U N P ETI T M OT .. .
En débutant ce mois le plus court de
l’année, je constate qu’il est déjà rempli
d’activités. Nous venons tout juste de
terminer une vidéoconférence avec l’école
de New York et nous continuons celles
avec la France. J’espère que vous avez eu
la chance de voir l’article dans le journal
local du 4 février pour un article à ce sujet.
Si vous l’avez manqué, il est en annexe à
cette lettre. Je voudrais faire une
parenthèse à ce point pour remercier M.
Philip pour tout le travail qu’il fait au
niveau de la technologie à l’école. C’est
grâce à lui que ces deux évènements de
partage technologique peuvent avoir lieu.
Merci pour le travail excellent!
Au secondaire, ils sortent de la ville à
deux reprises ce mois.
Une
fois
pour le ski à Kananaskis et une autre
pour le hockey balle à Calgary. Au
primaire, ils vont patiner au Kinplex vers
la mi-février. Pour ceux qui aiment
planifier à l’avance, nous avons aussi une
date pour le ski au primaire (3e à 6e
année) à Hidden Valley le 20 mars. S’il
nous reste de la neige, cela devrait être une
activité amusante.
Académiquement, les élèves du secondaire ont
survécu à leurs examens et sont prêts, je
l’espère, pour la deuxième partie de l’année.

Newsletter
A F E W WORDS . . .
As we start this short month, I notice it is
already filled with activities. We have just
had our videoconference with a school in
New York and we are continuing those
scheduled with France. If you missed the
article in the local newspaper last
Wednesday with regards to this, we
attached a copy at the back of this
newsletter. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank M. Philip for all the
work he has done with respect to
technology at our school. Thanks to
him, these two technological events can
occur. Thank you for the excellent work!
At the High School level, the students
will be heading out of town twice this
month.
The first is a ski trip in
Kananaskis and the second is for ball
hockey in Calgary. As for the elementary
level, they will go skating at the Kinplex
in the middle of the month. If you want
to plan ahead, we have a date for the ski
trip for the elementary students. It will
be March 20th for the grade 3 to 6
students. If we still have snow, it should
be a fun activity!
Academically, the High School students have
survived their exams and are ready, I hope, for
the next part of the year. Report cards will be
mailed out soon.

La sécurité de vos enfants nous impose
de limiter la circulation dans l’école.
Vous recevrez une carte de visiteur qui
indiquera au personnel que votre
présence a été signalée.

Le personnel est très disponible à
rencontrer les parents, il suffit
simplement de faire un rendez-vous.
•
Si vous venez chercher votre enfant
à l’arrêt d’autobus, veuillez vous assurer
qu’un des surveillants a noté son départ
avec vous. Il serait idéale de vous voir
en personne.

Nous sommes en pleines
activités du deuxième terme de l’année
2009 et les élèves se montrent très
impliqués. Au fur et à mesure que nous
avançons, les élèves de 5e et 6e année
voient leurs intérêts grandir à travers
différents projets. Ainsi, les deux projets
de vidéoconférence initiés par le corps
professoral et soutenu par la direction

innovation pour l’école les Cyprès sous
la férule de sa Directrice que de voir les
jeunes communiquer avec les autres
enfants du monde en nous donnant le
privilège de notre position de bilingue.
Ainsi, la didactique des langues et la
technologique font bon chemin au
grand bénéfice des nos élèves. Notre
premier contact a été établi le jeudi 22
janvie r dernie r avec l’ École de
Génicourt ,une petite ville sympathique
du Louvre, en France, à l’image de
Medecine Hat.
L’enseignant Jean Bernard y voit un
grand intérêt d’établir cet échange entre
les deux groupes d’élèves. Nous aussi
d’ailleurs, puisque la communication
orale et l’écriture y sont associées afin
de créer une interaction.
Nous avions une autre Vidéo conférence
avec l’école Sloatsburg Elementary
School non loin de New-York, mardi
passé le 3 février 2009. Les élèves
l’attendait avec intérêt.
En science, les expériences se
poursuivent et suscitent un engouement
certain de nos élèves. En ce moment,
nous travaillons sur les solides, liquides
etc.
Dans le cadre de la francisation, toute
une équipe a été mobilisée par la
direction afin de donner et de renforcer
les capacités langagières de nos élèves
par un cou rs personnalisé. En
attendant de vous tenir au courant des
évènements futurs, sachez que nous
restons di sponibles pour tou tes
questions relatives à la vie de l’école
pour une meilleure réussite de nos
enfants.

