participate in building compassion for our varying
experiences. Telefilm’s willingness to fund and support

On behalf of Freeze Frame’s board and
staff, it is my privilege to welcome
everyone in attendance at the 2008
International Film Festival For Kids of All
Ages. For the past 12 years the festival
has offered Manitobans an opportunity
to encounter Canadian and international
artists, to explore other cultures and
languages, and to experience highly
original films.
At last year’s festival, I was deeply moved
by two brilliant features, Italy’s Red Like
the Sky and South Africa’s Boy Called Twist.
Like so many others, I look forward with
huge anticipation to the 2008 screenings
of short and feature length films.
Freeze Frame has always had the
benefit of great involvement from
the community, and we would like
to acknowledge all who support us.
Thank-you to our jurors, workshop
participants and video competition
entrants for sharing your talents. Thankyou to our partners, funders, sponsors and
volunteers for making this event a reality.

What a year! Freeze Frame’s staff has had
the opportunity to meet with colleagues
the world over, through an internship
in Belgium, a children’s film festival in
Amsterdam, a visit from a cultural envoy
responsible for the development of film
in eastern France, and then the launch of
a workshop in collaboration with Petites
Vues, a children’s film festival in Alsace,
France. We come to the Festival energized
by these diverse experiences and delighted
to share our new programs with you!
In light of the growth of our organization
and the diversity of our activities, we are
now operating under the title Freeze
Frame Media Arts Centre for Young
People. The International Film Festival
for Kids of All Ages remains a key annual
event in Freeze Frame’s programming,
reflecting our mandate to promote the
art of filmmaking, stimulate media
awareness, and inspire creativity.
Throughout the ten days of the festival you
will have access to films from all over the
world, and most of them you can only see
in Winnipeg exclusively at this festival. You
will also meet exceptional international
and Canadian guest artists, here to share
their passion for filmmaking at screenings
and in stimulating workshops.
In the whirlwind of preparations for
this annual festival, I am buoyed by the
thought that I will soon find myself settled
in the movie theatre with my own family.
The lights will go down, there will be
that special moment of calm that comes
with anticipation while we wait, just
barely able to distinguish the screen in
front of us. Then suddenly, there will be
a splash of colour and light, a surge of
sound, and we are drawn in. The magic
begins. Lost in the vortex of a good story
well told….masterful

sounds, music from another
place…Shhh! It’s starting!

l’aboutissement de tous nos programmes
et objectifs.
Pendant les dix jours du Festival vous aurez
à votre disposition des films de partout
dans le monde (la plupart disponible à
Winnipeg uniquement lors de Freeze
Frame). Des invités internationaux et
canadiens exceptionnels
viendront partager leur
passion pour l’animation,
le documentaire, le
cinéma avec vous, en
présentant leurs films, et
en proposant des ateliers
stimulants.
Dans tout le tourbillon
qu’est la préparation
du Festival, j’ai hâte
d’être au moment où
je peux enfin m’installer au cinéma avec
ma famille. Le noir se fait, et là, c’est ce
calme tout particulier de l’anticipation.
Et puis, d’un coup, le son et la lumière
arrivent, on peut se laisser envoûter
par la magie. Moi, ma famille, et les
autres gens venus partager ce moment
privilégié vont se perdre dans le vortex
d’une bonne histoire, bien racontée….

years, now. The National Film Board of Canada is honoured to

new global realities and to engage young people with the
issues that shape our lives.

Join us to open the 12th annual Freeze Frame International Film
Festival with the Manitoba premiere of Hannah’s Story with
Winnipeg’s own Hannah Taylor of the Ladybug Foundation,
director Juanita Peters and hosted by Global Television
personality, Andrea Slobodian - Weather Specialist. You’ll enjoy
a selection of some of the best short films playing at Freeze Frame
2008, presented by international guest artist Jean-Luc Slock,
founder and director of Camera-etc. and Delphine Hermans,
filmmaker and animator with Caméra–etc. in Belgium.

See the world through the eyes of up-and-coming directors,
producers, editors, cinematographers, actors and musicians as
we celebrate Manitoba’s young filmmakers grades nine through
twelve (14 to 19 years) at Reel Views. All nominated videos will be
screened and special guest presenters will recognize winners in a
variety of categories.

