PRESS BOOK
Monday, March 19th, 2007
In 2003 we wrote with concern: “Films only represent 75% of the video publishing, it is
urgent to show films and to use festivals as a harbour for creativity and talent.”
This urgency remains.
Today, films represent only 52,6% of the video publishing. On TV, cinema feels guilty,
justifying its art, and seems to think it has to remind everyone that a film maker is
someone with a point of view.
Disturbing, isn’t it?
Intentionally, this year, we have programmed many more films than last year: 25% more,
that is 47 films in 5 days including 34 not yet released.
The small screen characterises itself by watching the finger pointing at the moon, the big
screen resists by watching the moon itself. In Deauville, we will succeed in supporting
Asia if we give a future to culture and desire, and a horizon for talent.

THREE DOCUMENTARIES ABOUT NORTH KOREA
The 9th edition of the Deauville Asian Film Festival will open itself to documentaries, proposing a
foray into the heart of the North Korean reality, through three documentaries about North Korea,
by the British director and producer Daniel Gordon:
THE GAMES OF THEIR LIVES (2002)
Soccer World Cup, 1966. To everyone’s surprise, the North Korean team beats Italy and is propelled into
the quarterfinal...
A STATE OF MIND (2004)
Two young North Korean girls prepare for the Mass Games, the biggest and most elaborate human
performance on earth.
CROSSING THE LINE (2006)
US soldier James Joseph Dresnok tells his story for the first time. In 1962, when the Cold War at its height,
he decided to change sides, deserting his post as a border guard in South Korea’s demilitarized zone and

Born November 27, 1947 in Paris, Jean-Pierre Dionnet was a salesman in a comic book shop and in flee
markets, before writing for PILOTE magazine. In the 70s, he founded the genre magazine METAL HURLANT
and the publishing house LES HUMANOIDES ASSOCIES, publishing comic books by Moëbius, Druillet,
Corben as well as novels: he became the first French publisher for Bukowski, as well as Hunter Thompson,
Selby and Eric Ambler. METAL HURLANT has been released in 17 countries and to this day its American
version still exists.
In 1980, on Antenne 2 (French TV), he helped create the programme “Les Enfants du rock” and received the
first “7 d’Or” ever awarded.
All through his life he continued to write comics, with artists such as Gal, Bilal, Margerin, Beb Deum, Denis
Sire, Pirus, etc.
Since the late 80s, he has hosted a weekly programme on Canal + “Cinéma de quartier”.
In the late 90s, he founded DES FILMS Company. First with STUDIO CANAL and the Asian Classics
collection, then with PATHE and the Asian Star collection, he was the first to introduce outside Asia
directors such as Kitano, Miyasaki, Johnnie To, Kim ki-duk, etc.
He recently put an end to his activities as a distributor in order to focus on production and is currently
developing several projects: MAX, adapted from a novel by Howard Fast, MR CLUBB & MR CUFF, adapted
from a short story by Peter Straub which will be directed by Kyle Cooper, DRAGON FIN’S SOUP which will be
directed by Takashi Miike.
Last but not least, he has founded a production company with Guillermo del Toro, which is currently
developing four animated films to be directed by Guillermo del Toro, Alex Proyas, Jan Kounen and Marc
Caro.

THE ASIAN VILLAGE
« An Asian village at the heart of cinema »
At the Deauville International Centre
From Wednesday 28th March to Sunday 1st April
Since 1999, the Asian Film Festival has opened the door to Asia to a wide audience. This year, the 9th
Festival will be held from Wednesday 28th March until Sunday 1st April. Thus, for 5 days, a refreshing
breeze loaded with the colours, perfumes, rumours and mystery of the Orient will waft around Deauville. A
high-quality programme, the presence of renowned and influential figures in Asian cinema, an astonishing
Asia Village, and geopolitical conferences with experts specialising in Asia, will afford an insight into the
whole panoply of Asian culture from a wide array of perspectives: cinema, globalisation, gastronomy,
sport, health and well-being, economy and training, arts and culture.
Having welcomed nearly 30,000 visitors in 2006 for its début, the Asia Village is taking on a new
dimension with over 3000m² dedicated to its four themes: “Arts and Culture”, “Asian Gastronomy”, “Health
and Well-being”, and “Economy and Training”, as well as numerous exhibitions, displays and
demonstrations. This village, access to which is free and unrestricted, and which is aimed at the general
public, confers continuity on the event while highlighting the different cultures of the countries
represented via original activities, some unexpected, and so make the exploration and discovery of the
exuberant variety of this extraordinary continent accessible to the widest possible audience.
This year, the Asia Village is welcoming over 60 exhibitors: art galleries, bookshops, the Malaysian tourist
office, puppets, massage stands etc., and headline displays - a Mongolian yurt, demonstrations by Team
Cascade, and even a special appearance by Miss Asia France 2006/2007.

