François Doisneau Sandia National Laboratories - Livermore, CA Numerical simulation of sprays in direct fuel injection aims at assessing the performance and variability of engines. Efficiently solving this multiscale problem critically relies on the modeling and numerical strategy. But the choices at stake appear unclear to most of us. Lagrangian or Eulerian Spray, Real Gas, Interface Capturing: why such a wealth of approaches? RANS, LES: how can the same problem be computed with cell sizes that vary from 1μm to 1mm? Atomization, combustion: why are calibrated models used and what impact has this on the reliability of predictions? These questions are both casual and challenging and I will discuss them through some aspects of the physics of fuel injection and through subtleties of today’s numerical approaches for two-phase flows. In particular, I will show the relevance of the Eulerian Spray approach I am currently developing for device-size simulations and the prospects it opens up.
