Dear Friends,
I'm delighted to announce the first edition of Asian Art in Brussels (AAB).
Founded by the original group of dealers of BOA Fair, AAB has been
expanded with some excellent new members. We warmly welcome the
reputable colleagues who have joined us this year and look forward that
even more will join in future. The active collaboration amongst us dealers is
the force behind the successful organization of this event, rich in diverse
aspects.
We needed a more comprehensive approach to the meaning and message
of the antique fair and for this reason we have launched this year, in
collaboration with IBHEC (Institute Belge des Haute Etudes Chinoises), BAAF
(Brussels Ancient Art Fair) and BIAPAL (Brussels International Art Promotion
and Logistics ), a substantial program of lectures under the auspicious name
of ArtConnoisseurs. World renowned scholars will lecture on various aspects
of Asian art and on Egyptian and Mediterranean antiquities .
The lectures on Asian Art will be held at the prestigious MIM ( Musée des
Instruments de Musique ) and those on Archaeology at the Cercle de
Lorraine.
A particular thankyou to Région Bruxelles-Capitale for its generosity , to
the esteemed Lecturers, the members of the Comité d'Honneur and the
Vetting Committee, who, with enthusiasm, have shared our vision.
The arts of India, Himalayas, Central Asia, China, South-east Asia and Japan
are represented in this first catalogue of Asian Art in Brussels. Selected
pieces, with impeccable references will be offered to the connoisseur and
the new collector, to expand the interest for the art and culture of Asia.
Our show is vetted by a panel of independent experts and all pieces are
certified by Art Loss Register.
I welcome friends and visitors to this first edition that, I'm confident, will
establish Asian Art in Brussels as an event not to be missed for the years to
come.

Madame Olga Polunin and Mr. Matthieu Wolmark, founders of BIAPAL, have
developed in a rather short time a remarkable media program, communicating the message of excellence and quality we wish to spread about our
fairs and dealers, exhibiting in the perfect setting of the Sablon in Brussels,

How hate turned to love?
…the powerful impact of netsuke

The point of the ironic title of this lecture is that
Rutherston himself was distinctly suspicious of what
he perceived as fiddly little carvings in rather bad
taste and of little aesthetic merit. He spent most of
his ten years in Japanese art at Sotheby's avoiding
netsuke, and it was only when he moved to Sydney
Moss, and had to deal with them on a daily basis,
that he began to appreciate their true merit and
interest. Accordingly the lecture makes the assumption that many potential members of the audience
may share his former scepticism about the quality of
netsuke. What he hopes to demonstrate is that while
there are large numbers of entirely uninteresting
netsuke around, once one begins to scratch the
surface, a wealth of treasures is revealed beneath in
the form of carvings of great skill and beauty, with
subjects that range from the humorous, through the

macabre and the imaginative to works that are
triumphs of naturalist observation and others that
even have a spiritual dimension.
Max Rutherston is a polyglot dealer in Japanese art.
In 1992 he was invited by Sotheby's to get involved
in Japanese art, which he was pleased to do once he
had spent a year studying the Japanese language. He
worked in the Japanese Department of Sotheby's
London for10 years, the last 5 as head of department, before being persuaded to go and manage the
Japanese side of London's oldest surviving Asian art
dealer, Sydney L. Moss Ltd. In 2002 he formed his
present partnership of Rutherston & Bandini Ltd. For
the last 11 years he has specialised in netsuke above
all else.

Sorbonne. Membre de diverses associations scientifiques, il est notamment Senior Visiting Fellow de
l'International Institute for Asian Studies à Leiden. Il

disques. Il joue de plusieurs instruments chinois à
vent et dirige l'ensemble Fleur de Prunus.

exceptionelle

La conférence décrit l'évolution d'une incantation
bouddhiste chinoise attribuée au maître de méditation Pu'an (1115-1169). Le texte et la musique de
cette oeuvre, l'Incantation de Pu'an, sont attestés dès
le XVIe siècle et font aujourd'hui partie de répertoires
aussi différents que ceux des moines, des paysans,
des lettrés, des notables et des musiciens professionnels. D'abord transmise dans les temples, l'Incantation
fut intégrée au répertoire instrumental de la cour
impériale des Qing, jouée par l'empereur Kangxi luimême. L'analyse de la diffusion de l'Incantation de
Pu'an contredit toute dogmatique d'une voie unique
de diffusion, qu'elle soit des lettrés vers le peuple ou
de la cour vers le peuple. Les sphères autonomes des
musiques du peuple, de la cour et des lettrés
n'existent pas en Chine.
Après des études de théâtre puis de sinologie à Paris
et au conservatoire de musique de Shanghai François
Picard soutient son doctorat en 199I sous la direction
de Iannis Xenakis et travaille ensuite comme producteur à Radio France. Depuis 1998 il est professeur