PRESENTATION OF THE “ASIA VILLAGE”
The Deauville International Centre is preparing to fly the colours of Asia for the 9th Asian Film Festival,
2007.
The “Asia Village”, a space of over 3000m² is organised along four main themes: “Arts and Culture”, Asian
Gastronomy”, “Economy and Training”, and “Health and Well-being”.
The different cultures and the riches of Asia are represented via countries such as Japan, Malaysia,
Cambodia, Vietnam, Burma/Myanmar, China, India, South Korea, Indonesia, Nepal & Thailand.
Arts and culture
Our modern tradition has led us to refer to cinema as the “7th” or “Cinematographic Art”. The Asia Village
will present the other arts reflecting the differences of sensitivity and aestheticism that make up Asian
culture.
This area will emphasise the different artistic sensitivities to be found across Asia, between tradition and
modernity. Various exhibitions are planned: the Jayavarman VII Gallery and its Khmer works, the Hitomi
Bushi d’Eau Gallery and its contemporary Japanese paintings, or again China Creations 2007. Chinese
Shadows will allow you to discover Asian shadow and puppet theatre. France Orient Import will be
presenting traditional porcelain dolls, swords and clothing. Also on the program: Truffaut, its bonsais and
Japanese fish; René Dumas, with Oriental carpets from Asia Minor; Emporium with its Indonesian colonial,
Chinese, Oriental, contemporary or untreated teak furniture; G-Ka and its silk-based products and items;
and Eurachance and its exhibition of calligraphy and Chinese decoration.
Considerable emphasis is given to Asian literature, films and music: with Writers’ Teatime, the Junkudo
bookshop and its Japanese literature, Xiao Pan, the Chinese comic strip specialist, and J-Music
Distribution, the specialist in new Japanese musical trends.
Finally, you will discover other facets of Asia with the Malaysian Tourist Office.
Economy & Training
The economy and training area will host a space entirely given over to Asian students studying in
Normandy, whether they come from Caen, Rouen, or Le Havre. The students will thus have an opportunity
not only to meet each other, but also economic actors, training organizations, businesses, tourist
information centres etc. They will also come to present their training, talk about their expectations, and
explain why they chose to come to France.
29
Three hundred Asian students will be present at the festival. They will have the opportunity of discovering
the Asia Village, and will participate in intercultural Franco-Asian meetings. The PUN - Le Pôle Universitaire
Normand (Normandy Universities Centre) and the Centre d’Enseignement du Français pour Etrangers or
CEFE (Centre for Learning French as a Foreign Language) will present the different training courses tending
to promote Western/Asian exchange.
Catering “The Sushi Bar”
The whole Sushi Bar team is delighted to welcome you to the Deauville International Centre during the
Asian Film Festival and will be presenting dishes representative of different Asian countries: Japanese
sushi, miso soup, steamed ravioli, chicken curry and perfumed rice and also typical sweet dainties such as
dorayaki, sesame seed nougat, and the essential coconut pearls. The brothers Alex and Roland SIV, scions
of a big Asian catering family, created the Sushi Bar in 2000. With support from the judicious advice and
experience of Joëlle QUENTIN, former head of production for a major Parisian Asian caterer, they have
been offering an events organisation service, KAITEN, since January 2006. The restaurant and Asia Lounge
will be open throughout the Festival.
Health and WellWell-being
This space is divided into two areas:
- A “Zen attitude” area dedicated to relaxation, reflexology, massage and traditional Asian medicine.
- “Asian Sports”: the practise of martial arts has long been considered an excellent form of physical
activity, a source of good health, leading to genuine philosophical fulfilment. It is become increasingly
popular in France where there are now 580,000 members of judo clubs, 200,000 karate club members,
60,000 Aikido club members and 50,000 Tae Kwon Do practitioners, to name but a few. Over the four
days of the festival, parallel to screenings, martial arts clubs from the region will be laying on displays and
demonstrations.
Headline displays
A genuine Mongolian Yurt will be exposed, painted and decorated in traditional colours, fitted out inside
with nomads’ furniture; this tent will be open to visitors. In parallel, an exhibition will display precious
Mongolian items from the XVIIIth and XIXth Centuries: clothing and jewellery that once belonged to princes
and princesses, their portraits, authentic antique furniture etc. Furthermore, pictures, paintings and
Chinese ink drawings by contemporary Mongolian artists on the theme of the horse and nomadic life will
be put up for sale. Change of scenery guaranteed!
30
Don’t miss the initiation into the preparation of sushi of Saturday 31st March, by a master ‘sushi
sushi man’
man from
the sushi bar, who will reveal the mysterious techniques involved in the elaboration of this dish, symbolic
of Japanese cuisine. Demonstration followed by a free tasting for members of the public.
With PARK AVENUE, his Production Company, the Producer and Director Paul FEREL, a contemporary art
enthusiast, has agreed to a partnership with the CID within the context of the 9th Asian Film Festival. With
assistance from P.A.TARDITO, the reporter and cameramen with whom he has filmed around the world,
and who shares his artistic passion, Paul FEREL is organizing “CHINA CREATIONS 2007”. For the very first
time, some twenty major works will be exhibited at the CID. They bear the signatures of eight emerging
Chinese painters met in Beijing in 2006 and who illustrate with brio new trends in Chinese creativity.
Acrobatic demonstrations with the Team C.A.S.C.A.D.E., an artistic martial arts school created in 1997, by
Maurice CHAN and Jean-Jacques IBRAHIM, which has gone from strength to strength over the years and
has won international renown with titles won at the most prestigious competitions. Since 2000, a
demonstration team uniting discipline champions and professional stuntmen has come together for the
purpose of creating impressive displays combining action, stunts, martial arts, acrobatics and
aestheticism.
They have already participated in television programmes and have also contributed to
numerous films including Danny the Dog, Le Pacte des Loups (Brotherhood of the Wolf), Le Boulet etc…On
Sunday 1st April 2007, they will amaze you with their spectacular acrobatics backed by rhythmic music and
will permit you to discover a different facet of martial arts.
Sporting displays from the French Tae Kwon Do Team
Presence of Miss Asia France 2006/2007:
2006/2007 Veronica Tharmalingham, Miss Asia France 2006/2007, will
accompany Philippe Augier, the Mayor of Deauville, for the opening and closing ceremonies. This beautiful
Ambassador of Indian origin will meet and sign autographs for children on Thursday 29th March.
Her presence has been arranged by Eurasian Dream, an association created in November 2002, presided
by N.T.T. Jean-Paul Nguyen, whose main initiatives are deployed between Asia and Europe, in order to
promote closer links, meetings and exchange between the peoples of the continent, Asia and Europe.

