Grand-mère au jardin / Granny in the Garden :)
After dinner, alas, I soon had to leave Mother / mama (behind) to
(go on) chat(ting) with the others, in the garden if the weather was
fine, in the morning room where everyone would go in case of bad
weather. Everyone except my grandmother, who thought it a pity to

stay penned up inside (out) in the country, and who on very rainy
days / when it rained too hard had interminable discussions with my
father because he sent me (off) to read in my room instead of
staying outside. “You won’t make him (grow up) sturdy and lively /
big and strong like that / That's no way to make him… ”, she said

sadly/gloomily, “especially that youngster/little fellow that needs to
build up his strength and willpower so much.” My father would shrug
his shoulders and look /peer at the barometer, as he liked
meteorology, while my mother, without making any noise so as not
to bother/interrupt him, would gaze at him with tender respect, but

not too hard, so as not to try to penetrate the mystery of his

furniture lest it get wet, my grandmother could always be seen / was
always out there in the empty, rain-whipped garden, pushing aside
her disheveled gray locks to let her forehead soak up the
wholesome wind and rain even better.