This second term of the year is
full of activities and the students are
very involved. As we progress, the
grade 5 and 6 students’ interests are
showing through various projects. As
such, the two videoconference projects
initiated by the teaching staff and
supported by the administration are
looking to be great successes. It is a true
innovation for our school under the
guidance of our Principal to see the
young people communicate with others
in the world.
We can thus take
advantage of our bilingualism. The
teaching of technology and language are
thus paired to the benefit of our
students. Our first contact was made
last Thursday, January 22nd with École
de Génicourt, a small town in Louvre,
France which in some ways resembles
Medicine Hat.
Jean Bernard, the teacher there, sees the

exchange between our two groups of
students. We do as well, since verbal
and wri tten commun icati on are
necessary for interaction.
We have had another videoconference
with Sloatsburg Elementary School, not
far from New York city on February
3rd. The students were looking forward
to it with great interest. In science, the
experiments are continuing and are
producing a real enthusiasm in our
students. Presently, we are working on
solids and liquids.
Within the framework of francisation a
whole team has been mobilised by the
administration in order to provide and
reinforce the French abilities of our
students by a more one on one
approach . Until next time, please

Le jour de la Saint –Valentin
Le jour de la Saint-Valentin est considéré
dans de nombreux pays comme la fête des
amoureux et de l’amitié. La coutume de
s’écrire des gentils mots et de se donner des
cadeaux est très ancienne. C’est à la
Saint-Valentin que les Nord-Américains
s’échangent le plus de cartes de vœux, à
l’exception de Noël. Quelques faits
intéressants :
♥ Presque 1 milliard de cartes de
vœux seront échangées pour la
Saint-Valentin
♥ Seulement les États-Unis, le
Royaum Uni, le Canada, le
EN MATERNELLE
Eh! Oui, le mois de janvier fait déjà partie
du passé. Ce premier mois de l’année 2009
s’est traduit par un retour de vacances très
énergique de la part des enfants. Et quels
magnifiques souvenirs de Noël racontés par
ces derniers! En plus, les enfants ont
continué de faire de beaux efforts pour
toujours parler en français. D’autre part,
pour les enfants, ce qui différencie le mois
de janvier de tous les autres mois passés à
l’école, c’est la rencontre avec notre amie
Cochonnette. Qui est Cochonnette ? Si votre
enfant ne vous en a pas déjà parlé !
Mexique, la France et l’Australie
fêtent la Saint-Valentin.
♥ Environ 3% de maitres d’animaux
donneront une carte de vœux à leur
animal préféré.
♥ La première carte de vœux de la
Saint-Valentin a été donnée de la
part de Charles, Duke of Orléans, à
sa femme en 1415 durant son
emprisonnement dans la tour de
Londres.
♥ 36 millions de boîtes de chocolat en
forme de cœur seront vendues en
Cochonnette est un toutou, un cochon, qui
vient de la province de Québec.
Cochonnette est née en Beauce, ville située
près de la belle ville de Québec. Ce toutou
fait parti d’un projet qu’une classe de 6e
année a démarré. Le projet a pour but que
Cochonnette parcourt les dix provinces du
Canada. En visitant, les différentes
provinces, Cochonnette s’arrête dans les
écoles pour rencontrer les élèves de
maternelle, 1e et 2e année. Par ailleurs, les
élèves de la classe de 6e année qui dirigent
ce projet suggèrent que chaque classe qui
reçoit Cochonnette réalise un cadeau
spécial pour elle. Ensuite, une fois que le
projet réalisé par les élèves est terminé,
Cochonnette regagne sa boîte en emportant
Amérique du nord pour la SaintValentin.

