A
s I prepare this first newsletter as CEO of the
Foundation I cannot help but begin with a reference
to the horrible events of September 11. Much has
been said about this international tragedy. I am struck by
the recent opinion piece in the September 30, 2001 Halifax
Herald. As we look again to the future I am hopeful that
Richard Gwyn’s perspective will ring true.
"The cult of individualism has probably now reached some
kind of a peak. Here, the rebalancing will involve a greater
acceptance of the overarching needs of society and of the
- val
ues of solidarity and of collectivity
.
The cult of celebrity may also have reached some kind of
peak. This is more questionable than the other attitudinal
changes. Amid the rootlessness of mass media and mass enter
tainment (magnified now by globalization), celebrities perfor
m
like beacons, telling us how to behave, whom to admire. It's at
least possible that old-style heroes - individuals who have done
things for others – may come back into some respect, if not
vogue."
It is of course this very ideal that is at the root of the
Foundation’s work. Our mission statement begins, "We strive
to identify and support talented students who show promise
of leadership and a strong commitment to service in the
community. We fund these citizens to study on Canadian
campuses, to the benefit of their future and ours." As is often
said by many in our network of volunteers, the work we do
renews faith in the future and rejuvinates the spirit.
To ensure that we are able to continue to do this well
beyond the horizon of my vision, I have been working since
my appointment May 1, 2001 to prepare the Foundation for
the years ahead. With the support of the Trustees we have
restructured the Board and constituted a number of new
committees whose responsibilities have been re-defined and
focus on key issues of governance, leadership, and fundraising. These committees will soon begin their work and collectively they will shape the future of the Foundation. It is
an exciting time as we explore opportunities for program
expansion and growth, and anticipate the changing landscape of post-secondary education in this country.
We will of course continue to be dependant on the financial,
physical and spiritual contributions of countless individuals,
corporations, private foundations and post-secondary insti tutions across Canada. I am indeed hopeful, and I look forward to the opportunities we will share as we all work to
enhance the presence, impact and success of the Foundation
and our scholars.
Clark Hortsing-Perna

Fall Wine and Cheese
I am pleased to once again invite you all to join us in Toronto for the 14th Annual Fall Wine Tasting
in the elegant offices of McKinsey & Company. We look forward to introducing you to some of our
scholars and enjoying an evening of excellent wines chosen by my predecessor Dr Robert Cluett
accompanied by a fine selection of cheeses chosen by Trustee Kim Echlin. Please plan to join us
December 2 in Toronto. For those of you who would prefer another venue, we are pleased that our
Chair, Pierre Boudreault, is once again hosting the Montreal Wine Tasting in his home on the
evening of December 6. Invitations should arrive in the post shortly.

Me Pierre Boudreault, fiduciaire dévoué et
Vu l’enthousiasme généré par l’entreprise, Me Pierre Boudreault n’a
