ARGO: THE REAL STORY ARGO, LA VRAIE HISTOIRE THE CANADIAN AMBASSADOR’S CRUCIAL ROLE By awarding the Oscar for best film of 2013 to Ben Affleck’s ARGO, Hollywood celebrated the extraordinary success of the CIA operation to get six American diplomats out of Iran in 1980. Yet the award led to controversy. In fact, contrary to what the film claims, it was Canada rather than the CIA that initiated Operation Argo. This documentary recalls the circumstances surrounding the siege of the American embassy and the hostage-taking of its staff by Iranian demonstrators. Six American nationals managed to get away and take shelter in the Canadian embassy, which worked closely with Ottawa to work out a plan to get them out of the country, while the CIA, more concerned with the hostages than the fugitives, dragged its feet. The circumstances of the escape, quite different from what the film describes, are also examined. Viewers learn that CIA agent Tony Mendez came close to scuttling the operation and that the Iranian authorities, still torn between moderates and extremists, had never actively tried to capture the fugitives. The hostage crisis ultimately served to push Iran into the hands of radical Islamists.