avec elle un autre souvenir. Donc,
notre classe de maternelle a décidé,
afin d’éviter que Cochonnette se sente
trop seule pendant son voyage vers les
autres provinces, de lui fabriquer des
amis. Ainsi, deux amis sont nés pour
accompagner Cochonnette. De plus,
les élèves ont eu la chance d’écrire un
message à Cochonnette pour lui dire
pourquoi ils l’aiment. Les enfants ont
adoré connaître Cochonnette, faire la
détente avec elle, lui montrer ce qu’ils
font dans une journée, faire la causerie
avec elle...ils ne veulent pas qu’elle
parte ! Ce fut un beau projet à réaliser
avec vos enfants ! Voici quelques

Valentine’s Day
♥ Valentine’s Day is considered in
numerous countries to be a day of love
and friendship. The tradition of writing
words of love and gift- giving has been
around since ancient times. With the
exception of Christmas, it is during
Valentine’s Day that North-Americans
will exchange the most number of
greeting cards. Here are some
interesting facts:
♥ Nearly 1 billion greeting cards will be
exchanged for Valentine’s day.
♥ Only the United States, the UK,

This first month of the 2009 year has proven
to be an energetic return from vacation for
the students. What wonderful Christmas
stories they shared with us! Also, students
have continued to make great efforts to
always speak French. Also, for the children,
what sets January apart from other months
is meeting our friend Cochonnette. Who is
Cochonnette? If your child hasn’t already
told you, Cochonnette is a stuffed animal, a
pig, from Québec. Cochonnette was born in
Beauce, a city in close proximity to Québec

During the visit, Cochonnette stops in
schools to meet with kindergarten, grade 1
and 2 students. In addition, the grade 6
students who started the project suggest
that each class that receives Cochonnette
create a special gift for her. Once the gift is
assembled, Cochonnette gets back into her
box taking with her another souvenir.
Therefore, our class has decided to make
her two traveling companions so that she is
not so alone in her journey. Also, students
had a chance to write a message to
Cochonnette to express why they liked her.
The children loved getting to know

Hat students talk to Big Apple

Students at École les Cyprès got the chance to see and talk to kids in New York on Tuesday — and they didn’t
have to leave their desks to do it.
Thanks to the power of videoconferencing technology, the Grade 5/6 class at Medicine Hat’s francophone school
was linked with a fifth grade class in New York. As the students watched, the video screen before them came to
life and the New York kids sang them a song in real time called “Bonjour, Mon Ami.”
“It’s cool,” said Grade 6 École les Cyprès student Rebecca Oulette. “I think it’s cool how you can get from here
all the way to there like that.”
During the half-hour videoconference, the Canadian and American students introduced themselves to each other
and then took turns giving a short presentation. The francophone students told their New York friends all about
Medicine Hat in English, while the New York students practiced their basic French by telling the Medicine Hat
kids facts about themselves.
The videoconference was the result of grant money the Conseil Scolaire du Sud de l’Alberta (the francophone
school division École les Cyprès belongs to) received for the purpose of “techno-projects.”
After purchasing the technology, École les Cyprès teacher and project co-ordinator Philip Gaudet was able to
connect with the school in New York through a website that links classes interested in talking with other students
through the technology.
Gaudet says École les Cyprès is also partnered with a school in France, whose students are looking to practice
their English. Once a week, the Medicine Hat students chat to their friends in France through e-mail or videoconference. It’s like pen pals, only high-tech.
Gaudet is enthusiastic about the benefits of the technology and the opportunities it opens up.
“It’s international interaction,” Gaudet says. “It’s exchanging culture, different mindsets, different ways of working.”
Gaudet says having the chance to speak directly to kids in a different country will give his students a much better
taste for different cultures than they would have if they simply read about it. He adds it’s also more fun.
“The motivation of my students is much higher now,” he says.
École les Cyprès students will be sending the poster they made about Medicine Hat to their New York friends,
something Gaudet says adds another element of fun to the program.
“It will be nice to have a Medicine Hat poster, written in French, in a classroom in New York,” he says.