Invités internationaux
Jean-Luc Slock founded children’s creative arts
centre Caméra–etc. in Liège, Belgium almost 30 years
ago. With a mandate to develop understanding and
appreciation of films in young people, Caméra–etc.
encourages the production of first film and video
works by children, youth and adults. A distinguished
filmmaker and producer, Slock has led production
workshops with young people all over the world. At
the Festival he will present a collection of films made
through Caméra–etc. and will lead a discussion with
the audience after the screening.
Jean-Luc Slock a fondé Caméra-etc. à Liège, Belgique
en 1979. L’objectif principal de cette association est de
sensibiliser les jeunes au langage audiovisuel. En tant de
centre de création Caméra-etc. encourage la production
de premières œuvres d’enfants, de jeunes auteurs ou
d’adultes. Jean-Luc Slock, réalisateur et producteur a
donné des ateliers de production aux jeunes partout
dans le monde. Lors de Freeze Frame, Jean-Luc Slock
présentera une collection de courts métrages réalisés avec
Caméra-etc. Il sera présent pour répondre aux questions
lors des projections.
Delphine Hermans studied Fine Arts at the
National School for Visual Arts in La Cambre, Belgium,
specializing in animated film. A filmmaker and
animator with Caméra–etc. in Belgium since 2006,
Delphine has worked with children on film projects in
Africa, India and Europe. During the Festival she will
lead workshops in animation techniques.
Delphine Hermans, réalisatrice d’animation avec
Caméra-etc. depuis 2006, a fait des études en beaux arts
École nationale supérieure des Arts Visuels de La Cambre,
Bruxelles avec option cinéma animation. Delphine
a travaillé avec des enfants en Afrique, en Inde et en
Europe. Lors de Freeze Frame elle donnera des ateliers en
animation.

Izabela Byzmek is an international award-winning
animation artist educated in Poland, Italy and Canada.
She has worked on such feature films as Happily Never
After and The Nutty Professor, and has directed the
National Film Board children’s short Oma’s Quilt. Izabela
will lead a workshop in character design involving the
creation of expressive characters using paper cutouts
and basic stop-motion animation technique.
Izabela Bzymek est une réalisatrice d’animation primée sur
la scène internationale. Née en Pologne, elle a grandi en Italie
et ensuite au Canada. Elle a travaillé sur de longs métrages tels
Happily Never After et The Nutty professor. Elle vient de réaliser le
court métrage d’animation, Une courtepointe pour grand-maman
/ Oma s Quilt à L’Office national du film au Canada. Izabela
mènera un atelier sur la conception de personnages d’animation
avec du papier découpé, le 21 mars à 13h30.
Suzanne Druwé has been a journalist with the
public broadcaster Radio-Canada for over 18 years,
working as an announcer, producer and reporter.
She is currently a producer in the newsroom at
Radio-Canada Manitoba. Her experience in collecting,
analysing and delivering information, combined
with her initial training as a teacher, will ensure that
Suzanne’s workshop on news journalism will be both
informative and inspiring for students.
Suzanne Druwé est journaliste à la télévision de RadioCanada, le diffuseur public, depuis plus de 18 ans. Elle a tour
à tour été animatrice, réalisatrice et reporter sur le terrain.
Elle est actuellement réalisatrice à l’affection de la salle de
nouvelles de Radio-Canada au Manitoba. Sa longue expérience
dans la cueillette, le traitement et la livraison de l’information,
ainsi qu’une formation de base en enseignement, en font une
intervenante idéale pour toute communication sur le métier
auprès des jeunes du milieu scolaire.
Mike Maryniuk, a filmmaker from Winnipeg, cut his
teeth in the artform working with hand-processed
film. He has been in love with the technique since.
His influences are Norman McLaren, old National Film
Board vignettes, Billy Van in The Hilarious House of
Frankenstein, Jim Henson and base humour of any sort.
Mike will offer animation workshops in pixelation and
scratch animation on 16 mm film stock.

