Eleanor Penfold is a recent Music graduate from Durham University, currently studying under Sarah Pring,
Guildhall. This year she has performed as Soprano Soloist for Stoneleigh Choral Society in Schubert Mass in
G and is preparing for later solo recitals in the autumn. She is also a soprano within the newly
established consort, Templar Scholars, who may the their London debut at St Martin-in-the-Fields this July at The
Sixteen's Sounds Sublime festival. Whilst at Durham she was involved in a number of productions with the
Durham Operatic Ensemble along with various solo recitals and recordings. As well as singing for the chapel
choirs of University College, St Hild & St Bede and Hatfield among others, she also held a Soprano scholarship at
St Chad's College; with whom she toured to Rome and New York. She continues to sing for various choirs in and
around London; currently holding a choral scholarship at St Mary the Virgin, Ewell. Eleanor has sung across the
UK with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, including Proms under the direction of Vasily Petrenko,
Gustavo Dudamel and Daniel Barenboim. She has competed nationally in both choral and solo festivals and took
part in the international competition Venezia in Musica with the Northern Spirit Singers and BBC Choir of the
Year.
In solo performance she has been awarded the Angus Watson Cup and John Taylor Memorial Cup for Opera and
Oratorio at the Ryton Festival Championships in 2012. She has also been awarded a diploma in performance with
distinction at Trinity College London. She recently gained First place for Oratorio and British Song at The North
London Music Festival as well as the overall prize for Opera and Oratorio. In the 2014 Croydon Music Festival,
she was also awarded the John Wiltshire Memorial Shield for Oratorio, the Sidney and Elizabeth Northcote
Memorial Trophy for British Song and First place for Lieder.
'Love and Loss'
This recital will explore the themes of Love and Loss in songs by composers including Mozart, Walton and many
more. From the tenderness of love in a piece by Strauss 'Ich trage meine Minne' to the anguish and defiance
of someone who faces loosing their love, before their death, in Mozart's concert aria 'Bella mia fiamma addio'. The
programme will also feature the curious tales of Walton's mystical love song 'Daphne' and Britten's surrealist
portrait of modern life 'Villes'.
There has been a slight amendment to the programme, which hopes to make for a more cohesive selection of
songs.
With the addition of Le Colibri, the first half will end with Chausson's romantic journey and celebration of
love. In the second half, in place of Verdi's Saper vorreste will be another piece by Britten from his opera
Midsummer Night's Dream; appropriately coupling the preceding piece Villes, with Queen's Titania's infatuated
love song to Bottom.

Le Colibri
Le vert colibri, le roi des collines,
Voyant la rosée et le soleil clair,
Luire dans son nid tissé d'herbes fines,
Comme un frais rayon s'échappe dans l'air.
Il se hâte et vole aux sources voisines,
Où les bambous font le bruit de la mer,
Où l'açoka rouge aux odeurs divines
S'ouvre et porte au coeur un humide éclair.
Vers la fleur dorée, il descend, se pose,

Villes
Ce sont des villes! C'est un peuple pour qui se sont montés
ces Alleghanys et ces Libans de rêve!
Des chalets de cristal et de bois se meuvent sur des rails et
des poulies invisibles. Les vieux cratères ceints de colosses
et de palmiers de cuivre rugissent mélodieusement dans les feux.
Des cortèges de Mabs en robes rousses, opalines, montent des ravines.
Là-haut, les pieds dans la cascade et les ronces, les cerfs tettent Diane.
Les Bacchantes des banlieues sanglotent et la lune brûle et hurle.
Vénus entre dans les cavernes des forgerons et des ermites.
Des groupes de beffrois chantent les idées des peuples.
Des châteaux bâtis en os sort la musique inconnue.
Le paradis des orages s'effondre.
Les sauvages dansent sans cesse la Fête de la Nuit.
Quels bons bras, quelle belle heure me rendront cette région

Castles of crystal and wood move on rails and invisible pulleys.
Old craters, encircled with colossal statues and palms of copper,
roar melodiously in their fires...
Corteges of Queen Mabs in robes red and opaline, climb the ravine.
Up there, their hoofs in the cascades and the briars, the stags give Diana suck.
Bacchantes of the suburbs weep, and the moon burns and howls.
Venus enters the caves of the blacksmiths and hermits.
Groups of bell-towers sing aloud the ideas of the people.
From castles built of bones proceeds unknown music...
The paradise of the thunders bursts and falls.
Savages dance unceasingly the Festival of the Night.
What kindly arms, what good hour will restore to me those regions
from which come my slumbers and the least of my movements?
