragujevac. The chosen topic “The plum as a cultural product and its role in the Serbian
traditional folk life“ is inspired by the heritage of agriculture in order to connect the theme of gathering with
the cultural and natural environment.
