Please be on the look out for more information and a registration form for you and your family to complete and return to school. Plans are under way in order to offer parents a variety of opportunities to choose two sessions to attend during the event on the following topics: Reading Skills, Math Skills, New Common Core Curriculum, PBIS (positive based intervention support program), AR (accelerator reader program), EOG (end of grade assessments), childhood health, wellness, and obesity, and the world of technology (social chats rooms, parental awareness, & use of technology to enhance student learning). Many of these sessions will be facilitated by instructional support staff within the Rockingham County School District along with Monroeton staff members. We hope you will be able to take advantage of this opportunity. The children will be entertained in the school’s gym while the parents attend the two sessions of their choice. We would like to take this opportunity to share with you how we give back to the community. Each year, a grade level sponsors a community service project. This year our kindergarten classes will sponsor a school-wide canned food drive during the months of November and December. Be on the look out for additional information. Our first graders will sponsor pen pals for local nursing homes. In January, our second graders will sponsor a “St. Jude’s Math-a-thon.” Third graders sponsored Red Ribbon Week for the school in October and our fourth graders will sponsor a Cystic Fibrosis Drive in the spring. Our fifth graders sponsor Red Cross Blood Drives and Mr. Wray will sponsor a school wide “Jump Rope for Heart” campaign in February. Our staff also contributes to and sponsors an annually drive for United Way, Angel Tree Program, and Relay for Life Campaign. We hope that by involving our children and families in most of these initiatives, we can give back to the community as we all continue to give thanks for the wonderful resources and opportunities our children are provided at Monroeton Elementary School. If you ever have questions or concerns, please feel free to call, stop in, or email me at [email protected]. “Whatever It Takes, Our Kids Are Worth It” Mrs. Robin Finberg More Monroeton School Family News on the Back… Page 2 of 2 November Monroeton School Family Newsletter MNRT Happenings: 21 Report Cards 23-25 No School: Happy Thanksgiving Upcoming December Events 1 2 5-9 12 14 21 6:00 pm PTA Tree Lighting Ceremony Spirit Day: PJs PTA Holiday Shop Skate Night PAPA Johns Last Day for AR 12:30 pm Early Release Day Dec. 22Jan. 2 No School: Holiday Break Jan. 3 Teacher Workday Jan. 4 Students Return from Break Whatever It Takes, Our Kids Are Worth It. We hope you will be able to come out and support your PTA on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 6:00 pm in the school’s media center. So far this year, the PTA, with the wonderful support of the Monroeton parents, volunteers, and community, have sponsored the Family Campfire Event, the Fire Safety Day for 4th and 5th graders this year, and the awesome Trunk-or-Treat Event. During this event you will hear about other upcoming events such as how you can get involved in the annual PTA Holiday Shop and many other activities and events the PTA is planning for the children this year. We hope you will be able to join us. Mustang News: On behalf of Monroeton’s Student Council, thank you to everyone who came out to donate blood during our fall blood drive on October 24th. The student council exceeded their goal and collected 33 pints to help our community. Thank you to everyone who supported our fall book fair. We had a great turn out for the family book fair/PTA night as well as the grandparent’s morning. Congratulations to Katie Manspile, Dequan Koger, Megan Combs, and Clay Anderson for winning the drawing for free books. Our first PAPA John’s Night was a great success. Congratulations to Ms. Toby’s and Mrs. Lineberry’s classes for having the highest percentage of items sold during the September and October night who celebrated with a FREE PIZZA PARTY! We had a great turn out at our school skate night on Oct. 10th. Congratulations to the following sock and/or skate race winners or contests: Thomas Blackstock, Renee Springs, Casey Wilson, Taylor Revis, Paul Barker, Conner Bridges, and Seth Martin. Ms. Carter’s class had the highest percentage of students in attendance and received free skate passes. Our next school skate night is November 14th from 5:30-7:30 pm at the Roll-a-Bout in Eden. Monroeton Elementary offers a variety of student recognition programs through out the year. Classes are earning Mustang Notes daily for showing their P.R.I.D.E. Ask your child about this new recognition program we have started this year through PBIS and what PRIDE stands for. Last month several classes collected 50 or more notes and earned a special treat with Mrs. Finberg and Mrs. Reavis. Congratulations to the following classes for consistently showing their Mustang PRIDE: Mrs. Wray, Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Winters, Mrs. Rideout, and Mrs. Wheless’ classes. We also kicked off our “Bus Bucks” program on Monday, October 24, 2011. When students show their Mustang PRIDE each day they can earn a “bus buck”. The more “bucks” they earn through out the year, the more prizes they will receive. Please continue to encourage your bus rider to help keep the school bus safe. Students and homerooms are also recognized for having the highest percentage of students in attendance each month with a classroom Mustang trophy. The class with the highest percentage out of the entire school gets to proudly hang the school’s attendance banner and individual students are recognized each six week grading period and have a chance to win some really cool prizes! Congratulations to the following classes who were the winners for the month of August and September: Mrs. Barham, Mrs. Lineberry, Mrs. Ireland, Mrs. Hughes, Ms. Archibald, Ms. Carter, Mrs. Powell, Mrs. Costenaro, Ms. Aycock, and Ms. Haynes. Congratulations to the following students whose names were drawn for prizes during the attendance and honor roll assembly held on October 7, 2011: Brooke Fleming, Stephen Southern, Diamond Martin, James Jones, Alexis Herbin, Justice Seely, Austin Pinnix, and Bryon Shelton.
