Canadian Winter Homeschool Materials include both English and French materials (the two official languages of
Canada). These materials may be of interest to homeschoolers who are looking for non-religious and non-American
content. Our methods are simple and old-fashioned; it is presumed that a parent will help the student to use the
material. Canadian spelling is used in general. Many thanks to my homeschooled daughter, Marlene, for her great ideas,
and my husband, Pierre, for his support and love!

This is a selection of worksheets to go with the ‘Notdog’ mystery story called ‘Qui a peur des fantômes?’ by Sylvie
Desrosiers. Notdog is possibly the ugliest dog in town, but he is brilliant at helping his 12-year old owner, Jocelyne, and
her two friends, John and Agnès, to solve local mysteries. The Notdog stories are filled with charming ‘Quebecisms’,
simple wordplay and colourful characters. French students are sure to be motivated by the quick-paced plot development,
clear descriptions and easily-understood jokes. This story is suitable for intermediate to advanced level French students,
ages 1o and up. For the most part, it is written in the présent and passé composé. The book must be borrowed or
purchased separately.

1. Read the story one chapter at a time (12 chapters in total). As you read, use the chapter pages to make a list of any
words that you do not understand. Write them down in one column of the ‘vocabulary’ chart, look up their
meaning, and write their English equivalent in the other column. After you have read an entire chapter, use your
own words to summarize that chapter on the same sheet, in the space provided. Use correct grammar and a variety
of differently-structured sentences. A competent adult will need to read and evaluate your work.

2. Continue with any or all of the following tasks. Some of them may require that you reread parts of the story. A
teacher may wish to decide whether some of these assignments should be completed while reading the story instead
of after having read the entire text.
- Fill in two pages of assignments, ‘things to find’ within the text (specific words, sentences, etc.).
- Answer the ‘Reading Comprehension’ questions in full sentences on a piece of loose-leaf.
- Read the grammar pages and learn how to use ‘on’. Complete the exercises on a piece of loose-leaf.
- Study the ‘Verbs’ vocabulary list. Then, complete the ‘Verbs’ crossword without referring to the list.
- Study the ‘General’ vocabulary list. Then, fill in the blanks to complete the ‘General’ words wheel without
referring to the list, being sure to indicate whether nouns are masculine or feminine.
- Identify some of the colloquial Québec terms that are used in the text.

Quels hommes sont finalement arrêtés par la police?
The names of several characters in the story contain puns. In Quebec slang, ‘La brosse’ means ‘the act of
getting drunk’. ‘Jean Caisse’ sounds like ‘j’encaisse’, which means, ‘I cash a cheque’ – funny, for a
banker! Can you find any others?
