The Church of The Holy Name of Jesus The Franciscan Friars 207 West 96th Street New York, New York 10025 www.holynamenyc.org Our Mission Statement The Parish of the Holy Name of Jesus is a vibrant urban ministry in the Roman Catholic Church within the Franciscan tradition. In our rich diversity of cultures and languages, we seek to be open to God’s spirit so that we might grow in the faith that makes us one and give witness to the presence of Christ in our daily lives. As instruments of God’s peace, we reach out to and welcome all people with a special concern for the poor, the alienated, and the immigrant. We do this through worship, education, and outreach in fulfilling our dream that all might be served in the spirit of St. Francis. OUR PARISH CELEBRATES THE LENTEN SCRUTINIES Today, March 18th and next Sunday March 25th, 2012 we celebrate the Second and Third Scrutinies with the Elect—those preparing for Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist at the Easter Vigil on April 7th, 2012. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults says that the purpose of the Scrutinies is to ‘uncover and then to heal all that is weak, defective and sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out and then to strengthen all that is upright, strong and good.’ As we pray for them we ask God to do exactly the same thing for us! What can we as a parish do to help those preparing for Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist? If possible, take part in the Scrutiny at the 12 Noon Mass. Spend some time in prayer for the men and women preparing for the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. TODAY’S PARISH, a Ligouri publication, gives this suggestion: Pray also for the courage to look honestly into your own heart. What needs to be healed and what needs to be strengthened in your own life? ‘Blessed are you, God of light and Lord of Life, for you have opened our eyes to see your truth and to know your love. Improve our sight that we may see your love that surrounds us…open our graves and raise us to new life in your Son.’ Tuesday Evening Lenten Vespers Series FOR YOUR INFORMATION Moms-N-Tots Are you the Mom of a young child 3 and under?
