page 1/4 www.anglophonie.fr Kate Middleton Hospitalized for Acute Morning Sickness (NBC Evening News, 2012) www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032619/vp/50063159#50063159 Now to the announcement today that was big news around the planet, long-rumoured, long- speculated about, now official word that Prince William and Kate Middleton are having a baby. The palace went public with the news today in large part because they had to because Kate went to the hospital for medical treatment. NBC’s Keir Simons with us tonight from London. Keir, good evening. Good evening, Brian. This is Keir with the Seventh Hospital in Central London. Mother-to-be Kate Middleton checked in here this morning with a very serious case of morning sickness. The Palace says she won’t leave here for days. The expectant father, Prince William, leaving the hospital tonight just hours after today’s much anticipated announcement: Princess Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, is expecting her first child. Last Friday, visiting her former school, Kate was gently protecting her stomach – and a royal secret. Reportedly even the Queen didn’t know Kate was pregnant until today. But she and all the other Royals are said to be delighted at the news. The announcement came earlier than the Palace may have wanted, before the crucial twelve-week stage because Kate needed treatment for very acute morning sickness. I think there’s probably mixed feelings at the moment at the Palace. Obviously it’s amazing news and everyone’s been congratulating the couple, but Kate is in hospital although doctors are saying (that) it’s not serious. Just last week Kate was seen playing field hockey, no sign of morning sickness, but this morning the couple drove to the hospital in Central London. The Palace says (that) she’ll be there for days. Still, the news of Kate’s impending motherhood is being welcomed across Britain – from her home town in Bucklebury. What a present overall for the family, the country and especially the Royals – all the way to 10 Downing Street. It’s absolutely wonderful news and I’m delighted for them, I’m sure they’ll make absolutely brilliant parents. A royal baby is always big news, as it was thirty years ago with the arrival of William himself – and with his father, Prince Charles, in 1948. But this time, for the first time in British history, the child will be heir to the throne no matter what its gender. If Princess Kate were to have a little girl rather than a little boy, then she would become Queen of England. There was another sign last week of the announcement to come: William was given a present of baby clothes. I love that, he says. Now we know why. While the Palace will not say precisely what stage Kate’s pregnancy is at, other than she has not yet passed the twelve-week stage, meaning we won’t see a royal birth, Brian, until at least May at the earliest. page 2/4 Keir Simmons on the big announcement this morning in London.
