In this month reading, the narrator describes the dinner parties at the Guermantes house. The narrator realizes that the
society he fantasized about is not what he thought it was.
“In the period that followed I was continually to be invited,
were it with a small party only, to these repasts at which I
had at one time imagined the guests as seated like the Apostles in the
Sainte-Chapelle. They did assemble there indeed, like the early Christians, not to partake merely of a material nourishment, which incidentally
was exquisite, but in a sort of social Eucharist”

Venus in fur
Children & families welcome!
The latest movie from master filmmaker Roman Polanski. Alone in
a Paris theater after a long day of auditioning actresses for his
new play, writer-director Thomas (Mathieu Amharic) complains
that no actress he's seen has what it takes to play the lead female
character: a woman who enters into an agreement with her male
counterpart to dominate him as her slave. Thomas is about to
leave the theater when actress Vanda (Emmanuelle Seigner)
bursts in, a whirlwind of erratic - and, it turns out, erotic - energy

The Chambermaid on the Titanic
En 1912 Horty remporte la course annuelle
qu’organise le patron de sa fonderie. Il gagne un
voyage à Southampton pour voir appareiller le
“Titanic”.

Jeanine Parisier Plottel, PhD (Columbia
University) is a professor emeritus of
French, CUNY Hunter College and the
Chair of the Executive Committee of the
Maison Française at Columbia. The
French government has decorated her
twice for her contribution to French language, literature and culture.