An overview of applications in
archaeology and art

Discoveries of radioactivity and cosmic rays had profound effect on modern science and everyday life of
the last 100 years. Among various dating techniques
methods developed in early 20th century 14C dating
one that is quite popular and crossed interdisciplinary
fields.
In 1949 Libby and co-workers have shown that
cosmogenic and radioactive isotope of carbon can
be used as a radioactive clock. Potential of this
method was quickly realized by archeology and
climate research. Relatively long half-life of 14C
(5730 yrs) allows application back to nearly 50,000
years ago. This range includes most exciting events
of climate and modern human history. With an
advent of Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) in
early 1980 ties new applications were possible.
Sample size required for AMS 14C dating (only few
milligrams) allows precious objects such as unique
statues, paintings and textiles to be analyzed. Following the dating of the Shroud of Turin in 1989, textiles
are among many samples that the AMS laboratory
at ETH Zurich analyzed.
This lecture will give an overview of the dating
method and its applications. Precision of 14C dating
will be addressed on examples from various time
periods.
After completing a PhD studies at ETH Zürich Irka
continued research at ETH as a Post Doc. Since 2001
is employed as a senior Research Scientist at the
Laboratory of Ion Beam Physics, ETH Zurich.
Irka is a radiocarbon dating specialist with a background in nuclear physics (Master Degree in physics,
Jagiellonian University, Cracow, Poland, 1986).

The Royal Nomadic Court of the
Tibetan Kings

In the 7th century Tibet arose as newcomers on the
stage of history. This talk will explore how the royal
aesthetics of their nomadic court exemplifies an
energy and spirit unique to the explosive and shortlived Tibetan Empire (7th-9th centuries). By looking at
how processes of transfer and translation informed
craftsmanship, types, shapes, and decorative motifs,
this lecture will offer an opulent and vivid narrative
telling of the rise in history of the early Kings of Tibet
during its tryst with imperial greatness.

Beginning with the reign of Srong-btsan sgam-po, in
the first half of the 7th century, and reaching it's
political military height during the time of Khri-srong
lde-btsan, in the late 8th century, the royal nomadic
encampment of Tibet engaged itself in the building
of an imperial kingdom that was one of the largest
the world has ever known. From royal hunts to
sumptuous feasts, opulent marriages and massif
funerals, Tibetans of this time fashioned themselves
as matchless warriors and universal monarchs.
Through images of paintings and silk, and objects of
gold and silver, this talk promises to be if anything
else a feast for the eyes and imagination.
David Pritzker is currently working on his DPhil in
Tibetan and Himalayan Studies at the University of
Oxford. His research revolves around the production
of early cave paintings from the 11th to 14th century
in the ancient Kingdom of Guge in Western Tibet,
where, he has recently returned from a six-week
fieldwork expedition.
David's expertise in the history and culture of the
Himalayas stems from life long experience of the
regions art, in situ and around the world. In 2008
David began to work as an assistant curator for
Himalayan Art Resources an encyclopedic website
dedicated to the arts of the Himalayas. Prior to this,
starting in 2006, David worked as a Curator of
Himalayan Art at the Rubin Museum in New York
City where he was tasked to evaluate the collection
in order to select out the best objects whereby forming their initial permanent collection. On the heels of
this work he curated their first exhibition on Nepal
entitled, "From The Land Of The Gods: The Art of
the Kathmandu Valley". Pritzker also produced a
small show in Aspen, Colorado, "Ocean of Wisdom,
Embodiment of Compassion: Glimpses of Tibetan
Buddhist Art" curated by Pratapatitya Pal in 2008 for
a conference on Tibet.
David completed his undergraduate degree at
Stanford University with a B.A. in History. He holds a
Masters from Oxford.