China Club Launch
Wednesday 28th March at 12h00
Lower Normandy and the region’s entrepreneurs wish to tackle the Chinese market. The creation of the
China Club will be officially announced at the opening of the Deauville Asian Film Festival, on Wednesday
28th march 2007 at 12h00. This club is intended to bring together actors in industry and tourism,
logisticians, researchers etc. - all the sectors of activity affected by the development of China, whose
market is now the biggest in the world. In fact, with a Chinese population of nearly 1.3 billion, of whom
barely 10% have attained a standard of living equal to or higher than the standard of living in France, China
is a country in the early stages of its growth, with thousands of opportunities to be developed.
The China Club aims to help regional businesses to become established in the country, and to create a
pool of experience in order to facilitate the growth of exchange. This took form following an official trip
last September to the Fujian province, mid-way between Shanghai and Canton, and twinned with Lower
Normandy since 1995. The delegation, composed of business leaders and politicians, became aware of the
potential of this dynamic coastal region, open to the outside world, and of the interest for products from
Lower Normandy. All the savoir-faire available in Normandy - agriculture and food production,
manufacturing of lorries, cables and other types of equipment - are of interest to the Chinese.
Meetings between members, conference cycles with experts and cultural activities have been organised
since the month of November. Working groups aimed at reflecting on economic issues are also on the
agenda.