Il trouve son inspiration dans les oeuvres de Norman McLaren,

Juanita Peters has worked for over 25 years in
the news and entertainment industry variously as a
newscaster, journalist and producer of documentaries
and television series. Juanita is also a seasoned actor
of stage, television and feature films. She wrote and
directed Hannah’s Story about Winnipeg native Hannah
Taylor, who founded the Ladybug Foundation to raise
awareness and support for the homeless. Juanita will
present the Manitoba premiere of Hannah’s Story, her
second production with the National Film Board, and
will host a story-boarding workshop during the Festival.
Juanita Peters travaille dans l’industrie des nouvelles et
du divertissement depuis 1981 quand elle était lectrice des
nouvelles pour le Annapolis Valley Radio Network. En 1989 elle
devient journaliste et annonciatrice à la télévision (CBC New
Brunswick). En 1999 elle démarra sa propre compagnie de
production réalisant et produisant plusieurs documentaires et
émissions de télévision. De plus Juanita Peters est une actrice
accomplie, ayant jouée au théâtre, à la télévision et au cinéma.
Hannah’s Story (disponible avec sous-titres en français) est son
deuxième réalisation avec L’Office national du film.

Pourquoi est-ce que je n’ai jamais entendu
parler de ces films?
Toute l’année, le personnel du Festival international de film pour
enfants de tous âges surveillent les films pour jeunes produits
partout au monde. Lors de notre festival nous sommes ravis de vous
présenter une occasion unique de visionner ces films sur grand écran
ici à Winnipeg, Canada. Des courts métrages et des longs métrages
réalisés dans divers langues qui vous proposent des perspectives
variées et des thèmes communs dans toutes les sociétés. Ce ne
sont pas des films que vous verrez au cinéma régulier ni que vous
trouverez au magasin de location vidéo.
Aiyiyi! Des sous-titres! Même en français!
Pas de problème. Nous présentons les films en version originale avec
sous-titres en anglais ou en français selon le cas. En ce qui concerne
les films sous-titrés destinés aux enfants de moins de 10 ans, nous
faisons faire la narration par des acteurs dans la salle de cinéma.
Notez que pour la première fois, le Festival va (enfin) proposer un
film en version originale, sous-titré en anglais avec narration en
français! Une vraie expérience internationale comme on en vit aux festivals
de films pour enfants à Montréal, Rimouski et en France.

WHERE DO I PAY?
Because it’s impossible to know how many people will want to
watch a film we strongly advise you buy your tickets in advance to
avoid being turned away at the door.
There are THREE ways to buy tickets in advance:
1.Go to your local Assiniboine Credit Union for tickets only, or to the 233-âllo information centre for French programs.
2.Go online to purchase tickets at freezeframeonline.org; Visa, MasterCard, American Express and PayPal are accepted.
3.Visit the Box Office where the film is playing. You MUST do this half an hour before the screening. Please note, the Freeze Frame Box Office at Cinematheque, The Garrick and The Globe cinemas accept CASH only.

We’ve got them! Workshops take place almost every day of the

Space is limited. We keep the workshops small so that everyone
can be involved. Last minute enrollment is possible but we strongly
recommend registering in advance. These workshops are delivered

great films for young audiences being produced all over the world.
Winnipeggers are then given a very special opportunity to watch a
selection at our festival. You’ll see award winning features and shorts
made in other languages with different perspectives and common
themes from countries across the globe. You won’t find these films at
your local multiplex or video rental store.

No problem. Freeze Frame provides live narration for subtitled
feature films for kids ten years and under. So just sit back. Relax.

Ali, Kouka, Omar and Boubker are a group of chemkaras or street
kids living in Casablanca. Their everyday lives are filled with
violence, begging, prostitution and neglect. The boys seek refuge
together sniffing glue as they daydream of sailing away to an
imaginary island with two suns and no problems. When Ali,
the leader, is senselessly killed by a rival gang the three grieving
survivors seek to give him the burial of a prince.

you…? Six-year-old Sarah discovers she can fly. But it proves to

mother takes her to the hospital. Amidst mad-scientist doctors and
other mayhem, Sarah befriends a very ill little boy, bequeathing
to him a toy airplane before she goes home. This film portrays the
imagination of a child coming to terms with her differences from
others, who in the process experiences profound joy and hope.

Hannah Taylor of Winnipeg is well recognized for her work to bring
awareness to the plight of the homeless and the hungry through
the establishment of the Ladybug Foundation. Under Hannah’s
leadership, the charity has raised over a million dollars for those
lacking life’s basic essentials. Filmmaker Juanita Peters will present
the Manitoban premiere of this engaging documentary that will
inspire young and old to examine their own contributions to those
in need. A two-hour workshop is being offered in conjunction with

bring a character to life and animate their facial expressions to create
