Der Schweizer Trompeter und Komponist Manuel Mengis
führt mit seiner «Gruppe 6» vor, wie Jazz heute gespielt werden
kann. Die Musiker sind nicht einfach virtuose Improvisatoren,
die man im richtigen Augenblick von der Leine lässt, sondern
Charakterdarsteller einer Geschichte, die jedes Mal neu erzählt
wird. Es ist ein Jazz, der auch ein Rockpublikum erfreut:
wuchtig, mit pulsierenden Rhythmen, und doch geprägt von
Melodien und Motiven, die vielfach variiert und verwandelt,
vergessen und wieder geahnt werden, manchmal über mehrere
Stücke hinweg.

Poetische. Das Klischee gesellt sich ganz ungeniert neben
das Anarchische. Auch stilistisch lässt sich der Walliser
Komponist nicht festlegen. Plötzlich glaubt man Surfklänge
und Doom-Metal heraus zu hören. der Beat wird nicht einfach
durchgepaukt, das Metrum dehnt sich und beschleunigt sich,
manchmal kommt es – wie das Leben selbst – fast zum Stillstand.

halten. Mit Lionel Friedli (Drums), Marcel Stalder (e-Bass),
Flo Stoffner (Gitarre), Roland von Flüe (Tenor Saxofon, Bass
Klarinette) und Adrian Pflugshaupt (Alt Saxofon, Klarinette) hat
Mengis ein Team zusammen gebracht, das seine Ideen mit
unbändiger Spielfreude und immenser Schlagkraft umzusetzen