Conferences
“The challenges Asia represents
represents for Europe and France”
Conferences – The challenges Asia represents for Europe and France
Wednesday 28th March: 14h-19h at the Deauville International Centre
Open to the public (subject to available seating)
The Ouest France Group and the Deauville International Centre are inviting some of the people best
informed on the subject of Asia to the opening of the Deauville Asian Film Festival.
The emergence of Asia at the heart of contemporary issues is one of the major globally significant events
of the 21st Century. Japanese and South Korean economic sovereignty are finding an echo in the industrial,
financial and political might of China, which has become the 4th ranking world power. India is being
confirmed as a highly efficient actor on the capitalist scene. The great French sinologist, Jean-Luc
Domenach, declares that Asia “has now established a real limit to the West’s domination”. Should we be
happy with this development or be wary of it? Shut ourselves off, consider it as a threat, or compromise?
Participants: Jean-Luc Domenech, the great French sinologist, back from Beijing, where he has just created
the French Cultural Institute, alongside Professor François Godement, the Director of the Asia Centre;
Sophie Boisseau du Rocher, specialist in South-East Asia; the socialist politician Jacques Auxiette; the
writers Anne Garrigue and Michel Testard; the publisher Geneviève Imbot-Bichet; the Executive Director of
the Tata group Alan Rosling and businessman Hugues Witvoet; the media personality Rozenn Milin, and
also Bruno Barde, the Managing Director of The Public Système Cinéma and Director of Festival and
another political speaker whose presence is to be confirmed.

COGNAC MARTELL
Martell, the reference
Martell is a prestigious name in the world of Cognac, being one of the most important Cognac brands and
one of only 4 brands that have a worldwide reputation (very strong in the UK, Asian and duty-free
markets).
In France, it is the most renowned Cognac.
Martell blends eaux-de-vie from the 4 main «appellations» of the Cognac region to become Fine Cognac
after having been aged in oak casks.
Jean Martell, an Englishman originally from St Brelade, on the island of Jersey, founded Martell in 1715. He
came to Cognac to sell the locally produced brandy, the quality of which he had immediately recognised.
He died in 1753, leaving his business to his wife and two sons.
Since 1715, Martell has carefully preserved the authenticity of the Cognacs it produces. The experience
and skill with which the company’s cellar masters select and blend different brandies ensures the richness
and character of Martell’s Cognacs.

present the Festival to its readers. For the Festival preview, it is also organising the conferences, with
recognised specialists in attendance, concerning the challenges Asia represents for Europe and France.
Ouest France will be inviting over 600 readers from all over western France for the occasion.
FRANCE BLEU BASSE and HAUTEHAUTE-NORMANDIE

ARTE made in Asia
For several years now, ARTE has been pursuing an original policy of practical action, thus displaying its
desire to play an active role off-air in the dissemination of works and ideas. Its Cultural Development
Delegation organises public events and participates in many festivals all along the year.
As a partner of the Deauville Asian Film Festival ARTE is particularly interested in supporting international
cinema. The channel has been working with renowned Asian directors for many years, such as Wong Kar
Waï, Rithy Panh, Dai Sijie, Tsai Ming-Liang, Wang Chao, Hong Sang-soo.
This year, L’Express is happy to support the Deauville Asian Film Festival.
Among the flood of instant news, L’Express selects the essentials and what will turn out to be important in
order to go into detail and analyse it.
Playing a role in the modernisation of society since it was created, L’Express commits itself when its values
are in danger. Concerned by the three environments of its readers, public, professional and personal,
L’Express does also speak to the reader as a questioning and epicurean consumer.
Trends, arts, entertainment, literature, painting, music and cinema: every week, a selection and an original
vision.
Because our mission is to lead our readers towards the most relevant events.
Because we like to share our favourite happenings.
Read L’Express every Thursday.
And every day on www.lexpress.fr : real-time news analysed by our editors.
All year long, Libération associates itself with events of all sorts in the fields of culture and knowledge.
These partnerships continue the selection of our editors, their discoveries, their favourites, their
commitments, and shows Libération’s
Libération support for established ideas as well as the most innovative ones.
Libération is therefore happy to be a partner of the Deauville Asian Film Festival.