Romancing Indian Art for 50 years
By Dr. Pratapaditya Pal
Dr. Pal has began his professional career as a historian of Indian art almost half a century ago.
In this lecture he will speak about highlights of his
experience with museums and private collectors in
the United States, illustrated with slides of notable
examples of Indian sculpture. He will also allude at
the changing mores of art collecting in the U.S. since
1960s.
A prolific writer, Dr. Pal is the author and editor of
over 60 books and 150 articles. he has also organized
numerous groundbreaking exhibitions on the arts of
Asia with scholarly catalogues and was the General
Editor of Marg, the prestigious art journal published
in India.

The publication of the long-awaited study of the
history of the Hindu-Buddhist sculpture of Kashmir
by Dr. John Siudmak coincides with the AAB event,
and an advance copy of the book will be available
from Brill, the publishers. The work is mostly a study
of the stone sculpture of Kashmir dating from its earliest
origins in the fourth/fifth century through the early
eleventh century, but includes work in other media.
It is the first major study devoted to the subject since
the 1975 publication of The Bronzes of Kashmir by
Dr Pratapaditya Pal, a seminal work in this field.

SOULFUL IMAGES: SCULPTURES FROM THE INDIC TRADITIONS
CROWNED BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI
The principal image of the stele depicts a crowned Buddha seated in the
diamond attitude (vajraparyankasana) on a double lotus pedestal. He displays
the gesture of meditation (dhyana-mudra) and holds an alms bowl. The upper
monastic garment is rendered without folds in a transparent manner and
covers both shoulders. The Buddha has bejewelled ornaments, namely a five
pointed crown fastened with a ribbon with swirling ends, that symbolize the
qualities of the five cosmic buddhas and emphasizes the aspect of a world
sovereign (chakravartin), and a beaded necklace with attached pendants.
The image is placed on a niche, surrounded by an archiectural structure.
On top of both columns there are two birds, probably goose, wich tales
become a floral garment ending in the kirtimukha. On the base of the
sculpture there is a carving that makes this piece a very peculiar one, that of
a man with the head inside a big pot. The image could probably referrer to
the story of a devotee who offered a jar of honey to the Buddha. After the
Buddha was accepting it, he showed such a big joy that fell down inside the
container.

“KISARAGI” HANAIRE BY OTAGAKI RENGETSU
Although Rengetsu (Lotus Moon) used to make utensils for senchado and sake
drinking, she produced occasionally implements for chanoyu (tea ceremony). Her
subtle style is completely within the realm of wabi-cha (the aesthetics of
imperfect and rustic beauty, emphasizing simplicity). This flower vase was made
for flower arrangement during Kisaragi (the second month of the lunar calendar).
It is meant to hold a branch with some ume (prunus) blossoms, to be displayed
in the waiting area for guests attending the tea ceremony. Only a few examples
of hanaire by Rengetsu are known worldwide.
The waka poem reads as follows:
When the moon
appears faint in the mist
the morning is good—
likewise the evening moon
of Kisaragi.

This item comes with a kanteibako (certification box -鑑定箱) by Hirose Keiji
head priest of the Temple of Heavenly Light (Jinko'in), where Rengetsu lived
from 1865~1875.

Silver treasure boat in the form of a phoenix. The boat contains peach blossom
branches carrying three jade peaches.
The object comes on a fine lacquered table decorated with cranes above waves.

SOLITARY PLUM TREE
The plum is a symbol of spring, a tree which resists the cold and begins to blossom
at the end of winter. It was probably introduced from China in the Nara period and
was initially the most frequently mentioned flower in Japanese poetry, celebrated for
its sweet perfume and delicate blossoms.
This painting is characterized by the flat, decorative style typical of the Rinpa school.
Most Rinpa artists followed in the footsteps of the great masters such as Tawaraya
Sotatsu (fl. ca 1600-1640), Ogata Korin (1658-1716) and Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1828),
and this work certainly exemplifies the tradition. They express their inborn sensibilities in a free use of vivid colours and bold decorative pattern. Rinpa masters’ works
share at least one important feature: the striking beauty of abstract pattern and design.

SHIRO HANNYA NOH MASK
Carved by Omiya Yamato Sanemori (last generation of Iseki family)
With a lacquered original storage box
The Hannya mask is a noh mask which represents a jealous female demon or
serpent. This piece has an exceptional expression. Pale face and the slight wrinkle
on the middle of the forehead express the anger and the pains of deep sorrow.
On the backside of the mask, it is lacquered with gold lacquer “Shiro-Hannya,
carved by Omi”. Omi means Omi-Iseki family who produced the noh masks from
16th to 17th century in Omi (today, Nagahama city, Shiga prefecture).
